Short answer: If local PC gaming is a major reason you are buying a laptop, choose an x86 Windows laptop with a current Intel or AMD processor instead of a Snapdragon X Elite model. Snapdragon X Elite laptops can run some games, and their compatibility has improved, but the experience remains too inconsistent for a large Steam, Epic, Battle.net, or competitive-multiplayer library.
This is a compatibility warning, not a claim that Snapdragon X Elite laptops cannot play games. In PCWorld’s June 28, 2024 side-by-side testing, several prominent games failed to launch or became unstable on a Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 with Snapdragon X Elite. Games that did run were often slower and less consistent than on the Intel Arc-based comparison laptop.
The buying verdict
Buy a Snapdragon X Elite laptop for battery life, quiet operation, portability, and everyday productivity—not as a dependable general-purpose gaming machine.
It can be a reasonable choice if you mainly play a small selection of verified lightweight or older games, or if you plan to stream games through a cloud service. It is a poor choice if you expect to install and play a broad Windows library, particularly competitive shooters and multiplayer games protected by anti-cheat software.

| What you want to do | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play a large local Windows game library | Intel or AMD x86 Windows laptop | Lower compatibility risk and more predictable drivers, launchers, graphics APIs, and anti-cheat support |
| Play a few older or lightweight games | Snapdragon X Elite can work, after checking each title | Some games run acceptably, but results vary by game and software version |
| Use a laptop mainly for work and stream games occasionally | Snapdragon X Elite may make sense | Cloud gaming moves most game execution away from the laptop |
The key distinction is that this platform’s weakness is not simply processor speed. A game has to survive Arm translation, use a supported graphics path, communicate correctly with the driver, load its launcher, and pass any anti-cheat checks. Failure at any one of those stages can prevent the game from starting.
What the published test actually found
PCWorld compared a Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 using the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite X1E-80-100 with a Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 2-in-1 using an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H and Intel Arc graphics. This is a useful warning sign, not a universal benchmark for every Snapdragon laptop or every future driver release.

In the games that ran, the Intel Arc system was generally faster and more consistent. PCWorld recorded the following results:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Game | Snapdragon X Elite result | Intel Arc result | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Civilization VI | 21.47 fps | 72.29 fps | A very large performance advantage for the Intel system in this test |
| Skyrim Special Edition | 29.8 fps | 59.4 fps | Roughly twice the frame rate on Intel Arc |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 20.69 fps | 35.83 fps | Neither result is ideal for demanding gaming, but Intel was faster |
| Dota 2 | 52.8 fps | Not specified in the cited comparison | Playable-looking average performance does not prove broad compatibility |
| Diablo II: Resurrected | 47.8 fps | Not specified in the cited comparison | One example of an older or better-supported game running reasonably |
| Final Fantasy XIV | 31.56 fps | Not specified in the cited comparison | Runs, but frame-time consistency and low-percentile performance matter too |
The Qualcomm system also failed to launch or became unstable in PCWorld’s testing with PUBG: Battlegrounds, Apex Legends, Diablo IV, Warframe, Valheim, and Counter-Strike 2. That list is especially important for buyers interested in online games: a laptop that is fast enough in a benchmark is not useful if the game or its anti-cheat component refuses to run.
These results should not be read as permanent ratings for those games. Game patches, Windows updates, drivers, anti-cheat updates, and Prism improvements can change the outcome. They do show why buying on GPU specifications alone is risky.
Why Windows games behave differently on Snapdragon
Snapdragon X Elite is built around Arm, while most Windows PC games were originally compiled for x86 processors. Windows on Arm uses Microsoft’s Prism technology to translate x86 and x64 instructions so that many traditional applications can run on Arm64 hardware.
That translation is valuable, but it does not turn every Windows game into a native Arm application. A game may still depend on components that are not compatible with Windows on Arm, including:
- Graphics APIs and drivers: Microsoft warns that games requiring unsupported OpenGL versions may not work.
