In May 2024, Tesla reportedly stopped including Steam gaming in new Model S and Model X vehicles. That announcement did not establish that Steam was removed from cars already delivered. At the time, existing owners did not appear to be affected, but that is not a guarantee about every vehicle today. Your car’s configuration, region and software version matter.
What Tesla’s reported notice said
On May 17, 2024, Electrek reproduced a customer notification about a new Model X: “Tesla is updating the gaming computer in your Model X and your vehicle is no longer capable of playing Steam games. All other entertainment and app functionalities are unaffected.” The reporting described the change as applying to new Model S and Model X vehicles, rather than all Teslas.
Not a Tesla App reported the same change on May 20, 2024. The notice was reported through customer communications; it was not a public Tesla press release explaining a company-wide policy.
Does your Tesla still play Steam games?
The May 2024 reports said existing owners did not appear to be affected then. They do not establish that every previously delivered car can still play Steam today, or that every new Model S or Model X has the same feature status. Tesla says software updates roll out over time and feature availability can vary by vehicle configuration, region and software version.

- In your car, open the Software screen to see its installed software version and available updates.
- Open the vehicle’s Release Notes to review features and changes for that car.
- Check whether Steam is available on your vehicle rather than relying on another car’s model year or a historical compatibility report.
Tesla’s software updates guidance explains rollout timing and availability differences. A third-party transcription of Tesla software version 2024.45.32 release notes reported a Steam Beta update to SteamOS 3.6 for 2021-and-newer Model S and Model X. That is evidence of a historical update for the listed vehicles, not a current support guarantee.
What is—and is not—known about the change
What the reports establish
- The reported removal concerned Steam gaming in new Model S and Model X vehicles in May 2024.
- The quoted customer notice said other entertainment and app functions would remain unaffected.
- The reports did not say that Steam had been remotely removed from vehicles already delivered.
What has not been confirmed
Tesla did not provide a confirmed reason in the reviewed reporting. Claims that the change was caused by a particular RAM or GPU configuration, cost decision, or future support plan remain unconfirmed. The sources also do not establish a Tesla-approved retrofit or a plan to add Steam to other models.

Not a Tesla App discussed memory and graphics configurations in its coverage, but those observations do not amount to a current Tesla compatibility specification or an official explanation for the change.
Steam’s history in Tesla vehicles
Tesla introduced Steam Beta on Model S and Model X in late 2022, according to contemporaneous reporting. Later, the transcription of the 2024.45.32 release notes recorded a SteamOS 3.6 update for listed 2021-and-newer Model S and Model X vehicles. These records show that Steam support existed and was updated for some cars; they should not be read as a promise that it remains available on a particular vehicle now.

Can a Steam Deck replace Tesla’s built-in Steam?
A Steam Deck is a separate handheld device that runs SteamOS. It lets you play compatible Steam games on the handheld, but it is not a Tesla accessory, retrofit, or way to restore built-in Steam on a car that does not support it. Valve’s specifications describe the Steam Deck itself, not compatibility with Tesla vehicles.
