Terraria Server World Keeps Regenerating on Restart: How to Fix It

A Terraria world that regenerates after every restart is usually a path, save, permission, or storage problem. This guide shows how to identify the active .wld file, disable autocreate, test controlled saves, fix Vanilla and TShock configurations, and recover safely.

If a Terraria server looks like it generates a fresh world after every restart, it is usually loading a different .wld file—or failing to find the intended file and creating one because autocreate is enabled. Confirm the path and filename in the real startup command, disable automatic creation while diagnosing, save with the server console, and verify that the process can write to the directory. If those checks pass, investigate container mounts, restore jobs, and restart scripts.

What “regenerating” usually means

Terraria does not decide that a changed world should be replaced merely because the server was restarted. The world selected by the launch configuration is the persistent state. The official server accepts a -world file path, and a server configuration can contain a world= entry. When the expected file is missing, autocreate can create a world instead. A restart that appears to reset the map therefore points first to file selection, not to normal world behavior.

The server is opening another file

Two files can have the same visible world name while living in different directories, and capitalization or an extension mismatch can select a different file on systems where those details matter. You may be editing a copy in a desktop Terraria folder while the dedicated server reads a mounted directory, or a wrapper script may pass an absolute path that overrides the setting you changed. The startup log and the command that actually launched the process are more authoritative than a panel label or a file manager shortcut.

The expected file is not found

With automatic creation enabled, a typo, missing mount, wrong working directory, or inaccessible folder can look like a successful start: the server simply creates a new world. During diagnosis, remove or comment out autocreate and seed when you intend to load an existing world. A failed start is safer than silently replacing your test world with a new one.

The last changes were never saved

The official command list includes save, exit (which shuts down and saves), and exit-nosave. The server may autosave periodically, but the documented controlled shutdown path is to save and then use exit. If a panel kills the process, the operating system terminates it, or an administrator uses exit-nosave, recent tile changes can be absent on the next start even though the correct file is selected.

The live storage is being replaced

Containers can write to an ephemeral filesystem when the host volume is not mounted at the path used by the server. A scheduled restore, provider snapshot, deployment hook, or restart script can also copy an older world over the live one. A read-only mount, a full disk, or insufficient permissions produces a similar symptom: the process starts, but the durable file never receives the new state.

Protect the current world before changing settings

Do not overwrite files while you are still trying to identify the active copy. Stop the server as safely as the control panel allows, then make a working copy of every candidate file and the existing backup directory.

  1. Use the server console or panel to issue save, then exit. If the process is already unresponsive, stop it without deleting its data volume.
  2. Copy the currently selected .wld file, any adjacent .bak file, and the complete backup directory to storage outside the live server volume.
  3. Record each copy’s filename, full path, and modification time. Keep the failing file unchanged so that a corruption or restore problem can be investigated later.
  4. Only after those copies exist should you edit startup arguments, configuration files, mount definitions, or automated restart tasks.

If you cannot identify which file is active, copy every plausible .wld file first. A safe duplicate is more useful than a guess followed by an irreversible overwrite.

Locate the file the server should be using

These are the standard local Worlds directories listed in the Terraria setup guidance:

Platform Default Worlds directory
Windows C:Users<user>DocumentsMy GamesTerrariaWorlds
Linux ~/.local/share/Terraria/Worlds
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Worlds

A dedicated server, hosted panel, or container may deliberately use another directory. Examples of mount targets include /data and /worlds, but the provider can choose a different path. Treat the path printed during startup and the launch command as authoritative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the exact filename

  • Confirm the complete basename, including capitalization where the filesystem distinguishes it.
  • Confirm that the file ends in .wld, not a second extension such as .wld.bak.
  • Compare the modification time with a change you made recently. A file that predates the change is probably not the active copy.
  • Check whether more than one world with a similar name exists in different directories.

Do not infer the active location from the folder used by the Terraria client. A server launched by a service account, a container image, or a hosting panel commonly has its own data root.

Audit every launch layer

Read the settings that start the process, not only the file you normally edit. A typical installation can have a server configuration, a Windows batch file or shell script, a Docker or systemd unit, and panel-level arguments. Any later command-line option can change the effective path.

