Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA Terraria Journey server uses the same dedicated-server executable and network setup as a Classic, Expert, or Master server. The important differences are that the world must be Journey difficulty, every player must use a Journey character, and the server operator can control access to Journey powers such as duplication, god mode, time changes, weather, infection spread, and spawn rates.

What a Journey server changes
Journey is not a separate server program. You create or load a world with Journey difficulty through the ordinary Terraria dedicated-server process, then apply the same network and administration settings used for any other server. The mode changes gameplay and permissions inside that world.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesJourney worlds and characters are locked to one another: a Journey character can play only in a Journey world, and a Journey world can be accessed only by Journey characters. A player using a Classic, Expert, or Master character cannot join your Journey world, even if the server address and password are correct. Have everyone create or select the right character before connection.
The mode is designed as Terraria’s creative or tourist-style experience, making it easier to acquire items and explore systems without the normal progression pressure. Its central features are the Journey Power Menu, research and duplication, adjustable enemy difficulty, and controls over time, weather, spawning, and biome infection. The official overview is available in the Journey reference.

Before you start
Choose the world and character policy
Decide whether this is a fully permissive sandbox, a host-controlled cooperative world, or a challenge server that uses Journey’s convenience features sparingly. That decision determines the permission values you will set later. Write the policy down before inviting players; otherwise a player can legitimately use a power that another player considers an exploit.
Prepare the server machine and network
- Install the Terraria dedicated-server files for the version your group will use.
- Choose a machine that can remain online for the times your group expects to play.
- Reserve a world file location and a separate place for backups.
- Decide whether players connect over a local network or from the internet. Internet play normally requires allowing the server port through the host firewall and router.
- Keep the server password, operator access, and backup plan separate from the public MOTD.
The dedicated-server reference documents port 7777. You can use that port or select another available port, provided the firewall and router rules match it. The same reference covers the ordinary options for the world path, password, MOTD, ban list, secure mode, and optional UPnP and NPC streaming: Dedicated Server reference.
Step-by-step Journey server setup
-
Create matching content
Tell each player to create or bring a Journey character. Do this before troubleshooting network access; a mode mismatch produces a connection failure that can look like a server problem.
-
Start the normal dedicated server
Launch Terraria’s standard dedicated-server process. You may answer its interactive prompts or supply the startup parameters through a configuration file. There is no separate “Journey server” executable.
-
Create or select a Journey world
When the server asks for the world, create a new world or select an existing one. The dedicated-server difficulty values are documented as 0 for Normal/Classic, 1 for Expert, 2 for Master, and 3 for Journey. Use value 3 when creating or selecting the Journey world, then confirm that the loaded world is the intended file and difficulty.
-
Apply ordinary server settings
Set the listening port, password, MOTD, world path, ban list, and secure mode as appropriate. If you use UPnP or NPC streaming, enable them only when they fit your network and administration plan. A password protects entry, but it does not by itself restrict Journey powers.

Set Journey permissions before anyone joins
Add the individual
journeypermission_*settings to the server configuration. Each setting controls one Journey power. The documented values are:Value Meaning Use case 0 Locked for everyone Challenge rules or a power the group does not want available 1 Only the host may change it Host-controlled progression and event management 2 Everyone may change it Unrestricted sandbox play Representative keys include
journeypermission_godmode,journeypermission_setdifficulty,journeypermission_setspawnrate,journeypermission_time_setfrozen,journeypermission_rain_setfrozen,journeypermission_wind_setfrozen,journeypermission_biomespread_setfrozen, andjourneypermission_increaseplacementrange. Use the exact spelling and capitalization shown by the dedicated-server documentation. -
Publish the rules
Put the permission policy in the MOTD or a pinned group message. Explain whether players may research and duplicate freely, change the difficulty slider, alter spawn rates, use god mode, freeze time, or stop biome spread. The settings are technical controls; the MOTD turns them into understandable rules.

Test both roles
Join once as the host and once as a regular player. Open the Journey Power Menu and check every power you configured. The host should be able to change settings marked