- Anti-cheat drivers: Kernel-level or otherwise system-integrated anti-cheat components need their own Windows-on-Arm support. A translated game cannot simply translate an unsupported driver.
- Launchers and middleware: A launcher, updater, overlay, DRM module, or third-party engine component can fail even when the game itself is theoretically able to run.
- Instruction-set extensions: Some software expects x86 extensions that were not initially handled well by the translation layer.
- Frame-time behavior: A game may start and show a reasonable average frame rate while still suffering from stutter, weak one-percent lows, or inconsistent input response.
That is why the practical question is not simply whether the Snapdragon CPU is powerful. The question is whether the entire game stack—executable, launcher, graphics path, drivers, middleware, and anti-cheat—supports the machine.
Native Arm builds are the best-case scenario
A native Arm64 game does not need to translate its main x86 instructions. That can reduce overhead and improve the platform’s prospects. PCWorld’s 3DMark comparison illustrates the difference: Qualcomm performed much worse in the non-Arm-native Time Spy test, while the gap narrowed substantially in the Arm-native Night Strike test.
This does not mean an Arm-native synthetic benchmark predicts excellent gaming. It does mean that native software can materially change the result. The problem is that the mainstream Windows game catalog was not broadly native when the original testing was conducted.

What has improved since the original test
The original test should not be treated as the final state of Windows on Arm. Microsoft updated Prism in December 2025 to translate additional x86 instruction-set extensions, including AVX and AVX2 and related extensions such as BMI, FMA, and F16C. Microsoft said the update improved performance and allowed more applications and games to run under emulation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That is a meaningful improvement for software whose problem was missing or inefficient instruction support. It cannot fix every other failure mode. A game can still be blocked by an unsupported anti-cheat driver, an incompatible graphics API, a launcher problem, or a publisher that has not tested or supported Windows on Arm.
Anti-cheat support has also improved. Microsoft reported that Easy Anti-Cheat added Windows-on-Arm support through collaboration among Epic, Qualcomm, and Microsoft. Microsoft also identified BattlEye, Denuvo, and XIGNCODE3 as having Windows-on-Arm support. This weakens one of the strongest objections from the early Snapdragon laptops, but it is not a universal compatibility guarantee. Support depends on how each game implements and configures its anti-cheat system.
Independent follow-up testing, including a Tom’s Guide comparison after software updates, reported up to approximately 40% faster gameplay in selected tests. That is evidence of progress in particular workloads, not proof that the entire PC catalog is now safe to assume compatible.
Use the current software state to verify the exact game you care about. Microsoft describes Windows-on-Arm compatibility as an evolving area and points users toward WorksOnWoA and other current game-compatibility information. Check the publisher, storefront, WorksOnWoA, and recent community reports for the exact game build and anti-cheat configuration rather than relying on a general Snapdragon label.
The hardware is not the whole story
Snapdragon X Elite laptops use Qualcomm’s integrated Adreno GPU. Qualcomm’s product brief lists up to 4.6 TFLOPs for the highest X Elite configuration, while lower X Elite variants use lower GPU configurations. The chip family also includes a 12-core Oryon CPU and a 45-TOPS Hexagon NPU.
Those specifications can sound impressive, but TFLOPs are not a direct substitute for a discrete gaming GPU rating. They do not tell you whether a particular game will launch, whether its graphics API is supported, whether anti-cheat will load, or whether the laptop will deliver stable frame times. Even among Snapdragon X Elite laptops, cooling, memory configuration, display resolution, power limits, and GPU variant can affect performance.
The PCWorld test used the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 with Snapdragon X Elite X1E-80-100. Microsoft’s documentation confirms that the seventh-generation Surface Laptop was offered with a 12-core Snapdragon X Elite configuration. Other examples in this category include the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge and the ASUS Vivobook S 15 S5507, which ASUS lists with Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100, integrated Adreno graphics, and Windows 11.

Who should buy one—and who should not?
