Teen Witch is a 1989 American teen fantasy comedy about Louise Miller, an unpopular high-school student whose witch abilities emerge on her sixteenth birthday. She uses her new powers to chase popularity and the attention of Brad, the football star—but the story’s central question is whether he loves her or has been spellbound.
What is Teen Witch about?
Louise Miller is a teenager with a crush on Brad Powell, a popular football player who does not initially return her feelings. A psychic tells Louise that she has latent, genetically predisposed witch abilities that will blossom when she turns 16. When the prediction comes true, Louise tries to reshape her social life—and win Brad—through magic. The premise turns teenage wish fulfillment into a story about popularity, identity, and whether changing yourself can make someone love you.

#1 Best Overall
- Factory sealed DVD
- Robyn Lively as Louise Miller
- Zelda Rubinstein as Serena
- Dan Gauthier as Brad Powell
- Joshua Miller as Richie
- Dick Sargent as Frank Miller
AFI notes that Sargent’s casting was an in-joke: he was known for playing the husband in Bewitched.
How was Teen Witch received, and why is it a cult film?
AFI’s historical notes say contemporary critics panned the film as a conventional, well-intentioned teen movie. It later developed a cult following. That change in reputation is part of the film’s appeal: its earnest teen-fantasy premise and memorable musical-comedy identity found a lasting audience beyond its initial critical reception.

AFI also records that Robyn Lively and Joshua Miller received Young Artist Award nominations for their performances; those were nominations, not wins. Apple TV’s US listing displayed a 43% Tomatometer score based on 21 reviews when observed on October 8, 2026. That is a changeable aggregator figure, not a permanent measure of the film’s reception.
Is Teen Witch appropriate for teens?
Common Sense Media labels the film PG-13 and recommends it for ages 13 and up. Its parent guide mentions language, suggestive dialogue, a near collision, an attempted sexual assault, and other peril. Reviewer Heather Boerner also questions the relationship dynamic in which Louise changes herself to attract Brad. Families weighing suitability can consult Common Sense Media’s detailed guide.

Where can you watch Teen Witch or find it on DVD?
AFI’s watch page links to MGM+ and Optimum TV. These are listings, not guarantees of lasting availability; access can vary by territory, so check the current service listing where you live. Common Sense Media records DVD or streaming availability dating from July 12, 2005. That establishes a physical-media path, but not current retailer stock, a particular DVD edition, or its extras. Verify the format and edition in any live listing before buying.
