Yes. Talking to a villager raises friendship once per in-game day. A normal conversation gives 20 friendship points; speaking while the villager is in a special animation, such as exercising or taking a picture, gives 10 points. Because one heart equals 250 points, an ordinary greeting is 8% of one heart, not a whole heart. The interaction is still worth doing because friendship can decline on days you do not greet someone.
The figures and exceptions below are documented on the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Friendship page, with the general interaction described on its Getting Started page.

How many friendship points does talking give?
Friendship is stored as a point total and displayed to you as hearts. Every heart represents 250 points. The daily conversation award is tied to the villager, not to each line of dialogue: once you have received that day’s greeting award, continuing the conversation does not create additional daily awards.
| Conversation situation | Friendship points | How often it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary conversation | +20 | Once per villager per day |
| Villager in a special animation, such as exercising or using a camera | +10 | Once for that villager on that day |
| Conversation during a festival | +20 | Once per villager during that festival day |
A normal greeting therefore supplies 20 ÷ 250 = 0.08 heart, or 8% of a heart. The special-animation award supplies 10 ÷ 250 = 0.04 heart, or 4%. The heart display may not visibly change after one conversation because the game is tracking points behind the meter; several interactions, gifts, and events accumulate toward the next full heart.

Why the special-animation amount is lower
The Friendship page distinguishes a regular conversation from a greeting made while a villager is performing a special animation. Examples include exercise and taking a picture. The game still records the interaction, but the documented award is 10 points rather than 20. If your goal is to maximize points, a normal greeting is more valuable, although greeting someone in an animation is still positive and prevents you from missing that day’s opportunity.
Do multiple dialogue boxes count multiple times?
No. A conversation can contain several dialogue boxes, but the documented mechanic is one daily conversation award for that villager. Clicking through a longer exchange does not turn every line into another 20-point payment. Once you have spoken to that villager that day, further dialogue is useful for seeing their text, not for repeatedly farming friendship points.
When does the daily greeting count?
The practical rule is simple: speak to each villager no more than once per day for the daily conversation award. If you pass someone while handling another task, a quick greeting is enough to register the interaction. You do not need to find a special dialogue option or carry an item.

Festival days
Conversations at festivals count. The Festivals page specifies that speaking to villagers during a festival awards friendship as it would on an ordinary day: +20 for a normal conversation. Festival activities can also change friendship separately, so the greeting and the activity should be treated as different mechanics.
This makes festivals useful for villagers who are difficult to reach during their normal schedules. You can greet them in the festival area and receive the conversation award even though the day’s map access and routines are different. A festival conversation does not replace other festival effects, such as a dance or a meal decision.
The telephone is not a substitute
Calling a villager by telephone does not count as the daily talking interaction. If you call instead of speaking to the villager in person, you have not collected the conversation award. Use the telephone for its own information and dialogue purposes, then meet the villager directly when you want the friendship interaction to register.

What happens when you skip a day?
Missing a greeting can reduce friendship. The amount depends on the villager’s relationship category and, for romance candidates, whether you have given a bouquet. The documented daily decay values are:
| Relationship status | Decay when the daily greeting is missed | Additional behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Non-romanceable villager | −2 points per day | Decay stops at the heart thresholds listed by the Friendship page. |
| Romance candidate before a bouquet | −2 points per day | Decay stops at the listed heart thresholds. |
| Romance candidate after a bouquet | −10 points per day | Decay stops at the listed heart thresholds. |
| Spouse | −20 points per day | Decay continues even at the top of the spouse meter. |
The threshold rule matters when you are deciding whom to prioritize. Ordinary villagers and pre-bouquet romance candidates do not fall indefinitely if you stop interacting after reaching one of the documented stopping points. Giving a bouquet changes the romance relationship’s decay rate, so a candidate who was easy to maintain before dating requires more regular attention afterward. Marriage changes it again: a spouse continues to lose friendship when days are missed, including when the meter is full.
Spouse gains and losses are modified
The Friendship page also notes special spouse handling: all friendship gains and losses for a spouse are reduced by 34%. The listed spouse decay is still −20 per missed day, while the 34% reduction applies to the spouse’s friendship changes generally. This is why a spouse’s meter should be managed separately from the ordinary villager routine rather than assuming every gift or conversation has the same effect as before marriage.

