Choose 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown if you would rather watch a studio quiz built around letters, numbers and fast comic banter. With no other preference, Taskmaster is the stronger starting point: its task format supplies an immediate hook, its scores create a continuing story, and all UK series are currently available free through Channel 4.
Cats Does Countdown is the more specialist pick, but it is an excellent one for viewers who enjoy Countdown’s gameplay, Jimmy Carr’s hosting and a looser panel-comedy atmosphere that works episode by episode.

The short answer: which show fits your taste?
| If you want… | Watch… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A funny competition show | Taskmaster | Five comedians accumulate points across judged tasks, creating a visible season arc. |
| Weird challenges and physical comedy | Taskmaster | The central joke is seeing each contestant interpret and attempt an unusual instruction. |
| A funny quiz | 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown | Its letters-and-numbers rounds provide a familiar game structure beneath the improvisation. |
| Jimmy Carr and rapid panel banter | 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown | The studio format gives more space to jokes, guest chemistry and conversational detours. |
| Something to binge in order | Taskmaster | Scores, rivalries and contestant approaches develop across a series. |
| Something easy to dip into | 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown | Its round-based structure makes individual episodes relatively self-contained. |
These are format choices rather than claims that one programme is objectively funnier. There is no published apples-to-apples current audience comparison establishing a universal winner, and taste matters more than any historical ratings figure.
What Taskmaster is actually offering
A task-first comedy format
Channel 4 describes Taskmaster as a competition in which Greg Davies is the Taskmaster and Alex Horne is his assistant, testing five comedians through “strange and surreal challenges.” The programme’s engine is not a quiz board or a conventional discussion: it is the contrast between an apparently simple instruction and five radically different attempts to satisfy it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That design gives every contestant room to reveal a different comic personality. One person may pursue an elaborate plan, another may look for a shortcut, and another may misunderstand the instruction in an entertaining way. The judging then turns those approaches into points, arguments and running jokes.
Judging and cumulative scores
Greg Davies’ decisions give Taskmaster a clear authority figure, while Alex Horne’s assistant role connects the studio discussion to the filmed tasks. Points accumulate over the course of a series, so an episode has two kinds of payoff: the immediate success or failure of a challenge and its effect on the wider standings.
This is why Taskmaster feels more like a season-long sporting contest than a sequence of unrelated panel appearances. You can care about an individual task, but you can also track who is gaining ground, who is consistently inventive and who is being punished by the scoring.
Why the format rewards watching contestants attempt things
The visual process matters as much as the punchline. Taskmaster lets you compare methods, timing and risk-taking rather than hearing only the final answer. The programme can move from a quiet planning problem to physical slapstick, then back to a studio argument about whether a technical loophole should count.
That variety makes it a good recommendation for someone asking for “a show where comedians actually have to do things.” It also makes episodes more rewarding when watched in sequence, because the audience learns each contestant’s habits and can anticipate how they might attack the next instruction.
What 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown is actually offering
Countdown mechanics with a comedy-panel wrapper
8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown combines Countdown’s letters-and-numbers game with the comic panel style of 8 Out of 10 Cats. Jimmy Carr hosts, while Rachel Riley and Susie Dent provide the established Countdown presentation roles; comic guests and team captains supply the improvisational energy.
The letters rounds ask contestants to build words from selected tiles, while the numbers rounds turn arithmetic into a timed contest. Those mechanics are recognisable even when the surrounding conversation becomes deliberately chaotic. If you enjoy trying to beat the contestants before the solution is revealed, the game itself supplies a dependable reason to keep watching.

Round-based rather than season-arc viewing
The show’s competitive tension is concentrated in individual rounds and episodes. Guests rotate, jokes respond to the people in the room, and the programme is comfortable moving away from the formal game whenever a comic tangent is more entertaining.
That makes Cats Does Countdown a particularly easy conversational watch. You do not need to remember a season’s score narrative to enjoy the next episode, and you can dip in when a favourite comedian appears. The trade-off is that it usually offers less of the sustained contestant journey that defines Taskmaster.
The role of the cast
Channel 4’s established description names Jimmy Carr as host with team captains Sean Lock and Jon Richardson in the earlier line-up. The programme has continued to refresh its comic personnel: Channel 4’s 2025 announcement identified Rob Beckett as a permanent team captain and Judi Love as a regular returning guest, alongside Rachel Riley and Susie Dent.
That combination preserves the Countdown framework while allowing the comic chemistry to change from episode to episode. Viewers who choose a panel show primarily for its guests may therefore find Cats Does Countdown more flexible than a fixed five-person competition.
Comedy engine: doing the task versus talking around the game
| Dimension | Taskmaster | 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown |
|---|---|---|
| Primary source of jokes | Creative interpretations, physical attempts, rule-reading and judging disputes | Word and number games, team banter, guest personalities and improvised studio conversation |
| Where the action happens | Filmed challenges plus a studio scoring session | Primarily a studio set built around Countdown rounds |
| Type of surprise | A contestant discovers an unexpected solution or fails in an unexpected way | A contestant finds an ingenious answer, misses an obvious one or sparks a comic tangent |
| Best viewing attention | Watching methods, details and rule interpretations | Listening for jokes while following enough gameplay to understand the score |
Taskmaster’s humour is often generated by the gap between intention and result. Cats Does Countdown’s humour more often comes from the collision between a formal quiz procedure and performers who are willing to derail it. Neither approach is inherently broader or smarter; they simply ask the viewer to notice different things.
Competition feel and stakes
Taskmaster has the stronger ongoing narrative
Because five regular contestants return through a series and points accumulate, Taskmaster naturally supports predictions and rivalries. A small scoring decision can matter later, and a contestant’s preferred strategy becomes part of the story. This is the better choice when you want a comedy programme with a clear competitive arc.
Cats Does Countdown keeps stakes local
In Cats Does Countdown, the round and the guest line-up usually matter more than a long-running table. The game still has winners and losers, but the emotional investment is often in whether someone can find the best word, solve the numbers target or turn a mistake into a joke.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Choose that structure if you prefer low-commitment viewing. It is possible to watch an episode for the personalities and the banter without treating the series as a campaign that must be followed from beginning to end.
Cast continuity and chemistry
Taskmaster keeps its central frame stable: Greg Davies remains the Taskmaster and Alex Horne remains the assistant and creator, while each series rotates in five new comedians. The changing contestant group gives every series a distinct chemistry without changing the programme’s basic rules.
Cats Does Countdown keeps Jimmy Carr and the Countdown roles as anchors while rotating comic guests and team personnel. Its refreshed line-up means the tone can shift according to who is present. A viewer who values a particular comedian may prefer this model; a viewer who wants to learn a fixed group’s competitive habits may prefer Taskmaster.

