This list is an editorial selection informed by those distinct perspectives, with an emphasis on standout recognition, varied play styles and practical fit. Use it to find a game you might enjoy—not as a universal verdict.
How to read this list
GameSpot says its staff votes and then discusses the results; the Associated Press publishes an individual ranked selection; Metacritic organizes games by Metascore; Acclaimed Video Games aggregates critic recommendations across lists. Those methods offer useful but different kinds of evidence, not interchangeable measurements of quality. The titles below are arranged as a practical shortlist, not a claim that every player—or every publication—would rank them in this order. GameSpot’s 10 best games of 2025, the AP’s top 10, Metacritic’s 2025 Metascore browse and Acclaimed Video Games’ 2025 aggregate are reference points, each with its own approach and scope.
10 standout games of 2025
1. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Best for: players who want a story-led role-playing game with turn-based combat. Sandfall Interactive’s debut draws on classic turn-based RPGs. The AP ranked it first, and Acclaimed Video Games also places it first in its 2025 aggregate—strong support across two distinct editorial approaches, not proof of a universal consensus. AP games writer Lou Kesten called its arrival “one marvelous game that left many of us slack-jawed with wonder.”
2. Blue Prince
Best for: players drawn to strategy-puzzle adventures. Metacritic’s 2025 release-year browse lists it with a 92 Metascore. That score is one useful signal; the game’s puzzle-focused design may matter more to your choice than its position on a score-based page.

What to check before buying
- Platform: a game’s year-end recognition does not mean it is available on your console. Check the current store listing for your exact system.
- Edition and format: make sure the listing is for the intended game, edition and platform before ordering a physical copy or digital version.
- Play style: co-op recommendations such as Split Fiction work best when you want to play with someone; solo-focused games suit a different plan.
- Ranking context: a critic score, staff vote, personal list and critic-list aggregate answer different questions. Treat rankings as ways to discover games, then judge fit by genre and availability.
Year-end eligibility can also differ: GameSpot says its list may include late-December releases from the previous year and live-service updates. For any specific ranking, check its stated cutoff and rules rather than assuming all lists cover the same field.