How Journey differs from Classic or “normal” mode
| System | Classic/normal server | Journey server |
|---|---|---|
| Character and world pairing | Uses the normal character/world compatibility rules. | Journey characters can enter only Journey worlds, and Journey worlds accept only Journey characters. |
| Progression | Resources must be gathered and consumed normally. | Players can research items and, after meeting the required research amount, duplicate them indefinitely. |
| Enemy difficulty | The world’s selected difficulty is not a live Journey slider. | A live slider ranges from 0.5× to 3× normal difficulty. |
| Power permissions | No Journey Power Menu or per-power Journey permission flags. | Each supported Journey power can be locked, host-only, or available to everyone. |
| Spawn rate | Uses the ordinary game rules for spawning. | The Journey slider can range from 0× to 10× the normal rate, subject to game rules and exceptions. |
| Environment | Does not provide Journey controls for freezing or changing these systems. | Can provide controls for time, rain, wind, biome infection spread, and related environmental behavior. |
Research and duplication rules
Research changes the economy of the world more than any individual combat setting. Place an item into the Research interface and contribute the required number of copies. Once the requirement is complete, that item becomes available for unlimited duplication from the Duplication menu.
Because duplication removes much of the usual scarcity, agree on a policy before the first boss or major resource hunt. A group can allow unrestricted duplication, permit it only for building materials, or lock the relevant Journey access while preserving other powers. The server cannot infer your preferred progression style; it enforces the permissions you choose.
Questions to settle with the group
- Are boss summons and rare drops duplicated immediately or only after one legitimate acquisition?
- May players duplicate ammunition, potions, building blocks, and wiring without restriction?
- Does a player’s research progress set the rule for everyone, or does the group treat the world as a shared sandbox?
Difficulty is adjustable after the world starts
Journey has its own baseline below Classic: enemies are half as difficult by default. The Journey difficulty slider runs from 0.5× to 3× normal difficulty. The documented points correspond to Journey at 0.5×, Classic at 1×, Expert at 2×, and Master at 3×.
Moving the slider can activate the enemy statistics, artificial intelligence changes, drop behavior, and exclusive content associated with the corresponding difficulty. Treat it as a live world rule rather than a cosmetic setting. If one player raises it for a fight and another lowers it afterward, the group’s progression experience changes even though the world file remains the same.
Use journeypermission_setdifficulty to decide who can move the slider. Setting that key to 0 prevents changes, 1 limits changes to the host, and 2 allows every player to change it.
Spawn-rate, time, and weather controls
Spawn rate
The Journey enemy-spawn slider ranges from 0×, which suppresses ordinary enemy and critter spawning, to 10× the normal rate, subject to the game’s rules and exceptions. A zero setting can make building safe; a high setting can accelerate farming and make ordinary travel dangerous. It also changes event pacing, so document who may adjust it with journeypermission_setspawnrate.
Time and weather
Depending on permissions, players may be able to set or freeze time, alter time speed, and freeze or change rain and wind. The representative controls are journeypermission_time_setfrozen, journeypermission_rain_setfrozen, and journeypermission_wind_setfrozen. Decide whether these are building conveniences, host-operated event tools, or prohibited shortcuts.
Placement range and personal powers
Personal conveniences such as god mode and increased placement range can be governed independently. For example, journeypermission_godmode and journeypermission_increaseplacementrange can be set differently from the difficulty or weather controls. This lets a server permit creative building assistance without granting combat invulnerability.

Biome infection: what the control does and does not do
Journey can freeze the spread of Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow through the biome-spread control. The setting prevents further spread; it does not reverse areas that have already changed and does not undo the initial Hardmode diagonal stripes. If your world is already infected, freezing spread is containment, not restoration. Back up the world before making major progression decisions so you can recover from an unwanted state.
Use journeypermission_biomespread_setfrozen to establish who may change this setting. Include the limitation in your group rules so players do not assume that enabling the control cleanses existing biomes.

Permission profiles that work for different groups
Open sandbox
Set the powers your group wants to share to 2. Everyone can adjust difficulty, spawning, environment, and personal powers, while research and duplication remain part of the normal Journey interface. This profile is convenient for a casual building or exploration server, but it requires trust because any player can change the world’s conditions.
Host-controlled cooperative world
Set progression-changing powers such as difficulty, spawn rate, time, weather, and infection spread to 1. The host can prepare events, pause biome spread, or change conditions for a building session while regular players retain access only to the powers you intentionally share.
Challenge Journey
Set most powers to 0, retain only the features that support accessibility or building, and state the exceptions in the MOTD. For example, you might lock god mode and duplication while allowing a host to freeze biome spread. This keeps the Journey character/world requirement while restoring some of the resource and survival pressure associated with normal play.
Example MOTD
Journey server rules:
- Journey characters only.
- Difficulty and spawn rate: host-controlled.
- God mode: locked.
- Duplication: allowed after the group agrees an item has been researched.
- Time and weather: host-controlled.
- Biome spread: frozen; existing spread is not reversed.
Troubleshooting a Journey server
“My character cannot join”
Confirm that the character is Journey and that the selected world was created or loaded with difficulty value 3. A correct address, port, and password cannot overcome a mode mismatch.
The server opened the wrong world or difficulty
Stop and restart the server with the intended world path and Journey difficulty value. Verify the world selection in the startup prompts or configuration before players enter. Do not rely on the filename alone when several worlds have similar names.
A regular player can change a locked power
Check the exact journeypermission_* key, its value, and whether the server was restarted or reloaded after editing the configuration. Test with a genuinely non-host account; the host-only value 1 is supposed to allow the host while blocking others.
Players expected biome cleansing, but spread is still present
The freeze control stops additional spread only. It does not remove existing Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow and does not undo Hardmode’s original diagonal stripes.
Spawning or progression feels unexpectedly different
Inspect the Journey difficulty and spawn-rate sliders. A setting of 0× spawn rate, a 10× rate, or a difficulty change from 0.5× to 3× can radically alter combat and farming. Check who has permission to change those controls, then publish the final values in the MOTD.
Internet players cannot connect
Check that the configured port matches the firewall and router forwarding rule, that the server process is running, and that the password is being entered exactly. The Journey-specific checks come afterward: the world must be Journey and every connecting character must also be Journey.
When managed hosting is worth considering
Running the server yourself gives you direct control over the world file and configuration, but you are responsible for port forwarding, uptime, backups, updates, firewall rules, and recovery when the host machine is unavailable. A managed Terraria host can be useful when your group needs a continuously available world or the operator does not want to maintain network infrastructure.
Before choosing a service, verify that it exposes the Journey difficulty setting and the individual journeypermission_* keys rather than offering only a simplified game-mode selector. Confirm that you can download backups, restore an earlier world, edit the MOTD, change the port or password, and access server logs. Ask how configuration changes are applied and whether a restart is required. These checks matter more for Journey than a generic uptime promise because an unnoticed permission change can alter duplication, difficulty, or biome rules for everyone.
