Its playable classics, archival material and interviews make it an appealing way to explore how the series evolved; players mainly seeking contemporary Tetris action may find the selection limited.
What is Tetris Forever?
Developed by Digital Eclipse, Tetris Forever combines playable classic games with an interactive history of the franchise. Digital Eclipse lists more than 15 playable classics and over 90 minutes of documentary footage about Alexey Pajitnov and Henk Rogers. The documentary is a substantial part of the appeal: Nintendo Life’s European Switch review describes five timelines bringing together interviews, images, documents and archival material. The result gives context to the games rather than presenting them as an unexplained list of versions. Nintendo Life’s review
How does it play, and what is included?
A curated selection, not a complete history
The collection spans different eras and includes unusual entries such as Tetris Battle Gaiden, Super Bombliss and a recreation of the 1984 Electronika 60 version. Nintendo Life counted 18 playable games in its November 11, 2024 review of the European Switch version. That breadth is still selective. Nintendo Life noted that the playable set represents only a fraction of the franchise’s catalogue and largely skips titles from the 2000s onward. The timeline can discuss important games without making every one playable, so the package works better as a guided history than as a comprehensive library or a sampler of every style of Tetris.
Tetris Time Warp
The new Tetris Time Warp mode shifts players among historical styles in real time. Digital Eclipse says it supports up to four players; Nintendo Life also describes additional formats and multiplayer features. It is the collection’s clearest attempt to turn its historical theme into a new way to play, rather than leaving the archive as a set of separate classics.

Is Tetris Forever worth playing if you already know Tetris?
It can be, if you are curious about the series’ origins, variations and the people behind it. The documentary and curated timelines offer context that a familiar block-stacking session does not, while the less familiar games show how developers reworked the core idea across different periods. The package’s strongest distinction is this historical framing, not an unusually broad modern competitive feature set.
If you mainly want current arcade or competitive Tetris, the narrower playable selection and limited coverage of more recent entries may make it a less satisfying fit. Nintendo Life’s review praised the historical storytelling, archival material, documentary and Time Warp, while identifying the lack of more modern franchise entries as a downside. Its other noted drawback was minor errors in some control guides; it also observed that default controls vary between included games. Those comments apply to the European Switch version reviewed in November 2024, not necessarily later builds.

What did critics think?
Nintendo Life scored the European Switch version 8/10 in its November 11, 2024 review. Separately, Metacritic’s Switch critic page displayed an 85 Metascore from 11 reviews when viewed in 2026: 10 positive, one mixed and none negative. Updates and release details
Digital Eclipse’s December 20, 2024 update announced Welltris, remappable controls and a fix for audio stuttering affecting some Switch games. The post also said saved-game functionality across classic titles was still being addressed at that time. That dated note does not establish whether the issue persists in current versions, so check the update history for your platform if a particular fix matters to you. Digital Eclipse’s update notes

The official Tetris product page gives November 28, 2024 as the release date, while Steam lists November 12, 2024 for the PC release. Digital Eclipse lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and says the game is available digitally and physically. The documentary’s focus on Pajitnov and Rogers reflects their central roles in the game’s creation and international spread. In a 2014 TIME interview, Rogers recalled, “When I found myself standing in line for the fourth time … I realized I was hooked on the game in a very basic way.” The interview recounts the game’s beginnings on the Electronika 60, its early circulation by floppy disk, and Rogers’s dealings with Nintendo; it is useful context, though it predates this collection by a decade.
