tapiui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by the Telephony Application Programming Interface, or TAPI. If Windows says it is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows or the affected legacy application instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What tapiui.dll is and where it belongs
The file is identified as Microsoft Windows(TM) Telephony API UI DLL. TAPI allows applications to communicate with the Windows TAPI service and related telephony devices. Older modem, fax, dial-up, remote-access, call-management, and business applications may depend on it.

Microsoft documentation identifies tapiui.dll in TAPI error-formatting code. It is a Windows component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
On 64-bit Windows, the expected locations are:
| Windows architecture | Normal location |
|---|---|
| 64-bit system component | %SystemRoot%System32 |
| 32-bit system component on 64-bit Windows | %SystemRoot%SysWOW64 |
| 32-bit Windows | %SystemRoot%System32 |
The names can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 conventionally contains 32-bit system files. A 32-bit program that appears to access System32 may be redirected to SysWOW64 by Windows.

Which Windows versions contain it
Public Windows file inventories show historical tapiui.dll builds associated with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. They include examples such as:
| Architecture | Example historical version | Reported size |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 10.0.14393.0 | 0.1 MB |
| 32-bit or 64-bit | 10.0.10586.0 | 0.1 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.3.9600.16384 | 0.1 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.2.9200.16384 | 0.1 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.1.7600.16385 | 0.1 MB |
| 32-bit or 64-bit | 6.0.6000.16386 | 0.1 MB |
This is historical inventory evidence, not a complete Microsoft release catalogue. The correct file varies with Windows build, edition, architecture, servicing state, and language resources. Do not replace it with a file selected only because its version number looks similar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst, identify what is failing
Read the complete error and note the path, if Windows displays one.
- A path under
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64points toward Windows component corruption, deletion, or an architecture mismatch. - If only one older program fails while Windows works normally, that program may have a damaged installation or an application-specific dependency.
- If several Windows DLLs are failing, treat the problem as Windows corruption, malware cleanup, a failed update, or disk damage.
- If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error,” suspect corruption, the wrong architecture, an incomplete update, or an unsigned replacement.
Do not assume a particular game caused the error. The same loader messages can appear in unrelated legacy applications.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when tapiui.dll belongs in a Windows directory or multiple system files are affected.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and allow the operation to finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. It may use Windows Update as a repair source, so the process can take time.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that corrupted files were found and repaired. Test the affected application after restarting.
If SFC says it found corrupted files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow a second time. If DISM cannot find source files, continue to the repair-source section below rather than copying tapiui.dll from another PC.
Repeating SFC without understanding the result can leave you guessing about whether the component store changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows issues and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the normal repair path.

If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM may fail when Windows Update cannot supply a matching source. Use official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition, language, and build as closely as possible.
Microsoft documents the procedure in Repair a Windows Image. The repair source must match the system closely. Using unrelated media can produce another servicing failure.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one legacy program reports the error, repair that installation before changing Windows files.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s saved settings.
- Otherwise uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
For a game, use its launcher’s Verify, Verify integrity, or equivalent file-checking command first. If verification reports damaged files, allow the launcher to restore them. If that fails, reinstall the game from its official source.
A Windows system copy of tapiui.dll should not normally be supplied by an application. If a program has a private copy beside its executable, repair that program rather than overwriting the Windows copy.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file during malware removal.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantine actions.
- Expand the relevant entry and record the file path and detection name.
- Run a current scan before restoring anything.
Do not automatically restore tapiui.dll. First confirm that it came from the expected Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. If malware was involved, remove the infection and then repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Microsoft notes in its Protection History guidance that restoring a quarantined file can cause it to be detected again. Do not create an exclusion unless the file and its origin are trusted.

- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid digital signature from Microsoft.
The expected Windows locations are C:WindowsSystem32 and, on 64-bit Windows, C:WindowsSysWOW64. A copy in a temporary folder, Downloads folder, or an unfamiliar application directory deserves additional scrutiny.
If the file is present but unsigned, has an invalid signature, or produces a “not designed to run” error, do not replace it manually. Run a malware scan followed by DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Restore a recent Windows change
If the problem began after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change, System Restore may reverse the change.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal files untouched. It does not replace a damaged Windows installation in every case. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

This step matters mainly when the failing software uses a modem, fax device, dial-up connection, or other legacy telephony hardware.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Modems, Network adapters, and Ports (COM & LPT).
- Look for a warning icon or the device used by the application.
- Right-click the device and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer or let Windows detect the device.
- Test the telephony application again.
Do not remove an unknown device if you cannot identify it. Microsoft’s older TAPI troubleshooting material connects some TAPI failures with incorrect or damaged modem drivers, but this is less relevant to ordinary modern application launches.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of several drivers is stale can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation through its full version is optional; use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when available.
Fix 7: Reinstall Windows without removing personal files
Use a repair reinstall when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component and the problem affects Windows itself.
On Windows 11, check for the built-in repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now, if available.
- Follow the prompts and keep the option to preserve apps, files, and settings.
Microsoft describes this option in its current-version repair guidance.
If the option is unavailable or fails, perform an in-place repair using matching official Windows installation media. Start the installer from within Windows and select Keep personal files and apps. Do not choose a clean installation unless you have backed up your files and intend to remove the existing installation. Microsoft’s installation-media repair instructions explain the available choices.
What not to do
Do not download a random tapiui.dll
Third-party DLL download pages can provide malware, an incorrect Windows build, or the wrong architecture. A copied file may also hide the real problem in the component store, application installation, or security history.
No official standalone Microsoft tapiui.dll redistributable was verified. The safe sources are Windows servicing, System Restore, an in-place Windows repair, or the affected application’s official installer when the file is application-local.
Do not copy a DLL between System32 and SysWOW64
A 32-bit program needs the 32-bit component. Do not put a 64-bit file in SysWOW64 or a 32-bit file in System32. A file from another Windows release can also introduce dependency and servicing mismatches.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
Do not run:
regsvr32 tapiui.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. tapiui.dll is a Windows TAPI UI and error-resource component, not a documented COM or ActiveX registration target. Microsoft describes the utility in its Regsvr32 documentation.

Is tapiui.dll malware?
It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component, but a filename alone does not prove authenticity. Check that it is in the expected Windows directory, has a valid Microsoft signature, and passes a security scan.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. tapiui.dll belongs to Windows TAPI, not those runtime packages. Install another runtime only when the affected application’s official requirements specifically identify it.
Does Windows 11 always have the same tapiui.dll version?
No. File versions vary by Windows build, edition, architecture, language resources, and servicing level. Repair the installed Windows image rather than choosing a version from an online list.
What if SFC and DISM both fail?
Read the exact result. If DISM cannot locate source files, use matching official installation media as a repair source. If component repair still fails, use Windows 11’s repair reinstall where available, System Restore, or an in-place repair installation.
What if the error only affects an old modem or fax program?
Repair or reinstall the application, then inspect the related modem or telephony device in Device Manager. If Windows itself reports several missing DLLs, prioritize DISM and SFC instead of treating the application as the only cause.