Vanilla server configuration

For an existing world, the configuration’s world= entry should identify the intended file. If you deliberately relocate the Worlds directory, set worldpath= to that directory. An absolute path avoids ambiguity when a service starts with a different working directory.

world=/absolute/path/to/World.wld
worldpath=/absolute/path/to/Worlds

Use the option that matches your deployment. Do not point world= at a filename in one directory while assuming worldpath= will relocate it elsewhere without checking the server’s startup output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Command-line options and wrappers

The equivalent command-line form is:

TerrariaServer -world "/absolute/path/to/World.wld"

Inspect start-server.bat, a shell script, a systemd unit, a Docker command, and the panel’s startup field. Remove duplicate or conflicting -world arguments so there is one deliberate value. TShock documents -worldpath and states that command-line options override configuration options; therefore, a TShock launch command can defeat an apparently correct configuration file.

Temporarily disable automatic creation

Comment out or remove autocreate and seed while testing an existing world. These options are appropriate when you intentionally want to generate a new map, not when you are proving persistence. Once the server starts only when the intended file is present, a missing mount or typo becomes an explicit error instead of a silent reset.

Check service and panel settings

  • In systemd, inspect the unit’s ExecStart, working directory, user, and any environment file it references.
  • In Docker, inspect both the container path in the command and the host-to-container volume mapping. The mounted host directory must be the same directory that -world or -worldpath uses.
  • In a game panel, check the startup command, selected server image, file-management root, scheduled tasks, and any “ reinstall ” or “reset on restart” option.
  • Search restart scripts for copy, restore, synchronization, or cleanup commands that run before the server starts.

Run a controlled persistence test

A single, unmistakable change lets you distinguish a path problem from a save problem. Perform this test only after you have copied the original files.

  1. Start the server with automatic creation disabled and note the exact world path printed during startup.
  2. Join the world and make one visible tile change in a location you can find immediately after reconnecting.
  3. Return to the server console and enter save. Wait for the command to complete.
  4. Enter exit and wait for the process to stop normally. Do not use exit-nosave.
  5. Before restarting, check the selected file’s modification time and size. The time should reflect the controlled save.
  6. Start the same command again and inspect the marked location.
Observation Likely direction
The tile change remains and the selected file’s time advances Basic persistence works; investigate automation that runs during ordinary restarts.
The tile change disappears and the file time does not advance Inspect permissions, read-only storage, disk capacity, and whether the process really received save and exit.
The log names a different file than the one you checked Correct the effective -world, world=, or -worldpath value.
The server creates a world only when the intended file is absent Keep autocreate disabled until the path or mount problem is fixed.

Verify permissions, mounts, and disk state

Filesystem access

The account running the server must be able to read the directory and write the world file. A file can appear editable to your administrator account while remaining read-only to the service account. Check the owner, group, directory permissions, and any mandatory access-control policy used by the host. Correct access for the service user rather than running the game server as an unrestricted administrator.

  • Confirm that the directory exists before startup.
  • Confirm that the service user can create a temporary file there and remove it.
  • Check free disk space and inode availability; a full volume can prevent a save.
  • Look for read-only filesystem errors in the server, container, or host logs.

Container volume persistence

Inside a container, a path such as /data is not automatically durable. Verify that the host directory is mounted at precisely that path and that the mount survives container recreation, not merely a process restart. If the server writes to the image’s writable layer, a replacement container starts with a clean directory and may generate a new world. Compare the host file’s modification time before and after the controlled test.

Restart and restore automation

If the controlled test succeeds but a scheduled reboot loses the change, inspect every action between shutdown and startup. Common culprits include a deployment script copying a template world, a provider snapshot restoring an older generation, a synchronization job using the wrong direction, and a cleanup task deleting the live directory. Temporarily disable one automation layer at a time and repeat the marked-tile test.

