In TEKKEN 8, frames measure time, frame advantage tells you who can act first, punishment is a response to a move you blocked, and neutral is the decision-making around spacing and turns outside guaranteed combos. You can learn the ideas by checking move data, rehearsing defense in Practice mode, and reviewing situations with My Replays & Tips.
What are frames in Tekken 8?
A frame is a unit of game time. Bandai Namco’s TEKKEN 8 Ver. 3.00.01 Battle Adjustment History defines one frame as 1/60 of a second.

Startup: when an attack can hit
Attack startup is the time until the attack’s hitbox becomes active. A move with shorter startup can become active sooner, but startup alone does not tell you whether it will reach, connect, or be the right choice in a particular situation.
Frame advantage: who can act first
Frame advantage is the difference between when the two players can move again after an interaction. At +1F, the player with the advantage can act one frame earlier. Whether that lead produces a useful follow-up still depends on the moves and situation.

- Arcade Quest - In the new single-player mode ‘Arcade Quest’, players can create their own avatar and conquer their rivals in a variety of different arcades. This mode serves as an introduction to the gameplay of TEKKEN 8, allowing players to acquire basic knowledge, learn practical techniques, and enjoy a unique storyline and battles different from regular matches. .
How do I punish a move?
Punishment means responding after you block an opponent’s move with an attack that can reach before the opponent can act again. The right response depends on the blocked move, your character’s available attacks, spacing, and the current game data. There is no single punish table that applies to the entire cast.
Practice the specific situation
- Open Practice mode and choose your character and an opponent character.
- Use the punishment or defense settings to create the move or situation you want to answer.
- Block the move, then test an attack that is fast enough and reaches from that spacing. Check the result rather than assuming a move works because its startup looks suitable.
- Repeat until the block and response are consistent, then try the situation against varied timing or other options.
Bandai Namco’s Version 1.05 patch notes confirm that Practice mode includes punishment and defense settings. They also note that those settings were improved to persist temporarily when replaying with the same character. The notes describe move-property adjustments for some characters, so treat character-specific recommendations as version-dependent and verify them in game.

Use replays to find missed chances
When a match situation is unclear, open My Replays & Tips and review the moment. Bandai Namco says the feature can show AI prompts about mistakes and optimal actions, then let you practice the situation. Use the prompt as a way to investigate the moment and rehearse it, not as a universal punish chart. The feature is described on the official TEKKEN 8 website.

Neutral is the decision-making phase around spacing and turn-taking when neither player is in a guaranteed combo sequence. You are looking for opportunities to approach, defend, interrupt, or make the opponent commit, while accounting for what they may do next. It is not simply standing still: movement, range, timing, and the threat of an attack all shape the exchange.

- Notice the distance at which an attack connects or falls short.
- Pay attention to whether you acted first, blocked, or were interrupted, then adjust your next choice.
- After a match, review the exchange in My Replays & Tips and practice the situation that led to a mistake.
Bandai Namco’s Version 3.00 patch notes describe balance changes intended to clarify character individuality in neutral interactions and mind-games. They also discuss continuing review of risk and reward, particularly around Heat and character-specific powered-up states. That is why exact values and character advice should be checked against the current version rather than treated as permanent.
What should a beginner practice first?
Arcade Quest is presented by Bandai Namco as an introduction to TEKKEN 8 that teaches basic knowledge and practical techniques. Pair it with short, focused Practice sessions: pick one blocked move or one neutral situation, rehearse a response, then look for that situation in your matches. The official TEKKEN 8 website also describes My Replays & Tips and its replay-to-practice flow.
