Terraria 1.4.5 initially removed whip stacking, the Summoner tactic of applying different whip tags in sequence. That was not the final state of the update line: version 1.4.5.7 reintroduced stacking and specified that whip-tag effects are calculated independently of application order. The change is about stacking tags, not removing the whip-tag system.
Did Terraria 1.4.5 remove whip stacking?
Yes, in the initial 1.4.5 release. Whip stacking means hitting an enemy with multiple different whips so their tags can affect minion attacks. The later 1.4.5.7 hotfix reversed that removal. Team Terraria announced the 1.4.5 launch on January 27, 2026, with rollout on PC, console, and mobile, except for the bespoke China Mobile edition: Terraria 1.4.5 is here.

So the accurate answer depends on which build is meant: the original 1.4.5 rules removed stacking; 1.4.5.7 brought it back. Platform-specific version numbers and availability can differ.
What changed in version 1.4.5.7?
The 1.4.5.7 notes say whip-tag effects are calculated independently of the order in which they are applied. They also report a tag-damage penalty of 33%, compared with 25% in the 1.4.4 comparison. These figures describe the stated tag-damage penalty, not a tested change in overall Summoner damage. See the official 1.4.5.7 announcement and version notes.

What whip tags do—and what stacking does not mean
Whips still mark enemies with tag effects and direct minions and sentries toward the last enemy struck. When a minion or sentry attacks a tagged target, tag damage is added; some tags also grant summon critical chance or another special effect. Most whip tags last four seconds, while Constellation’s lasts eight seconds, according to the Official Terraria Wiki’s Whips entry.
Whip stacking concerns applying different tags to the same target; it is distinct from whether whips have tags at all. The return of stacking in 1.4.5.7 therefore does not establish that every Summoner setup, whip sequence, or build performs identically.

Does the change make Summoner stronger or weaker?
The patch notes establish the rule change and the stated tag-damage penalty, but they do not provide controlled comparisons of overall Summoner damage or rank builds. The 33% and 25% figures alone are not enough to conclude that the class is stronger or weaker overall, or to identify a best build.
Which build is current?
Team Terraria’s August 2026 State of the Game called 1.4.5.7 the latest and last planned hotfix for Bigger and Boulder, subject to critical fixes. The same update mentions ongoing work on fixes from 1.4.5.8, so that description is not a guarantee that every platform remains on 1.4.5.7 or that no later fix exists. Check your platform’s displayed version and release information; the August 2026 State of the Game provides the stated hotfix context.
