On September 22, 2026, a Williamson County Chancery Court denied Roblox’s request to dismiss the consumer-protection case, allowing it to proceed. The ruling did not decide whether Roblox deceived consumers or violated the law.
What Tennessee says Roblox promised
In its September 22, 2026 announcement, the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office said the State alleges Roblox made detailed claims about its safeguards: that every uploaded image, video and audio file was reviewed before going live, safety moderators watched the platform around the clock, and harmful content was removed within minutes. Tennessee alleges Roblox knowingly failed to meet those promises and misled families to attract children. Those are allegations, not facts established by the court.
The State says Roblox asked the court to dismiss the case on three grounds: Section 230 protections for online platforms regarding user-posted content, First Amendment protection, and a claim that Tennessee had not adequately pleaded deception. According to the Attorney General’s summary, the court rejected those arguments because the lawsuit concerns Roblox’s own statements about its safety features, rather than liability for user-generated content, and found the State’s claim sufficiently detailed to continue. The full court order was not included in the State’s announcement, so that account of the court’s reasoning is attributable to the Attorney General’s Office.
Did the judge find Roblox liable?
No final liability determination is reported. The September 22 ruling was a decision on Roblox’s request to dismiss, not a finding that the company lied, deceived Tennessee consumers or violated the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act. The State itself said the order “is not a final determination of whether Roblox actually deceived Tennessee consumers”; it allows the State to proceed and try to prove its case. Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said, “The Court’s ruling means that Roblox will have to answer for those statements.” That is his characterization of the procedural result, not a verdict.

What happens next in the Tennessee case?
The latest located official update is the Tennessee Attorney General’s September 22, 2026 announcement. It does not identify a next hearing, discovery schedule, trial date, later order or settlement. The case may proceed, but the next event is not established by that announcement. A current Williamson County court docket would be needed to verify any subsequent development.
What Roblox says about its safety measures
In an August 2025 response to litigation in Louisiana, Roblox said it had introduced more than 40 safety features during the preceding year. The company described updated parental controls, stricter default settings for users under 13, content-maturity labels, age-estimation technology, chat filters, limits on under-13 messaging, AI and human moderation, blocking and reporting tools, screen-time and spending limits, and work with law enforcement and child-safety groups. These are Roblox’s descriptions of its measures; they do not independently show how effective the controls are or resolve Tennessee’s claims.

Roblox’s June 30, 2026 SEC filing acknowledged that child sexual abuse and exploitation content had been uploaded to the platform despite dedicated technology and trained human moderators. The filing also describes reporting and removal obligations and says the company is defending against claims by private parties and state attorneys general involving alleged contact between offenders and children. This is a company disclosure, not an independent estimate of abuse prevalence.
Roblox also reported that it submitted 24,522 reports to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2024, equal to 0.12% of the 20.3 million total reports submitted to NCMEC that year. That is a company-reported count. On its own, it is neither a measure of abuse prevalence nor proof of how safe the platform is.

How other state cases differ
State actions against Roblox are separate proceedings, not one combined lawsuit. Their allegations, laws and procedural outcomes differ.

These different outcomes should not be combined into a single liability finding. A new complaint, a ruling on a dismissal request and a settlement are distinct procedural events.
