Christa Pike survived Tennessee’s September 30, 2026, lethal-injection attempt. In an October 2 report, the Associated Press said her attorneys reported in a court filing that Pike was unconscious and on a ventilator at a Nashville-area hospital. Her condition is fast-moving; those medical details were attributed to her lawyers, not to a statement from the hospital.
What is known about Pike’s condition
According to the October 2 Associated Press report, Pike’s attorneys said hospital staff were working to save her life and, as of late Thursday, clear the two doses of pentobarbital. The AP account attributed that information to a filing by the attorneys. The sources available for this account contain no direct statement from the hospital.
The Tennessee Department of Correction confirmed on September 30 that Pike had been taken from Riverbend Maximum Security Institution to an off-site medical facility. Its advisory did not describe her condition or explain what happened during the attempt.
What the different accounts establish—and what they do not
| Source | What it reported or said | What that does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Pike’s attorneys, as reported by the Associated Press on October 2 | They said Pike was unconscious and on a ventilator in hospital, and that staff were working to save her life. | It is not a direct medical statement from the hospital or an independently confirmed account of her condition. |
| Tennessee Department of Correction, September 30 advisory | The department confirmed transport to an off-site medical facility and said it followed the state’s approved execution protocol. | The advisory did not explain the failed attempt or independently establish what occurred medically. |
| Witnesses, as summarized by the Death Penalty Information Center | They reported that Pike continued breathing and snoring after two doses. | This is witness observation relayed by the organization, not a medical finding about the cause or effects of the drugs. |
| Tennessee court, as summarized by the Death Penalty Information Center | The court upheld the state’s lethal-injection protocol after an evidentiary hearing. | The ruling does not mean the court accepted every argument made by either side, or determine what caused this attempt to fail. |
Why the execution attempt failed remains unconfirmed
Pike’s attorneys said they believed problems with the IV lines caused pentobarbital to enter her body instead of her bloodstream. The AP reported their account that a second dose was then administered. These are counsel’s allegations, not an established public medical finding. The department had not publicly explained the failure in the AP’s October 2 report.

The AP reported that the attempt lasted more than an hour. That and the reports of two doses describe this incident only; they should not be treated as evidence of a general execution failure rate.
What happened in the legal challenge before the attempt
Before September 30, Pike challenged Tennessee’s lethal-injection protocol. The Death Penalty Information Center reported that a multi-day evidentiary hearing began August 11 and that the protocol was ultimately upheld. The court outcome is distinct from the parties’ competing arguments.

In that litigation, Pike’s lawyers raised claims about her individual medical and psychological circumstances and argued for alternative execution methods. The state maintained that the evidence did not show serious injury or suffering. Those were positions advanced by the parties; the account of the ruling does not establish that the court accepted each defense claim.
A separate August 2026 petition to the U.S. Supreme Court in Tony Von Carruthers’s case alleged IV-placement and execution-team problems during his May 21 execution attempt. That filing concerns a different prisoner and is an advocate’s account, not a finding about Pike’s execution.

What authorities have done since the attempt
The Associated Press reported that Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent review and indefinitely postponed Pike’s execution and another execution scheduled for 2026. Pike’s lawyers also asked a state court to preserve evidence from the attempt. The reviewed accounts establish these immediate steps, but do not provide findings from the review or a later final execution schedule.
The department’s September 30 advisory stated: “The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office.” That is the department’s position; the advisory did not supply an explanation of the failure.
