BGR reported on December 2, 2019, that a photograph circulating on Twitter showed two PlayStation 5 development kits. The report described an unusual inverted-V-shaped chassis, but it did not establish direct Sony authentication or prove that the retail PS5 would look the same. “Use right now” was part of a 2019 headline, not a current claim.
What did the 2019 report say the image showed?
BGR’s December 2, 2019 report, by Chris Smith, attributed the photograph to a Twitter post by The Drunk Cat (@Alcoholikaust), said to have appeared a few days earlier. BGR described two identical units side by side, with an inverted-V chassis, an apparent disc opening and several USB ports. The scene also reportedly included controllers and a Sony manual.

Those are BGR’s descriptions of the photograph, not findings from a physical inspection. The article did not provide direct Sony authentication or establish a complete chain of custody for the image, so the careful description is that the photograph was reported to show PS5 development hardware.
Was it really the first leaked image?
The headline’s “first” is BGR’s characterization of the image at the time. The available report identifies the photograph’s claimed social-media source, but does not document enough provenance or independent verification to establish that it was definitively the first authentic image of a PS5 development kit. It is safest to refer to it as a photograph BGR reported in December 2019, rather than make a stronger claim about its priority or authenticity.

Does the developer kit show what the retail PS5 looks like?
No. BGR explicitly cautioned that the development unit’s form did not establish the commercial console’s appearance, noting that dev kits are built for development. The report quoted Robert Petersen (@Sonikku_a2), who wrote on November 30, 2019: “Dev kits don’t always resemble the final shipping product, it’s worth noting.” BGR also said the units resembled Sony patent drawings, but that comparison—and a patent-based render credited to LetsGoDigital elsewhere in the article—does not authenticate the photograph or make the dev-kit design a retail design.
What can’t the photograph establish?
An exterior image, even if authentic, cannot by itself verify what is inside the units or establish performance, specifications, launch timing or pricing. The BGR report described visible features; it did not document those other claims.