Other ways to increase friendship
Talking is reliable because it needs no item and can be done daily, but it is only one part of the friendship system. The documented alternatives below can be combined with conversations.
| Friendship action | Documented effect or condition | Timing or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Item-delivery quest | +150 friendship points | Applies when the requested delivery is completed. |
| Gift | Loved and liked gifts increase friendship; the amount depends on the recipient’s reaction to the item. | The normal gift schedule includes a two-gift weekly limit. |
| Movie-theater visit | Inviting a villager to a movie can affect friendship. | Snacks purchased for the outing can affect the result as well. |
| Heart-event choice | Some choices during heart events change friendship. | The effect is tied to the event decision. |
| Flower Dance | +250 points with your dance partner | Applies to the dance-partner interaction at that festival. |
| Luau soup | The soup contribution and outcome can affect friendship with villagers. | It is a festival-specific effect, separate from talking. |
The +150 delivery-quest reward is much larger than one ordinary greeting, while the Flower Dance’s +250 equals one full heart. Gifts do not have one universal point value in the documented mechanics because the recipient’s response matters; a loved or liked item is the relevant category rather than a fixed number that applies to every gift.
Why combining methods works better
A daily greeting supplies a small, repeatable increase. A favorable gift, a completed delivery, or a successful festival event can add a larger jump. Using both approaches reduces the time needed to reach a new heart while still protecting the relationship on days when you cannot arrange a gift or quest.

A practical friendship routine
- Greet villagers as you encounter them. Make the in-person conversation the default whenever a villager is on your route. One greeting is enough for that villager’s daily award.
- Notice the villager’s animation. If the villager is exercising, taking a picture, or performing another documented special animation, the interaction is worth 10 points rather than 20. You can still speak to them, but do not expect the normal amount.
- Use festival access. On a festival day, speak to villagers in the festival area. Their conversations award friendship normally, so hard-to-reach villagers can still receive their daily greeting.
- Add the highest-value opportunities. Complete item-delivery quests when available, give gifts that the recipient likes or loves within the two-gift weekly schedule, and use movie outings, snacks, and heart-event choices when those options arise.
- Handle festival bonuses separately. A conversation at the Flower Dance is one interaction; dancing with a partner is a separate +250-point effect. Likewise, the Luau soup result is separate from simply talking to people there.
- Adjust after a bouquet or marriage. Before a bouquet, a romance candidate has the lower −2-per-day decay listed for that category. After a bouquet, missed days cost −10, and after marriage the spouse category uses −20 per day with continuing decay at the top of the meter.
Example: estimating progress toward a heart
Suppose you begin a day 30 points short of the next heart and have a normal conversation. The +20 greeting leaves you 10 points short; the meter will not necessarily show a new heart yet. A later +150 delivery quest would exceed the remaining amount, while a special-animation greeting alone would add only 10. The point system explains why a player can talk every day and still need gifts or events to reach a heart quickly.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Expecting one conversation to fill a heart
A heart is 250 points, so even the normal +20 award is a gradual contribution. Treat conversation as maintenance and steady progress, not as a replacement for larger friendship actions.
Calling instead of visiting
The telephone does not satisfy the greeting mechanic. If the daily award matters, speak to the villager in person at home, outside, or at a festival.

Festival conversations count as ordinary conversations, but dancing, soup outcomes, and other festival effects are separate entries in the friendship system. A greeting does not automatically grant the Flower Dance bonus, and attending a festival does not mean every activity has the same point value.
Ignoring relationship status
The missed-day penalty is not uniform. A non-romanceable villager and a spouse have very different decay rules, and giving a bouquet changes the romance candidate’s rate. Keep the bouquet and marriage milestones in mind when deciding whether a short greeting route is sufficient.
Bottom line for daily play
Talking to villagers in Stardew Valley does raise friendship: once per villager per day, normally by 20 points, or by 10 when the villager is in a special animation. Festival conversations count, telephone calls do not, and a heart requires 250 points. Make greetings part of your regular route, then use gifts, quests, movie outings, heart-event choices, and festival opportunities when you want faster gains or need to offset relationship decay.
