The headline “Tetris is 30 years old today” belongs to June 6, 2014: Alexey Pajitnov created the game in Moscow in June 1984. The Tetris Company marked its 40th anniversary on June 6, 2024, and reported more than 520 million units sold worldwide that year. Its January 2026 retrospective repeated that sales figure. Those are company-reported totals, not independently audited counts.

Who invented Tetris, and when?

Computer programmer Alexey Pajitnov developed Tetris in Moscow in June 1984. The Tetris Company says the first version ran on an Electronika 60. Inspired by the board puzzle Pentominos, Pajitnov turned the challenge of arranging shapes into a computer game: fit falling pieces into a rectangular playing field, called the Matrix, and clear complete rows. The company’s biography of Pajitnov and its timeline date the creation to 1984.

The game’s name combines “tetra,” Greek for four, and “tennis,” Pajitnov’s favorite sport, according to the official About Tetris page.

How does Tetris work?

The game uses seven geometric pieces, each made of four squares. Players move, rotate and drop the pieces into the Matrix. Completing a horizontal row makes it disappear, leaving more room for the pieces that follow. Pajitnov explained the original logic in a 2014 interview with Matt Peckham for TIME: “My thought process was pretty straightforward: drop the pieces down, and when a row was filled, remove it because there was no reason to keep it on the screen, and you needed more room to go.”

How did Tetris spread beyond Moscow?

From floppy disks to computer ports

The game first circulated informally. In the 2014 TIME interview, Pajitnov recalled friends copying it on floppy disks in the Soviet Union, where he said there were no computer stores selling programs. That informal sharing was distinct from the commercial releases that followed.

The Tetris Company timeline says the game was ported to IBM PC in 1985, then launched on PCs in North America and Europe in 1987. These milestones mark successive stages: the original version, ports to other computers and wider commercial distribution.

Henk Rogers and the Japanese releases

Entrepreneur Henk Rogers encountered Tetris at a Las Vegas trade show in 1988. In the TIME interview, he recalled repeatedly waiting for a turn to play and quickly becoming hooked. The Tetris Company’s timeline says Rogers’s company released the game on PC and Nintendo Famicom in Japan, where those releases sold more than two million copies, according to the company.

Separate handheld and console rights

In 1989, Rogers secured handheld rights and licensed them to Nintendo. The company timeline says Nintendo launched Game Boy with Tetris as its packed-in cartridge and reports that the Game Boy release sold more than 35 million copies. Rogers told TIME that he negotiated handheld rights in Moscow, then returned with Nintendo executives to secure console rights. The recollection distinguishes the handheld deal from the console licensing; the two should not be treated as a single rights arrangement.

In TIME’s interview, Rogers recalled pitching Nintendo of America CEO Minoru Arakawa: “If you want little boys to buy your machine include Mario, but if you want everyone to buy your machine, include Tetris.” That is Rogers’s recollection of the conversation, not an independently verified transcript.

Why did Tetris become so successful?

The game’s rules are easy to grasp, but each placement changes the space available for the next piece. That makes the basic action—fit a shape, clear a row—immediately legible while leaving players to make a continuing series of spatial and timing decisions. Its movement between computer platforms and, later, a handheld console also put the same recognizable puzzle in different play settings. Rogers’s Game Boy pitch captured the appeal he saw: Tetris could reach beyond the audience for a character-led game. That is his explanation of the pitch, not a measured account of why every player bought the hardware.

Who owns and licenses Tetris?

The Tetris Company says it was formed in 1996 and became the exclusive source for Tetris licenses. In its 2024 anniversary announcement, the company identified Tetris Holding, LLC as the owner of Tetris rights worldwide and The Tetris Company, Inc. as its exclusive licensee. The rights history involved earlier arrangements and negotiations, as described by Pajitnov and Rogers in TIME; these milestones do not by themselves capture every legal detail of those deals.

How many copies of Tetris have been sold?

The Tetris Company announced more than 520 million units sold worldwide in its June 6, 2024, 40th-anniversary release, then repeated the figure in its January 2026 retrospective. The company materials reviewed do not specify an independent audit or a consistent counting method, so the figure is best described as the company’s reported total.

Tetris (Renewed)
  • This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.

Other company figures measure different things and should not be added to that total:

  • Paid mobile downloads: The company timeline reports more than 100 million by 2010 and more than 425 million by 2014. These are historical paid-download figures, not the worldwide unit-sales total.
  • Games played: The company reported more than 20 billion Tetris Battle games played on Facebook by 2013. Plays are not copies sold.
  • Competition games: A January 2026 company retrospective says more than seven million games were played across the 2025 Red Bull Tetris competition in 60 countries. This is a 2025 event play count, not a sales figure.

What does Tetris look like today?

The franchise now includes more than standalone digital games. The Tetris Company’s January 2026 retrospective describes the 2025 Classic Tetris World Championship using the NES version, alongside experiences on Nintendo Switch 2 through Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, Netflix through Tetris Time Warp, and Amazon Luna through Tetris Effect: Connected Party Edition. These are examples reported by the company for its 2025 retrospective; platform and service availability can change.

The same retrospective describes licensed physical products: Tetris The Board Game for two to four players, a 676-piece Tetris Impossible Puzzle, and Rubik’s Cube Tetris, a Spin Master collaboration. It also names Henk Rogers’s 2025 book The Perfect Game: Tetris, From Russia with Love, and limited-edition playable Red Bull Tetris cans made by My Arcade. The report establishes that these products or collaborations were part of the company’s 2025 account, not that every item remains in production or available to buy.
