If The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask feels delayed or choppy on Switch, first work out which symptom you are seeing: slow controller response, an online connection problem, or local visual stutter. They have different causes, and Nintendo’s published guidance does not identify a universal fix or provide a game-specific frame-rate measurement.
Which kind of “lag” are you experiencing?
On Switch, Majora’s Mask is played through the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app. Nintendo announced its availability to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members on February 25, 2022; the original Nintendo 64 release was in 2000. Access requires a Nintendo Account and an active Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo’s availability announcement explains the release, and its N64 collection page describes the service.

- Input lag: You press a button or move the stick, but the game responds later than expected.
- Network latency: Online communication is delayed or unstable. This is distinct from a sluggish response while playing locally.
- Frame drops or stutter: The picture looks uneven or pauses briefly, even if the controller responds normally.
Note whether the issue happens only in Majora’s Mask or in other Switch games too, which controller you are using, and whether the problem is delayed controls, choppy visuals, or an online interruption. That comparison can help narrow the symptom, but it is not a Nintendo-published diagnostic test.
What Nintendo confirms about N64 performance
Nintendo cautions that “There are some differences in game performance and presentation as compared to the original versions of these games.” This is a general statement about the N64 collection, not a measurement of Majora’s Mask. Nintendo’s cited material does not give a frame rate, frame-pacing result, input-latency figure, or game-specific list of known frame drops. Treat claims about a particular area or a precise FPS as unverified unless they are supported by a reliable, specific measurement.

Work through controller input lag
1. Update the N64 app
Nintendo’s support guidance for incorrect button response with its N64 controller instructs players to install available updates for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online. From the Switch HOME Menu, highlight the app, press the + button, and choose Software Update > Via the Internet. Once the update is installed, launch the app and check whether the response changes.
2. Check which controller is involved
Nintendo’s article specifically addresses the Nintendo 64 Controller for Switch, model HAC-043. If you use one, check the label on its rear to confirm the model. Nintendo also advises considering whether a different accessory is in use; if you already have another compatible controller, compare the same action with it. A comparison can show whether the symptom follows one controller, but it is not a guaranteed fix for latency in the game or app.

The N64 collection supports control customization, and the N64-style controller is optional. Buying that controller is not an established remedy for emulation-related delay. If one controller or one button consistently fails while others work, use Nintendo’s current support route for the relevant controller rather than assuming a replacement part will solve it. See Nintendo’s N64 Controller button-response support article.
3. Compare the symptom across games
If the same input feels delayed in other Switch games, that points away from a Majora’s Mask-only symptom, though it does not identify the cause by itself. If it occurs only in this app, record the controller used and the action that feels delayed. Avoid treating a single comparison as proof that either the controller or the game is responsible.

What to do about apparent frame drops
For visual stutter that remains after updating and relaunching the app, note where it occurs and whether it happens again. These are useful observations for support, not proven performance fixes. Nintendo’s general caveat about differences from original N64 versions does not confirm a specific current defect in Majora’s Mask, and the available official information does not establish a particular area as prone to drops.
Do not apply network troubleshooting to local visual stutter without a network symptom. The cited Nintendo guidance does not say that improving Wi-Fi, changing routers, or using a wired connection corrects single-player rendering in the N64 app.

Use network troubleshooting only for online symptoms
Nintendo describes online latency as delays in sending and receiving data over a network. If the problem is an unstable connection or delayed online interaction, test the Switch’s internet connection and check for slow service, weak wireless signal, interference, or an unresponsive network device. Retest after changing one condition so you can tell whether it helped. Nintendo’s steps are in its support guide to latency while playing online.
Do not use the NES low-latency setting as an N64 fix
Nintendo documents a low-latency mode for NES – Nintendo Classics, with effects described for NES online play. That guidance is scoped to the NES app; it does not establish that the setting applies to Majora’s Mask in Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics. Follow N64-specific instructions rather than assuming an NES menu option will reduce N64 input delay. See Nintendo’s NES low-latency support article.
