tbssvc.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component associated with TBS Service, the user-mode part of TPM Base Services. If Windows says tbssvc.dll is missing or was not found, do not download a replacement DLL first: confirm your Windows version and whether the error actually names tbssvc.dll rather than the different file tbs.dll.
What tbssvc.dll does
TPM Base Services helps Windows applications share access to a Trusted Platform Module. It is used by TPM-dependent features such as BitLocker and other security functions through Windows APIs and services.

The filename is most strongly associated with Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008/R2. Older systems normally placed it in:

Modern Windows documentation still describes TBS, but it does not guarantee that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation will expose the older tbssvc.dll filename or a service named TBS. Therefore, a missing file on a current installation is not automatically proof that Windows is damaged.

tbssvc.dlleven when the current Windows release uses another TPM component.
Fix 1: Confirm Windows version and the exact error
Time needed: 3–5 minutes
Before changing files, establish whether the file should be present.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
winver. - Press Enter and note whether the computer runs Windows 10, Windows 11, or an older release.
- Copy the complete error message.
- Confirm that it says
tbssvc.dll, nottbs.dll,tbs.dll.mui, or another TPM-related file.
If a game or application shows the error, note its name too. A program may be requesting an old Windows component incorrectly. If only one program reports the error while Windows itself works normally, repair that program after completing the Windows checks below.
Do not assume that a TBS service missing from a modern Windows installation proves corruption.

- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
- Start the affected program again.
Updates can repair protected Windows components and replace incompatible servicing files. If the error appeared immediately after an update, open Update history on the Windows Update page and record the update that preceded the problem. Do not remove updates at random.
If the error remains, continue with component repair.

Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to check and replace protected system files. Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands have completed.
- Test the affected application or TPM feature again.
A successful result may say that SFC found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
When manually comparing DISM and SFC results, it is easy to lose track of which component changed and why. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows repair issues, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and it does not replace the need to reinstall the specific application that requested the file.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, use matching Windows installation media or proceed to an in-place repair installation rather than copying tbssvc.dll from another computer.
Fix 4: Check TBS and TPM status
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Checking the service tells you whether Windows exposes the legacy TBS service. It does not by itself prove that a modern Windows installation is broken.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
sc query TBS
- Read the result.
- Press
Windows + R. - Enter:
tpm.msc
- Press Enter.
In the TPM console, check whether Windows reports that the TPM is ready for use or shows an error.
Possible outcomes include:
- If the TBS service exists and is running, the original error may come from a damaged application, a stale reference, or a mismatched DLL.
- If the service does not exist on Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not create it manually. That absence may reflect the way that release implements TPM services.
- If
tpm.msccannot find a compatible TPM, check the computer manufacturer’s UEFI documentation for TPM, Intel PTT, or AMD fTPM settings. - Do not clear the TPM merely to fix a missing-DLL message. Clearing it can affect BitLocker and other security credentials.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a modified or suspicious copy of a system component.

- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
tbssvc.dll. - Expand the event and inspect its location and reason.
- Restore or allow the file only if it is in the expected Windows location and has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- Run a Microsoft Defender scan if malware is suspected.
Do not restore a file simply because an application says it is missing. A quarantined file may have been altered. If Defender detects the restored item again, leave it quarantined and repair Windows instead.
Fix 6: Repair or reinstall the affected program
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If the error appears only when starting one application or game, its installer may contain a stale reference to the legacy TBS filename.
- Close the affected program.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If the program still fails:
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the program again from its developer or publisher’s official source.
- Install the version matching your Windows architecture.
- Start it again.
Reinstalling the affected application is the definitive fix when that application incorrectly bundled or requested a Windows component. Do not place a downloaded DLL in the application’s folder to bypass its installer.
Fix 7: Check drivers and TPM firmware
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver problem can prevent TPM features from working, although a driver reinstall is not a substitute for repairing a missing Windows system component.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Security devices.
- Look for Trusted Platform Module 2.0 or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the device is absent, check Other devices and System devices for an unknown security device. Install firmware or chipset updates only from the computer manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid clearing or uninstalling the TPM unless the manufacturer or Microsoft support instructions specifically require it.
Manually identifying the correct chipset, TPM, and firmware packages can involve hunting through many versions and guessing which driver is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while its full version installs updates; it is optional and cannot repair a Windows component that the installed release does not use.

Windows 11 repair reinstall
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.
System Restore
- Press
Windows + R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore.
System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can reverse recent software, driver, and update changes.
If recovery still fails, perform an in-place repair using installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture. Back up important files first.

Why you should not register or download tbssvc.dll
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 tbssvc.dll
tbssvc.dll is associated with a service loaded by Windows, not a conventional self-registering COM component. regsvr32 generally does not repair this type of service DLL and may only produce another error.
Avoid copying the file from another computer or from a DLL download website. That can introduce:
- Malware or a modified binary
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Invalid signatures and manifests
- Incorrect service configuration
- A file that does not match the component store
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, matching installation media, or the affected program’s official installer instead. There is no Microsoft redistributable package specifically intended to install tbssvc.dll.

FAQ
Is tbssvc.dll a virus?
No. The filename is associated with a legitimate Microsoft TBS component. A copy in an unexpected folder, an invalid Microsoft signature, or a Defender detection requires investigation rather than automatic restoration.
Should I download tbssvc.dll?
No. Repair Windows or reinstall the program that reports the error. A replacement from an unofficial source may be malicious or incompatible.
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer need this file?
No. Current Windows versions may provide TPM functionality without exposing the older tbssvc.dll filename or a visible TBS service.
Is tbssvc.dll the same as tbs.dll?
No. Confirm the exact filename in the error before repairing anything.
Do I need to enable the TPM to restore the DLL?
No. TPM availability affects TPM features, but it does not justify downloading a DLL. Check TPM status with tpm.msc and consult the PC manufacturer’s firmware instructions.
What if SFC says it repaired files but the application still fails?
Restart Windows, test again, and repair or reinstall the affected application. If only that program reports the error, its dependency reference may be stale rather than a Windows-wide failure.
When should I seek further help?
Escalate when DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, the file is repeatedly quarantined, tpm.msc reports firmware errors, or an in-place repair fails. Preserve the exact error, Windows version, sc query TBS output, TPM status, and any Defender event details.
