Team Cherry has announced Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea of Sorrow, a free, nautically themed expansion planned for 2026. The studio says it will add new areas, bosses, tools, and more, but has not given a release date or a complete feature list. Silksong itself is already out: Nintendo lists its release date as September 4, 2025.
What Team Cherry announced
In a holiday update published December 15, 2025, Team Cherry revealed Sea of Sorrow as an expansion to Hollow Knight: Silksong. The studio called it nautically themed and said it would be free for all players in 2026. Team Cherry’s announcement describes “New areas, bosses, tools, and more!” and says Hornet’s adventures continue in the expansion. Read Team Cherry’s announcement.
The studio has not announced a specific launch day or provided a detailed feature breakdown. It said it would share more information shortly before release, so details beyond the announced theme and broad content categories remain unconfirmed.
Silksong is already released
The news is about what comes next, not a release date for the base game. Nintendo of America’s US digital listing for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 gives Hollow Knight: Silksong a release date of September 4, 2025. Silksong is an action-adventure sequel starring Hornet. Team Cherry describes her journey through an unfamiliar kingdom as one involving combat, allies, mysteries, learned abilities, and crafted tools. Team Cherry’s player-count update
Team Cherry said in its 2025 holiday update that Silksong had passed seven million purchasers, with millions more playing through Xbox Game Pass. This is the studio’s reported figure; the update does not provide a precise counting date or methodology, and it is not presented as an independently audited sales total.

The mini-figurines are separate merchandise news
Alongside the expansion, Team Cherry announced a series of mini-figurines depicting Hornet, her friends, and her rivals. The studio credited artist Alex Colvin of Studio Tyto and Fangamer, and directed fans to Fangamer for pre-orders and its Silksong collection. That announcement confirms the figures were offered for pre-order when the update appeared; it does not establish current stock or availability through other retailers.

Team Cherry also said it was working on a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the original Hollow Knight, planned for 2026. The studio described high frame-rate modes, higher resolutions, and additional graphical effects, and said existing Nintendo Switch owners would receive the edition free when it launches. This is an update to the original game, not part of Silksong’s Sea of Sorrow expansion.