1. Serious local PC gamers: choose Intel or AMD
Do not make a Snapdragon X Elite laptop your main gaming PC if you regularly play Steam, Epic, Battle.net, or competitive multiplayer titles. The risk is not limited to lower frame rates. You may encounter a game that will not install correctly, a launcher that fails, an anti-cheat driver that is unsupported, or a title that starts but performs poorly.
For predictable local gaming, choose an x86 Windows laptop with a current Intel or AMD processor. If you play demanding AAA games, competitive shooters, or games with high-refresh-rate ambitions, prioritize a model with a suitable dedicated graphics processor, adequate cooling, and a display resolution that matches the GPU. A category-level recommendation is safer than naming a specific model without checking its current price, graphics chip, thermals, and availability.
An Intel or AMD gaming laptop is not automatically perfect, but it removes the Arm translation issue and generally offers the broadest compatibility with existing Windows game software.
2. Casual or lightweight gamers: buy only after checking the games
Snapdragon X Elite becomes more defensible when gaming is occasional and your library is narrow. Older games, lightweight competitive titles, and games with native Arm support may run acceptably. But verify each important title before purchase.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Write down the exact games you expect to play, including expansions and online modes.
- Check recent Windows-on-Arm reports for the current game build.
- Confirm whether the game uses anti-cheat, and whether that implementation supports Windows on Arm.
- Check the launcher, required graphics API, and any known issues—not only the game’s store listing.
- Look for reports on the exact laptop configuration, especially if it uses a lower X Elite variant or a high-resolution display.
- Buy from a retailer with a practical return window, because compatibility can change and community reports may conflict.
Do not infer compatibility from a related title. Diablo II: Resurrected running in the cited test does not establish that Diablo IV will run; PCWorld found the latter failed to launch or was unstable in its comparison. Likewise, a game running in single-player mode does not necessarily mean its online mode will pass anti-cheat checks.
3. Cloud-gaming users: Snapdragon can be a sensible fit
If you intend to stream games rather than install and execute them locally, many Arm compatibility problems become less important. Xbox Cloud Gaming supports Windows PCs and browsers, subject to the supported catalog, account and subscription requirements, region, and service availability.
Microsoft says most games require a compatible controller, while qualifying free-to-play games and eligible subscription titles may be available through the service. Microsoft recommends at least 20 Mbps for PCs and tablets, but your actual experience also depends on Wi-Fi quality, latency, network congestion, and your location relative to the service.
Cloud gaming is not the same as native PC gaming. You trade local rendering and offline access for a network connection, possible image-compression artifacts, queue or catalog restrictions, and latency. It is nevertheless a credible alternative for someone who wants a light, quiet Snapdragon laptop and does not need to run the game locally. A compatible Xbox controller is a practical part of that setup for most supported games.
Recommended Free Tools
Xbox Cloud Gaming or Game Pass should therefore be considered a cloud-gaming alternative, not evidence that Snapdragon X Elite has solved local Windows game compatibility.

| Symptom | Likely category | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The game starts but stutters or has low frame rates | Performance, translation overhead, power limit, or driver issue | Install Windows and OEM updates, use the latest game patch, reduce resolution and settings, and compare frame-time behavior rather than average fps alone |
| The game reports a missing or outdated driver | Routine driver maintenance | Use Windows Update or the laptop manufacturer’s official driver package first; restart and retest |
| The launcher opens but the game never starts | Launcher, DRM, middleware, or architecture compatibility | Check current Windows-on-Arm reports and the publisher’s support information before spending time on graphics settings |
| The game reports an anti-cheat or unsupported-driver error | Platform-level compatibility | Check whether that game’s exact anti-cheat implementation supports Windows on Arm; a normal driver update cannot add missing Arm support |
| The game requires an unsupported OpenGL version | Graphics API compatibility | Look for an officially supported rendering mode or updated build; otherwise treat the game as incompatible |
A driver-maintenance utility such as Outbyte Driver Updater may be relevant when a Windows installation genuinely has missing, outdated, or corrupted drivers. It cannot translate an unsupported game, repair an incompatible OpenGL path, or make an unsupported anti-cheat driver work on Arm. Official Windows and manufacturer drivers should remain the first troubleshooting path.