Vanilla and TShock settings to check

Area Vanilla server TShock
World selection -world or world= Those settings plus TShock’s launch arguments
World directory relocation worldpath= when deliberately moving the Worlds directory -worldpath; command-line values override configuration values
Save controls Console commands save, exit, and exit-nosave The same server commands, plus TShock save and backup settings
Backup location Use your own independent copy of the world files Automatic backups are stored in tshock/backups

Vanilla diagnosis

Start with an absolute -world path or a matching world= entry, then leave autocreate disabled. Confirm the path in the startup log, run the controlled save test, and make sure the server is stopped with exit. Set worldpath= only when you intentionally relocate the directory; adding it casually can make the server look in a new location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TShock diagnosis

Review -worldpath, -configpath, and all wrapper arguments together. TShock exposes AutoSave, BackupInterval, BackupKeepFor, SaveWorldOnCrash, and SaveWorldOnLastPlayerExit. The crash setting controls whether the world is saved after an unhandled-exception crash; it is not a substitute for a clean shutdown. Confirm the configured backup retention and periodically copy tshock/backups away from the live volume.

Recover a world that was replaced or may be corrupt

When an older copy is available

  1. Stop the server and preserve the current file under a new name. Do not overwrite it while testing recovery.
  2. Choose a known-good .wld copy from your independent backup or TShock’s backup directory.
  3. Place the copy in the intended world directory under a new filename, then point -world or world= to that filename.
  4. Start with autocreate disabled and confirm that the recovered map loads.
  5. After verification, make a fresh backup before allowing players to reconnect.

Using a new filename keeps the failed file available for comparison and prevents a mistaken path from silently selecting it again.

When corruption is suspected

Stop the server, preserve the failing world and its logs, and test a known-good copy under a new name. Do not repeatedly start and stop the suspect file while trying random configuration changes; each save can make forensic comparison harder. If the known-good copy persists but the current file does not, treat corruption and the replacement process as separate problems: first stabilize the launch path and backups, then investigate the damaged file.

Build protection against future resets

  • Keep at least two generations of the .wld file on storage outside the live server volume.
  • Before a Terraria upgrade, mod change, or migration, issue save, then exit, copy the world, and record its modification time.
  • For TShock, configure BackupInterval and BackupKeepFor, verify that tshock/backups is populated, and copy those backups to another host or drive.
  • Use an absolute world path and keep one source of truth for startup arguments.
  • Leave autocreate off on production instances unless automatic creation is an intentional part of the deployment.
  • Test a restore periodically. A backup that has never been opened is not a verified recovery plan.
  • Monitor disk space and alert on failed saves, read-only mounts, and changes to the world file’s modification time.

Local repair or managed hosting?

Moving to managed hosting does not by itself solve a regeneration loop. The deciding questions are operational: who controls the exact world-file path, who owns restart automation, and whether you can retrieve and restore backups independently of the live instance.

Decision axis Questions to answer
World persistence Is the selected .wld stored on a durable volume, and can you see its full path?
Save and shutdown Can you issue save and exit rather than relying on a forced process kill?
Backups How many generations are retained, where are they stored, and can you download and restore one?
Filesystem permissions Can the server process write to the directory, and are disk-full or read-only failures visible?
Restart ownership Can you inspect scripts, scheduled tasks, snapshots, and restore hooks that run during a reboot?

If a provider cannot show the effective world path or explain what happens to the data volume during a restart, treat that as an unresolved persistence risk. A transparent local configuration is often safer than a managed instance whose restore behavior you cannot inspect.

A compact diagnostic checklist

  1. Cleanly save and exit, then copy the active .wld, .bak, and backup directory.
  2. Record the full path and filename printed at startup.
  3. Compare that path with the file containing your latest visible change.
  4. Search the config, batch or shell script, Docker or systemd unit, panel settings, and TShock arguments for conflicting -world, -worldpath, or world= values.
  5. Disable autocreate and seed while loading the existing world.
  6. Verify service-user write access, free space, and persistent volume mounts.
  7. Make one marked tile change, run save, run exit, and compare the file time after restart.
  8. If the change survives the manual test but not a scheduled restart, inspect restore jobs and restart scripts.
  9. If corruption is possible, preserve the failing file and restore a known-good copy under a new filename.

Following this order separates a wrong-file problem from a failed save, an inaccessible directory, and an external restore. Once the server starts with the intended file and a controlled save survives a restart, the recurring regeneration symptom has been eliminated at its cause rather than hidden with another generated world.
