This is an editorial ranking, not a universal scorecard. It weighs each series’ influence on game design, the number and quality of landmark entries released in the 1980s and ’90s, its innovations for the hardware and conventions of the time, and its lasting recognition. The order would change if cultural reach, gameplay craft, or historical influence counted most.
The 1983 North American video-game crash was a regional market crisis, not the end of gaming worldwide. HISTORY’s overview points to an oversaturated console market and competition from computer gaming among its causes, while the decades that followed brought enduring franchises and new hardware. HISTORY’s account of the 1983 crash offers context for that transition.
Eligibility here means a series began, or established its defining early run, in the 1980s or ’90s. The ranking focuses on those decades; later recognition matters only as evidence of staying power. Release dates below are historical milestones, while the positions are judgments.
12. Metroid
Metroid made exploration and discovery central to an action-adventure series. Nintendo’s company history places it among the NES-era games that helped define the company’s developing identity. Nintendo’s corporate history provides the broader timeline.

Its design influence comes from a world that rewards returning to earlier areas with new abilities, rather than simply moving through a sequence of isolated stages. That structure gives exploration a mechanical purpose and helped establish a durable template. It ranks lower here because the case rests more on the strength of its design legacy than on a large run of ’80s and ’90s landmark releases.
11. Castlevania
Konami dates the original Castlevania to 1986 and records a steady run of entries through the 1990s. Konami’s official series history lists the franchise’s releases and platforms.
The series began as a challenging action platformer built around staged combat and precise movement. Its 1997 entry, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, shifted toward a broad, interconnected castle, giving exploration and character progression a larger role. That installment is a high point, but the franchise’s place at 11 reflects a ranking of the whole period’s output and influence, not a judgment that every entry was equally significant.
10. Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in 1991, with its initial North American release on Sega Genesis. Sega highlights speed-focused action and the Ring system as features of its appeal. Sega’s company timeline distinguishes the North American Genesis launch from Japan’s timing and describes the series’ early reception.

Its emphasis on momentum and fast traversal made the games feel different, though high speed could also make careful navigation harder. Sega’s timeline says the first game sold more than 4 million copies, and associates the 1991 release with Genesis sales of more than 15 million units in North America and 8 million in Europe. These are company-published figures, not independent sales verification.
9. Pokémon
Pokémon arrived near the end of the period: Nintendo dates the series’ Japanese release to 1996. Nintendo’s timeline records its debut alongside other major changes in the company’s history.
The original games built a collection-and-trading loop around the idea that one player could not easily complete the set alone. That made the social exchange part of the play rather than an optional extra. Pokémon ranks ninth because its arrival in the ’90s established a major series, but its strongest long-term impact unfolded beyond the decade this list emphasizes.
8. Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong began as an arcade game in the early 1980s and became a foundation for a series with a notable reinvention late in the decade range. Nintendo’s history dates Donkey Kong Country to 1994. Nintendo’s corporate timeline places that release among the company’s major ’90s milestones.

The original arcade game helped establish character-driven, goal-based action, while Donkey Kong Country demonstrated how a familiar property could be reshaped for a new generation of home hardware. Its position reflects that range and reinvention, balanced against a less consistent run of defining series entries across both decades.

7. Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy began in Japan in 1987 and became one of the defining role-playing game series of its era. Across the late ’80s and ’90s, its numbered entries repeatedly reworked the setting, characters, and systems rather than continuing one single story.
That willingness to reinvent gave the series room to experiment with party-based combat, elaborate worlds, and cinematic presentation as home consoles evolved. It earns seventh place for the strength of its era-spanning run and its role in expanding the ambitions of console RPGs. Its exact position is debatable: a ranking that prioritizes genre influence over cultural reach could place it higher.
6. Street Fighter
Street Fighter became a defining fighting-game franchise with Street Fighter II, released in arcades in 1991. Its character-specific moves, readable matchups, and competitive focus helped make head-to-head fighting games a lasting genre rather than a passing arcade trend.

It ranks sixth because its genre-defining impact is enormous, though its contribution is concentrated in one genre and its landmark ’90s run.
5. The Legend of Zelda
Nintendo’s company history identifies The Legend of Zelda as part of the NES-era development that helped establish the company’s major series. The original game’s open-ended exploration, item-based progression, and puzzle-filled dungeons gave players a world to investigate rather than a simple sequence of stages. Nintendo’s timeline documents the franchise’s place in that era.
By combining action, navigation, and problem-solving, Zelda helped define what an adventure game could be on a home console. Its place in the top five comes from the strength of that foundation and the series’ ability to evolve across the ’80s and ’90s, including the transition to three-dimensional play in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in 1998.
4. Mega Man
Mega Man built a distinctive action-platforming formula around challenging stages, selectable bosses, and the ability to acquire defeated opponents’ weapons. That structure gave players meaningful choices about the order in which to tackle levels, while boss weaknesses encouraged experimentation.
The series’ many entries across the period made it one of the most recognizable action franchises of its generation. It ranks fourth for the consistency of its core idea, its influence on action-game design, and how readily each installment could add a new twist without abandoning the central loop.

Super Mario Bros. became a hit around the world after its NES-era release, according to Nintendo’s company history. Nintendo’s timeline places it among the company’s defining early series and later records Super Mario 64 as a 1996 Nintendo 64 launch title.

Mario’s case rests on the way its games made movement itself satisfying: running, jumping, and reading a level’s layout became a complete design language. The series adapted that language to new hardware, with Super Mario 64 translating platforming into a three-dimensional space. Nintendo says more than 500,000 Nintendo 64 systems sold on launch day in Japan in 1996; that figure is specific to Japan and the launch day, not a worldwide or ongoing sales total.
2. Doom
Doom helped establish the first-person shooter as a major PC game genre after its 1993 release. Its fast movement, maze-like levels, arsenal, and networked multiplayer made it a landmark not just for combat but for how players shared and modified games.
The franchise’s period impact is unusually broad: it influenced game design, helped popularize multiplayer play, and became closely associated with PC gaming culture. It sits at number two because that influence was transformative, while its series output during the two decades was narrower than the longer-running franchises ranked above it.
1. The Legend of Zelda
The Legend of Zelda takes the top spot for the balance of enduring design influence, landmark entries, and successful adaptation as games changed. Its early adventures made exploration, puzzle-solving, and progression through a connected world central to console gaming; Ocarina of Time then carried those ideas into three dimensions in 1998.
This is an editorial choice, not a claim that Zelda is objectively superior to Mario, Doom, or any other series. A ranking based primarily on worldwide reach might put Mario first; one focused on genre impact could favor Doom or a fighting-game series. Zelda wins here because its defining design ideas remained legible through major changes in hardware and presentation.
Where the ranking is most debatable
These positions depend on how influence is weighed against the quality and number of era-specific games. A series with one genre-defining release can outrank a franchise with more entries if its design changed what followed; a longer run can rise when consistency matters more. The dates and milestones above are historical claims, while the ordering is the judgment applied to them.
How to play these series now
Modern collections can make older entries easier to access, but availability varies by platform, region, and time. Konami lists Castlevania Anniversary Collection for PlayStation 4, Steam, Xbox One, Epic, and Nintendo Switch on its official series history page. Check the store and edition for your region before buying; the listed platforms do not establish current stock or a particular physical release.
For historical context beyond the games, Rowman & Littlefield’s 2017 book 100 Greatest Video Game Franchises includes franchise entries, references, and an index, according to the publisher’s material: publisher information for the book. Its listing establishes the book’s bibliographic details and contents, not current retailer availability.
