There is no universally agreed list of the 40 best games ever made. This ranking is an editorial selection: it weighs historical influence, innovation, craft, critical reception, cultural reach and how rewarding a game remains to play. The order is a judgment, not a measurement—and a game’s place here does not mean it is the best choice for every player.

To compare games from different eras and genres, this list considers what each game achieved in its own context as well as what it offers now. It favors lasting significance and distinctive play over review scores alone. The entries name the original game, not necessarily the easiest or best version to buy today; remasters, ports and platform availability can differ.

How to read this ranking

“Best” can mean several different things: the most influential, the most polished, the most beloved, or the most enjoyable to play today. No single list can settle all of those questions. Here, influence and innovation matter, but they do not automatically outrank moment-to-moment quality or lasting playability. The ranking also makes room for different genres, generations and kinds of play rather than treating one style as the default.

Other published rankings illustrate why results differ. GamesRadar+ describes a hybrid process for its list: experts shortlist the top 20, Golden Joystick viewers vote on those, and its editorial team selects the rest. Its ranking puts Dark Souls first, Doom second and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild third. Acclaimed Video Games aggregates appearances across lists and displays Breath of the Wild first and Tetris second. British GQ’s list, dated 22 July 2026, draws on contributions from people across the games industry and beyond. Metacritic’s all-time page instead orders games by review score. These approaches answer different questions; an aggregate position or Metascore is not a direct measure of cultural impact or enduring playability.

#1 Best Overall
Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This list generally gives a series one place where possible, while recognizing that a sequel or a move between 2D and 3D can represent a genuinely different achievement. The numbered order is therefore best read as a guided selection, not a claim that the gap between adjacent games can be measured precisely.

The 40 best games of all time

  1. Tetris

A brilliant puzzle game can outlast hardware generations, visual fashions and the conventions of its era. Tetris distills play to an instantly understood problem—fit falling shapes into a clearing field—then makes each decision matter more as the pace rises. Its rules are simple to explain but difficult to master, and its many historical versions show how naturally the idea travels between platforms. Acclaimed Video Games places it second in its multi-list aggregate; that is one useful sign of its broad recognition, not a universal verdict.

  2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo EPD’s 2017 open-world adventure makes exploration feel like a chain of experiments. Players can approach obstacles in different ways, combine systems and follow curiosity rather than a rigid route. That flexibility is a major part of its influence and its lasting appeal. GamesRadar+ ranks it third, while Acclaimed Video Games’ aggregate places it first; the difference neatly shows how editorial judgment and list aggregation produce distinct orders. The game appeared on Wii U and Switch, so check the platform edition before buying.

  3. Dark Souls

Dark Souls turned demanding combat, interconnected spaces and cryptic worldbuilding into a remarkably coherent whole. Its difficulty is not simply a high barrier: enemies, shortcuts and environmental clues teach players to observe, adapt and take responsibility for each decision. The structure rewards careful exploration, while its indirect storytelling invites interpretation. GamesRadar+ places it first on its list, a position that reflects the title’s influence and legacy as well as its craft.

  4. Doom

The original Doom established a fast, forceful model for first-person action that helped define a genre. Its labyrinthine levels, enemy encounters and emphasis on movement gave players a clear role: navigate, react and keep moving. Its importance is historical, but its appeal is not only archival; the directness of its design remains easy to understand. GamesRadar+ ranks it second, an example of how an older game can remain central to discussions of the medium.

  5. Super Mario 64

Moving a platform game into three dimensions required more than adding depth to familiar jumps. Super Mario 64 made movement itself a source of pleasure, giving players space to run, leap and experiment while using goals to guide exploration. Its camera and controls are products of their time, but its design helped establish how a 3D platform game could feel. Its enduring significance comes from both the problems it solved and the lively playground it created.

