There is no objective answer to “What are the scariest games of all time?” A jump scare, a relentless pursuer, or the dread of being powerless can unsettle different players in different ways. This editorial selection weighs atmosphere and sound, sudden scares, helplessness and scarce resources, psychological dread, and the sense of presence created by first-person play. The order is not a universal ranking; it is a guide to ten games whose horror works in distinct ways.

10 games that make horror work in different ways

  1. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Its first-person perspective places you inside an isolated Louisiana setting, where suspense and a sense of helplessness make even the opening stretch unnerving. It is a strong pick if close-up immersion and sustained tension scare you more than distant, cinematic horror. GLITCHED ranks it highly, while Den of Geek highlights its setting and opening.

  2. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

This game’s haunted imagery and ghost photography make looking directly at a threat part of the horror. Its atmosphere is built around dread rather than simply the shock of an unexpected attack. Game Informer writer Joe Juba described his own reaction plainly: “I couldn’t finish it because it just freaked me out too much.” That is one player’s experience, not a universal verdict. GLITCHED places it first on its list, and Game Informer discusses its atmosphere and photography.

  3. Outlast

Outlast puts pressure on the player through scarcity and vulnerability: when danger appears, hiding or running can matter more than fighting back. Its jump scares add sudden jolts to longer tense sequences. Choose it if you find being hunted more frightening than having the tools to take on a threat. Den of Geek describes its hide-or-run structure and resource scarcity; GLITCHED points to its jump scares.

  4. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia makes helplessness central to its horror. Rather than framing encounters as fights to win, it emphasizes the fear of facing threats without the power to overcome them directly. That makes it a useful choice for players who find vulnerability more disturbing than combat. GLITCHED highlights that helplessness.

  5. Alien: Isolation

The alien is frightening not only when it is nearby, but because it can vanish and return. That uncertainty keeps tension alive between encounters: safety never feels secure for long. If an unpredictable, persistent pursuer is your most effective horror trigger, this is one of the clearest matches on the list. Den of Geek and Adventure Gamers both emphasize the threat’s role in creating anxiety.

  6. Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3

These entries show two ways the series can frighten. Game Informer writer Andrew Reiner recalled the original Silent Hill changing his sense of what horror games could do after a dog suddenly came through a window. That personal memory illustrates the power of a well-timed shock, not a predictable reaction for every player. Den of Geek makes a separate case for Silent Hill 3, citing its psychological focus and jump scares. The choice between them depends on whether you want the original’s remembered opening jolt or the third game’s blend of psychological unease and sudden scares.

  7. Dead Space

Dead Space brings survival horror into science fiction, using grotesque monsters and gore to make its threats physically disturbing. Its appeal is direct: choose it if creature design and graphic horror unsettle you more than unseen or existential dangers. GLITCHED and Adventure Gamers both describe it as sci-fi survival horror, with Adventure Gamers emphasizing its monsters and gore.

  8. SOMA

SOMA is a choice for dread that lingers beyond a scare or chase. Den of Geek distinguishes its existential hopelessness from more conventional visual shocks and jump scares. If you want horror that unsettles through ideas and atmosphere rather than relying mainly on sudden frights, its approach may be especially effective.

  9. P.T.

P.T. is a playable teaser, not a conventional full-length game, but its short form does not prevent it from delivering potent scares. Its place here is for the concentrated horror experience and the impact later writers attribute to it—not for a full campaign. GLITCHED describes its scares and later influence, while Den of Geek treats its horror impact as exceptional.

  10. Resident Evil (2002 remake)

This entry refers specifically to the 2002 remake, not the original Resident Evil or the series generally. Its fixed-camera presentation, claustrophobic spaces, and Crimson Heads combine visual uncertainty with the risk of an enemy returning in a more dangerous form. Den of Geek identifies those qualities as sources of its scares.

Why there is no definitive scariest game

Lists by GLITCHED, Den of Geek, Game Informer, and Adventure Gamers overlap on several titles, including Resident Evil 7, Outlast, Alien: Isolation, Fatal Frame II, and Silent Hill entries. But they differ in scope and judgment: some emphasize personal reactions, some a particular kind of horror, and some a specific version or experience. Their rankings are editorial choices, not measurements of how frightened players will feel. A game that works through pursuit may be unbearable to one person and less effective for another who responds more strongly to psychological or visual horror.

Does VR make a horror game scarier?

VR can intensify horror by increasing the sense of presence, but that does not make it a guaranteed best choice for every player. A 2026 feature from VR.org ranks the PSVR version of Resident Evil 7 first among its VR horror picks. That is a VR-specific editorial ranking, not evidence that it will be the scariest game for everyone. Check that the game and headset are compatible in your market before choosing a VR version.