What not to conclude from the benchmarks
- Do not say Snapdragon X Elite laptops cannot game. Several games ran in the published test, and later Prism and anti-cheat updates improved the situation.
- Do not say every x86 game fails. Compatibility varies by title, launcher, graphics API, anti-cheat system, and software version.
- Do not treat 4.6 TFLOPs as equivalent to a discrete gaming GPU. It is the maximum figure Qualcomm lists for the highest X Elite configuration, not a universal performance rating for every model.
- Do not treat a Prism update as a catalog-wide fix. New instruction support helps selected applications and games; it does not guarantee graphics or anti-cheat compatibility.
- Do not use one successful game as proof of platform-wide support. The contrast between Diablo II: Resurrected running and Diablo IV failing in the same test is a useful reminder.
- Do not use a recorded-video streaming service as a gaming workaround. StreamNeo is designed to loop recorded video as a continuous YouTube live stream, not to interactively stream games to a laptop.
A pre-purchase decision checklist
Before ordering a Snapdragon X Elite laptop for any gaming use, answer these questions:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- What are the three to five games you will actually play most?
- Do those games run locally on Windows on Arm today, not merely on ordinary Windows x86?
- Does each game’s anti-cheat system support Windows on Arm?
- Are you comfortable with a game that might work after one update but break after another?
- Will you play at the laptop’s native display resolution, or are you willing to lower it?
- Do you need offline play, mods, overlays, or third-party launchers?
- Would cloud gaming satisfy your needs if local installation fails?
- Does the retailer offer a return period long enough to test your actual library?
If you cannot answer these questions confidently, the safer purchase is an x86 Windows laptop using Intel or AMD. If you can answer them and gaming is secondary, Snapdragon’s battery-life and portability advantages may outweigh the compatibility risk.
Sources and scope
The gaming comparison discussed above comes from PCWorld’s June 28, 2024 side-by-side testing of the Surface Laptop 7 and Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 2-in-1. Platform behavior is interpreted using Microsoft’s Windows-on-Arm and Prism compatibility guidance, Microsoft’s December 2025 Prism update, and Microsoft’s reported anti-cheat support progress. Qualcomm’s product brief supplies the X Elite CPU, NPU, and maximum integrated-GPU specifications. Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming guidance supplies the service requirements and recommended connection speed. Follow-up performance improvements are attributed to Tom’s Guide’s reported selected-test results rather than generalized to all games.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Snapdragon X Elite laptop run Steam games?
Some can run, but Steam compatibility is not a guarantee for every game in the store. Check each title’s current Windows-on-Arm status, launcher requirements, graphics API, and anti-cheat implementation. A game that launches may still have weak frame-time consistency or multiplayer restrictions.
Did the 2025 Prism update fix Snapdragon gaming compatibility?
No. Microsoft’s December 2025 update added translation support for AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, F16C, and related extensions, improving selected applications and games. It cannot fix every graphics, launcher, DRM, or anti-cheat problem, so game-by-game verification is still necessary.
Is Snapdragon X Elite faster than Intel Arc for gaming?
In PCWorld’s cited direct comparison, the Intel Arc laptop was faster and generally more consistent in every reported head-to-head game result. That does not establish a universal CPU or GPU ranking for every laptop, but it supports choosing Intel or AMD when predictable local gaming is the priority.
What is the best alternative to a Snapdragon X Elite laptop for PC gaming?
Choose an x86 Windows laptop with a current Intel or AMD processor. For demanding games, look for a suitable dedicated GPU and adequate cooling. The exact model should be selected using current pricing, graphics, thermals, display resolution, and availability rather than the processor name alone.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Snapdragon X Elite laptops are increasingly capable Windows-on-Arm productivity machines, but they remain a risky buy for broad local PC gaming. Choose Intel or AMD x86 hardware for a dependable game library; choose Snapdragon only when gaming is secondary, your specific titles are verified, or you plan to use cloud gaming.
