If Call of Duty voice chat is not working, first check the game’s Voice Chat setting, volume, chat audience and player or lobby mutes. Then test whether your platform detects the microphone and check platform communication restrictions. If the game displayed a voice-chat penalty notice, the mute may be moderation-related rather than a hardware fault.
Menu names vary by Call of Duty release and platform. The steps below use Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 as a current example; look for equivalent controls in your game.
Start with the symptom: who can hear whom?
The direction of the failure helps narrow down which setting to check first. These are troubleshooting clues, not definitive diagnoses.
- You can hear others, but they cannot hear you: Check the microphone’s physical mute, the selected platform input and the platform’s microphone test. Then review Call of Duty’s voice-chat enablement and platform communication settings.
- Others can hear you, but you cannot hear them: Check Voice Chat Volume, whether your headset or system output is muted, and whether the game is allowing you to hear that player or channel.
- Neither direction works: Check that voice chat is enabled, then review your chat audience, mutes and platform communication restrictions.
- Only certain players or modes are affected: Check whether you selected a restricted audience, muted those players, or are in a match where ordinary chat is limited to teammates.

Check the in-game voice settings
Enable chat and raise its volume
In Black Ops 7, open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat. Confirm that Voice Chat is enabled and raise Voice Chat Volume enough to hear other players. Other Call of Duty games may place these options in different menus.
Choose an audience that includes your teammates
Under Game Chat Voice, Black Ops 7 offers All Lobby, Party Only, Friends Only, and Friends & Chat Channels. Choose the audience that includes the people you are trying to reach. Activision says these audience options require Game Voice Chat to be set to All Lobby; a narrower audience can explain why only some players are audible or able to hear you.
Check player and lobby mutes
Look for a muted-player indicator in the lobby or scoreboard and unmute anyone you want to hear. The game also provides lobby voice controls in the lobby menu. In Black Ops 7, temporarily muting a player also prevents that player from hearing you.

Make sure the match supports the chat you expect
Activision says players can communicate in the pre-game lobby when Voice Chat is enabled. In team-based matches, players can typically hear or speak only to teammates, with some exceptions. A teammate-only match is not necessarily evidence that your microphone has failed.

Proximity Chat, Body Shield Chat and Last Words Voice Chat are separate settings for supported modes. They govern specific situations, so do not use their behavior as a test of ordinary team chat.
Test the microphone and platform settings
Check the physical mic and platform input
Make sure the headset microphone is connected, selected as the input device and not muted on the headset or controller. Then use your platform’s microphone test. If the platform cannot detect your voice, focus on the headset, connection or system input settings before changing Call of Duty’s audience controls.

For PS4 and PS5, PlayStation’s voice chat troubleshooting guide directs players to Settings > Sound > Microphone for input configuration and advises checking that a wireless headset microphone is not muted. Xbox and Windows use their own system menus; follow the microphone test and communication settings for your platform rather than applying the PlayStation path.
Review account communication restrictions
Passing a platform microphone test does not guarantee that the account can use in-game voice chat. Activision cautions that platform account settings may override some in-game communication choices. Check the account’s communication or privacy restrictions as well as the game settings. The exact controls depend on platform and account.
Check for a moderation mute
If Call of Duty displayed a voice-chat penalty notice, Activision says the notice means voice chat has been muted because the system detected language that violates its Code of Conduct. In that case, a working microphone may still be unable to send chat. Activision’s Voice Chat Moderation FAQ explains the moderation system, and the support portal includes a “My Voice Chat has been muted” issue category.

Investigate connection problems only when symptoms point there
If voice chat is the only feature failing, start with voice controls, microphone input, mutes and account restrictions. If you also cannot connect or other online features are failing, check game and platform service status, then move on to connection troubleshooting.
Activision’s Black Ops connection guide recommends wired Ethernet for online gameplay. Its NAT FAQ discusses NAT types and port forwarding; these are later connectivity checks, not the first response to a microphone-only symptom. Activision also publishes a list of ports used for Call of Duty games for connection troubleshooting.
When a headset replacement makes sense
Consider replacing or repairing a headset only if the platform-level microphone test fails after you have checked mute and input settings, or you already know the headset is faulty. A new headset will not fix a disabled game setting, an audience mismatch, a platform account restriction, a moderation mute or a service interruption.
