There is no confirmed universal rule to upgrade talismans before other gear—or the reverse—in Minecraft Dungeons II. Talismans provide passive bonuses, while the official systems overview specifically describes upgrades for enchantments applied to gear slots. Check what your current build lacks and compare the real options and costs shown in your game; prioritize the choice that addresses your most immediate weakness. That is a practical decision method, not a developer-prescribed ranking.
What talismans do—and what “upgrade” means here
Minecraft describes talismans as a new equipment category that provides “passive bonuses and additional build customization.” Mojang Design Director Laura de Llorens likewise called them “passive boosts” in an Xbox Wire podcast. In practice, a talisman’s value depends on how its bonus fits your build; the official description does not rank talismans against weapons, armor, or other equipment.
Be precise about the upgrade mechanic: the systems overview explains that enchantment books add effects to a personal library, and the local Enchantsmith can apply those effects to a gear slot. It says enchantments can be upgraded over time. It does not establish that talisman items themselves can be upgraded, nor does it publish a talisman-versus-gear cost or return comparison. An enchantment upgrade is not proof that the item carrying it—or a talisman—can be upgraded in the same way.
How to choose what to upgrade first
Use the options and costs currently shown in your game rather than assuming a fixed priority. Compare each available choice against the weakness you most need to solve.

- Identify the immediate problem. If you are struggling to stay alive, look for an available effect that helps with that problem. If your build is not dealing with enemies effectively, focus on an option that supports your damage or combat approach. These are decision examples, not claims about specific unverified item effects.
- Check build fit. Consider whether the talisman’s passive bonus or the gear-slot enchantment supports the way you actually play. A strong-sounding effect is less useful if it does not serve your build.
- Look for combinations. Consider how a choice works alongside your other equipment and effects. A combination may be more useful than judging one item in isolation.
- Compare the actual opportunity cost. Check the available upgrade screen and weigh the displayed costs against what you would give up by spending those resources elsewhere. The official materials do not publish a universal cost comparison.
- Choose for the current version and reassess. Make the choice that addresses the clearest current need, then review your build when your gear or available options change.
What the reported demo example can—and cannot—tell you
In a June 10, 2026 Xbox Wire hands-on report, the demo had three talisman slots. The report described a bone talisman that summoned a dog companion, which attacked enemies and drew their attention. It also showed the talisman alongside an enchantment that could create regeneration spots when enemies were killed.
This illustrates why combinations can matter: a passive talisman effect and a gear enchantment may contribute to a broader build. It is a demo example, not a complete talisman list, a universal recommendation, or confirmation that the item works identically in the released game.

Why there is no reliable fixed ranking
The official systems overview describes a broader equipment system: combat slots expand from six to twelve, with armor divided among a helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots. Items can have random effects, and enchantments can be applied to a gear slot and upgraded over time. But the official materials do not give a complete comparison of talisman upgradeability, upgrade costs, or performance returns across talismans, weapons, armor, and other gear. A blanket “talisman first” or “gear first” claim would go beyond what those materials establish.

Minecraft announced September 29, 2026 as the release date. The official launch page lists Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The systems discussed above are specific to Minecraft Dungeons II; they should not be inferred from the original Minecraft Dungeons.
