If friends cannot join your Terraria server, opening port 7777 alone is not enough. The dedicated server must actually be listening on that port, the host firewall must allow it, a home router must forward it to the correct computer, and players must use the host’s current external IP with the configured port. Work through those layers in order: first prove the server works on the local network, then diagnose internet routing, firewall, address, or cloud-provider rules.

What port 7777 does in Terraria
7777 is the default port for a Terraria dedicated server. It is a default, not a permanent requirement: the server can use another port when serverconfig.txt contains a different port= value. The value in that file is authoritative. If the server is configured for port=7788, forwarding 7777 and asking players to join on 7777 will fail even though the server itself is healthy.

A private address such as 192.168.x.x is useful for testing inside the same home network, but it is not normally reachable from the public internet. The address 127.0.0.1 always means “this same computer,” so giving it to a friend points their game back at their own machine. An address beginning with 169. indicates a local network problem rather than a usable server address.

Run this diagnosis in order
Do not change several layers at once. Each test narrows the failure and prevents you from troubleshooting a router when the server is not listening, or changing the world when the real issue is an address.

1. Confirm the server process and configured port
- Start the Terraria dedicated server and leave its console visible. Confirm that it completes startup rather than exiting with an error.
- Open
serverconfig.txtand locate theport=line. Record the exact number; use 7777 only if the file saysport=7777or the server is using its default. - Use that same number in the client’s join screen. A custom port must be entered with the address, for example
203.0.113.25:7788, rather than assuming 7777. - If you edit the configuration, stop and restart the dedicated server before testing. A running process will not necessarily adopt an unsaved or newly edited value.
This check distinguishes “the wrong port is exposed” from “the right port is blocked.” Port 7777 is not evidence that the process is listening there; the console and configuration are the evidence.
2. Test from another device on the same LAN
Have a second computer on the host’s home network join using the server computer’s private IPv4 address and configured port. This is a local test; do not use the public address first.

- LAN fails: concentrate on the server process, the configured port, the host firewall, or the server computer’s local network connection.
Testing locally is important because many routers do not support reliable “hairpin” access to the home’s own public address. A failed test from inside the same house using the public IP does not by itself prove that internet forwarding is broken.
3. Give players the correct address
For a home-hosted game, internet players need the current external IP of the router, followed by the configured port. They should not receive 127.0.0.1, the server’s private address, or an old public address saved from a previous session.
If the host’s own network information shows an address beginning with 169., fix the local network connection first. That range is an automatic local address and is not a usable endpoint for friends. If the router’s public address changes, update the address sent to players and recheck the forwarding rule.

4. Allow Terraria through the host firewall
A server can be running and still be invisible because the operating system rejects inbound traffic. Create an inbound firewall rule for TerrariaServer.exe, or create one for the exact configured port. Apply the rule to the network profile used by the server computer, then retry the LAN test.

Whichever method you choose, it must cover the port the configuration actually uses. The official Terraria setup guidance specifically warns that the firewall may block either the executable or port 7777.
5. Forward the router port to the server computer
On a residential network, the router normally owns the public address while the server computer has a private address. Port forwarding tells the router where an incoming connection should go.
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface and open its Port Forwarding, NAT, or Virtual Server page.
- Create a rule whose external port is the configured Terraria port. For the default, use TCP 7777; for a custom server port, use that number instead.
- Set the destination to the server computer’s current private IPv4 address and the corresponding internal port.
- Save or apply the rule, then restart networking or the router only if the router requires it. Retest from outside the home network.
Reserve a DHCP lease or assign a stable LAN address to the server computer. Without that step, the router can later give the computer a different private address, leaving the forwarding rule pointed at the wrong device even though the rule still appears enabled.
6. Check the firewall supplied by a cloud host
A cloud virtual machine has no home router to configure, but it usually has a provider-level security group or network firewall. Add an inbound rule for the configured Terraria port. Cloud deployments should permit the required port on both TCP and UDP in the provider’s firewall controls, as well as in the operating system firewall on the virtual machine.

