Tarae: The Unbound has the ingredients of a compelling action RPG: weighty-looking combat, pattern-driven bosses and a striking setting rooted in Buddhist cosmology and East Asian folklore. But it is still in development, and the available previews are not enough to show that it can match Diablo or Path of Exile in build depth, loot or long-term content.
What Tarae: The Unbound is—and what is confirmed
Tarae: The Unbound is a top-down action RPG developed by Boundary and published by Krafton. It was formally revealed during Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live. Steam lists its release date as “To be announced”; some coverage has reported a 2027 window, but that is not an official release commitment.
The confirmed platforms are PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Game8 also names the Epic Games Store, but that platform is not corroborated by the other cited listings, so it should be treated as unconfirmed. There is no announced price, beta schedule or system-requirements list. The Steam listing and available coverage also provide no player-count, sales or review-score figures.
Why it looks like a promising ARPG
Familiar combat, with a distinctive world
The basic pitch will be familiar to fans of Diablo: an isometric view, crowds of enemies to clear and progression built around loot. What could make Tarae feel different is its setting. The game draws on Buddhist cosmology and East Asian folklore, with Buddhist temples as battlegrounds and bosses inspired by East Asian monster illustrations. Windows Central’s preview argues that the mythology and aesthetic give a familiar genre formula a distinct character; PC Gamer likewise highlighted the temple environments and monster-inspired bosses.

Bosses that ask for more than button-mashing
The clearest positive gameplay signal in preview coverage concerns boss fights. Playfront’s preview describes bosses with sophisticated attack patterns that reward counters, dodges and timing rather than simply repeating attacks. That is a useful distinction: screen-clearing combat can make an ARPG feel powerful, while readable, demanding boss patterns can give its fights a different rhythm.
It is still preview-level evidence, not proof that the combat works across a full campaign or remains engaging over dozens of hours. The available coverage supports cautious interest in the fight design, not a verdict on the finished game.

Can its build system rival Path of Exile?
Boundary’s pitch is ambitious. The developer says the Five Elements, Yin and Yang, and karma and reincarnation will influence leveling, equipment and combat style. It also says that choices within a single class can produce entirely different builds. The Steam listing advertises six playable classes, while the game’s materials and coverage claim more than 80 bosses.
Those are developer claims, not systems independently tested in a released game. The available information does not establish how skills are acquired, how equipment changes a build, how many meaningful choices players make, or whether different builds remain viable in endgame content. Path of Exile is a demanding comparison precisely because its buildcrafting and itemization have been tested across years of updates and player experimentation. A thematic set of systems may become distinctive, but it cannot yet demonstrate comparable depth.

What is still unknown beside Diablo and Path of Exile?
| Comparison area | What is known about Tarae | What that means for the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Combat and bosses | Preview coverage describes screen-clearing fights and bosses that reward counters, dodges and timing. | Promising early evidence, but not enough to judge the full game. |
| Buildcrafting | The developer describes six classes and systems involving the Five Elements, Yin and Yang, karma and reincarnation. | The ideas are untested; depth, flexibility and balance are not established. |
| Loot and itemization | The game is pitched as loot-driven, but detailed item systems are not established. | There is no basis yet for comparing its loot loop with either rival. |
| Endgame and long-term content | No endgame loop or ongoing content plan is established in the available information. | Its ability to hold players after the campaign remains unknown. |
| Setting and identity | Buddhist cosmology, East Asian folklore, temple battlegrounds and monster-inspired bosses are part of the pitch. | This is its strongest visible point of difference so far. |
| Business model and live service | Not stated in the available information. | Seasonal structure, monetization and post-launch support cannot be compared. |
| Availability | Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are confirmed; Steam says the release date is “To be announced.” | Players cannot yet judge a finished release or plan around a confirmed launch date. |
Is Tarae just another Diablo clone?
It clearly draws on the same broad action-RPG language: an isometric camera, groups of enemies, loot and character progression. That resemblance is not, by itself, a reason to dismiss it. The previews point to a setting with a more specific cultural and mythological identity than a generic dark-fantasy backdrop, while the boss descriptions suggest combat that may ask for deliberate reactions as well as fast clearing.
But distinct atmosphere and promising encounters answer only part of the question. They do not show whether the game has satisfying itemization, a durable endgame, strong build variety or a compelling plan for ongoing play. Those are central to what makes Diablo and Path of Exile more than a sequence of good fights.

Verdict: promising, not yet a proven rival
Tarae: The Unbound has a credible reason to be on ARPG fans’ watchlists: its mythology gives the familiar formula a clear identity, and early boss descriptions suggest combat with more thought behind it than simple button-mashing. Those strengths justify interest, not a claim that it can already stand alongside Diablo or Path of Exile.
That comparison will depend on what the finished game does with loot, build choices and endgame—and on details such as its release date, price, co-op and live-service plans, none of which are established yet. Until players can see or try more of those systems, the fair assessment is that Tarae looks like a promising contender, not a demonstrated genre rival.