Taskmaster’s current scale
Channel 4 reported 209 UK episodes produced in 2026, alongside 13 international versions airing worldwide. The official Taskmaster site also maintains current series and episode pages, confirming an active catalogue. Channel 4 announced on 2 April 2026 that the programme had been recommissioned for six new series, with Davies and Horne continuing in their roles.
That combination of a large back catalogue and a confirmed future run makes Taskmaster the safer choice if you want a programme you can continue watching after the first episode rather than a one-off sampler.

Historical audience figures: useful context, not a current scorecard
An earlier Channel 4 release recorded a consolidated audience of 1.9 million viewers and a 7.7% market share for the then-current Cats Does Countdown series in 2016. Those are historical performance figures for that release, not a current audience estimate and not a direct comparison with Taskmaster.
Using the figures as a present-day popularity ranking would overstate what they show. They are best understood as evidence that the programme had substantial reach at that point in its run.

Pick Taskmaster when you want a format-led binge
- You want surreal, physical or creative challenges.
- You enjoy comparing several solutions to the same problem.
- You want a visible score table and a season-long competition.
- You are asking for a comedy show in which performers have to act, build, plan or improvise under rules.
- You are watching in the UK and want confirmed free access through Channel 4 or its UK YouTube channel.
Pick Cats Does Countdown when you want a conversational quiz
- You enjoy Countdown’s letters and numbers mechanics.
- You prefer studio banter to filmed physical challenges.
- You want to watch individual episodes without following a long score narrative.
- You are choosing primarily for Jimmy Carr, the Countdown presenters or a particular comic guest.
- You like a formal game that can be interrupted by rapid-fire jokes and panel improvisation.
Choose both, but in the right order
If you are undecided, start with Taskmaster because its premise is easier to understand immediately: five comedians, unusual instructions, judging and points. Once you know whether you enjoy comedy built around attempts and rule interpretation, try Cats Does Countdown for a different rhythm of game-led humour.
If the phrase “word games with comedians” is what brought you here, reverse that order. Cats Does Countdown gives you the familiar Countdown structure first, with the panel comedy layered on top.

Taskmaster is the better fit if you want to turn viewing into a physical or creative challenge. The official Taskmaster site lists a travel-sized Taskmaster card game, which gives fans a supported way to play along away from the television. The show’s premise also makes informal home challenges easy to understand: set a task, impose a constraint, attempt it, then argue about the fairest score.

No comparable Cats Does Countdown physical product is established by the available information. Its natural home activity is instead solving the letters and numbers rounds yourself while the episode is running.
Common reasons a viewer may bounce off either show
If Taskmaster feels too chaotic
Give the format a complete task before deciding. Its comedy depends on seeing the instruction, the competing interpretations and the eventual judgement. If you prefer jokes that arrive quickly in conversation, the filmed attempts may feel slower than a conventional panel show.
If Cats Does Countdown feels too loose
Follow the formal rounds rather than treating the programme as pure stand-up. The letters and numbers games provide the spine; the banter is the extra layer. If you want every scene to advance a single competition, Taskmaster’s cumulative scoring will probably suit you better.

Final recommendation
For a first watch with no stated preference, choose Taskmaster. It combines an instantly legible premise with unusual visual comedy, a stable host-and-assistant frame, five contrasting contestants and a score narrative that rewards returning for another episode.
Choose 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown instead when the quiz is the priority: you want letters and numbers, Jimmy Carr’s studio hosting, Countdown expertise and rotating comedians whose chemistry can change from one episode to the next. It is not a lesser version of Taskmaster; it is a different answer to the same need for a funny competition programme.