If the provider rule is correct but the operating-system rule is not, the result looks identical to a closed cloud port. Check both layers before rebuilding the server or world.
7. Retest after every network change
Restarting a router can change the server computer’s private address. An internet-provider change or lease renewal can change the public address. After either event, verify the forwarding destination, verify the external address, and send players the updated address and port. A stale address is a common reason a previously working server appears to fail without any Terraria update.
Home-hosting setup: the complete path
For a normal home server, an outside player’s connection travels through several checkpoints:
- The player’s client resolves the host’s current external IP and configured port.
- The router receives the incoming traffic on that external port.
- The router’s NAT rule translates it to the server computer’s private IPv4 address.
- The host firewall permits the traffic or the server executable.
- The Terraria process accepts it on the port shown in
serverconfig.txt.
Every checkpoint must agree on the same port. If the server uses 7777 but the router forwards 7788, the router can be working perfectly and still deliver traffic to nowhere. If the router forwards to yesterday’s private address, the packet reaches a different device. If the host firewall blocks the executable, a correct NAT rule cannot overcome that local rejection.
When port forwarding is impossible
Carrier-grade NAT or a restricted router
Some internet connections place customers behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), where the visible public address is shared and the home router cannot accept unsolicited inbound connections. A forwarding rule on the home router cannot create an inbound path that the carrier does not provide. If LAN tests pass, the server is listening, and both firewall layers are open but outside players still cannot connect, ask the internet provider whether the connection uses CGNAT or supplies a publicly reachable address.

Some managed networks also block inbound connections or do not expose router settings. In those cases, repeatedly recreating the same 7777 rule will not solve the upstream restriction.
VPN-based virtual LAN
The official Terraria wiki lists Hamachi and Radmin VPN as alternatives when forwarding is unavailable. Every player must install the same VPN product, join the same virtual network, and connect using the host’s VPN-assigned address and configured Terraria port. This shifts the work from router configuration to coordinating software and membership for every participant.

- Host effort: create the virtual network, keep the VPN client running, and allow Terraria through the host firewall.
- Player effort: install the VPN client and join the host’s network before launching Terraria.
- Maintenance: every participant must remain in the same virtual network, and the host must keep the VPN session available.
Hosted Terraria server
A hosted server removes the home-router forwarding step. You still need to configure the Terraria port in the server, open that port in the host’s provider firewall, and use the endpoint supplied by the hosting environment. This is most useful when the home connection uses CGNAT or the host does not want to expose a residential router port. It does not remove firewall or configuration responsibilities; it relocates them to the hosted machine and provider controls.

Common mistakes and what they mean
“Port 7777 is open, but nobody can connect”
“Open” may describe only one layer. Confirm that the process listens on 7777, the host firewall allows it, the router forwards TCP 7777 to the current private address, and players use the current external IP. If the server uses a custom port, replace 7777 in every one of those checks.
“It works on LAN but not over the internet”
The server and local firewall are the first suspects to clear; successful LAN access makes the router’s NAT path, the public address, CGNAT, and provider firewall the useful next targets. Check the router’s WAN address against the external address shown to players and confirm that the forwarding rule points to the server computer, not another household device.

“The client is stuck on Connecting to [IP]:7777”
Read the displayed IP and port literally. If the IP is 127.0.0.1, the player is connecting to their own computer. If it is a private LAN address while the player is outside the home, the endpoint is not publicly routable. If the port shown is 7777 but serverconfig.txt specifies another value, correct the join entry or the server configuration. If both are correct, continue through the firewall and NAT checks rather than changing the world file.
“The router rule worked yesterday”
Verify both addresses again. A DHCP change can move the server to another private IPv4 address, and a public-address change can make the old join information obsolete. Reserve the server’s LAN lease and distribute the current external address after network changes.
“The cloud server is running, but it is unreachable”
Check the provider security-group or firewall rule for the configured port and the operating-system firewall on the virtual machine. Cloud controls are separate from Terraria’s configuration, so a running process does not prove that provider traffic is permitted.
A repeatable checklist before inviting friends
- The dedicated server starts and remains running.
serverconfig.txtcontains the port you intend to use, or you have recorded the default 7777.- A second device on the same LAN can join with the server’s private IPv4 address.
- The host firewall permits
TerrariaServer.exeor the exact configured port. - A home router forwards the external port to the server computer’s reserved private IPv4 address.
- A cloud deployment has the required provider firewall rule and matching operating-system rule.
- Internet players receive the current external IP and the configured port, not
127.0.0.1or a private address. - You have rechecked both addresses after router restarts, DHCP changes, or internet-service changes.
If the LAN test fails, stay on the server, configuration, and host-firewall layers. If it succeeds, stop changing the world and work outward through NAT, public addressing, CGNAT, and provider firewalls. That split is the fastest way to turn “7777 is not working” into one specific setting that needs correction.