  6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Ocarina of Time brought adventure, combat, puzzle-solving and a memorable sense of place together in a 3D world. Its targeting system helped make fights legible in a space where enemies could surround the player, while its journey through time gives the story and setting a strong structure. Its influence is inseparable from its era: later games refined many of its ideas, but the original remains a landmark in adapting an established series to a new dimension.

  7. Super Metroid

Super Metroid makes a sprawling world feel like a puzzle whose pieces gradually come into view. New abilities open old routes, environmental details hint at secrets and the player’s growing mastery becomes the story’s momentum. The result helped shape a lasting approach to exploration-based action games. Its restraint is part of its strength: the world does not need constant explanation when its layout and mechanics teach players how to read it.

  8. Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2 integrates action, environmental storytelling and physical interaction into a continuous journey. Its use of physics is not just a novelty; it gives players tools for solving problems and makes the world feel responsive. Carefully staged encounters keep the story moving without relying on frequent interruptions. Its design helped set expectations for cinematic first-person games, while its best sequences still work because they ask the player to act rather than merely watch.

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  9. Minecraft

Minecraft is both a game about gathering and building and a platform for player-created goals. Its block-based world makes construction understandable at a glance, while survival, exploration and creative play support very different kinds of sessions. Few games give players such broad permission to set their own objectives. That openness helps explain its cultural reach and continuing life across generations of players; its value depends less on a single authored path than on what people make possible within its rules.

  10. Street Fighter II

Street Fighter II helped turn the fighting game into a competitive conversation between players. Its roster gave matches distinct rhythms, and the special moves rewarded practice without hiding the basic premise: learn a character, read an opponent and make better decisions under pressure. The game’s influence reaches beyond its own series, shaping how players understand arcade competition and character-based combat. Its lasting importance lies in a durable structure that makes skill visible and rivalry immediate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  11. Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. is an exemplary lesson in teaching through level design. It introduces movement and hazards in small steps, then recombines them so that players learn by doing. The responsive controls and clear visual language make its challenge feel fair, even when success demands timing and repetition. Its historical importance is immense, but the game earns its place through the precision of the play itself, not merely because it helped establish a genre’s conventions.

  12. Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger combines a time-spanning role-playing adventure with a pace and structure that keep its journey moving. Its party members, battle system and multiple outcomes make the world feel larger than a single route, while its time-travel premise gives the plot a natural way to connect different eras. Rather than relying only on scale, it uses a compact, memorable cast and a strong sense of momentum. Its influence is difficult to separate from its reputation as one of the genre’s most consistently rewarding adventures.

  13. Portal 2

Portal 2 builds a full adventure around a puzzle mechanic that is easy to grasp and rich in consequences. A portal changes how players think about distance, momentum and space; each chamber tests that understanding in a new arrangement. Humor and character give the puzzles a distinctive voice without diluting their logic. The game’s craft is especially clear in how it introduces tools, raises complexity and makes the solution feel earned rather than arbitrary.

  14. Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy turns gravity and scale into the central pleasures of a platform game. Small planetoids make familiar jumps feel novel, and the varied stages keep the central idea from becoming a one-note trick. Its visual imagination supports precise play rather than replacing it. The result is an inventive entry in a long-running series and a reminder that familiar mechanics can feel new when their spatial rules are reconsidered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  15. Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII brought a sprawling role-playing story, striking presentation and a distinctive cast to a broad audience. Its mix of turn-based battles, character progression and cinematic storytelling made a long adventure feel accessible while preserving room for strategy. Its cultural reach is part of its legacy, but its emotional and mechanical contrasts also give it staying power. The original release and later versions are not identical products, so readers seeking to play it should verify which edition they are considering.

  16. Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 reshaped action-horror around a close camera, deliberate aiming and pressure from enemies approaching from multiple directions. Its encounters combine resource management with immediate combat decisions, keeping tension alive even when the player is armed. The shift in perspective and pacing influenced many later action games. The original, its remakes and later ports are distinct versions; this entry refers to the game’s underlying design achievement rather than declaring one edition the best way to play today.

  17. Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2 makes assembling a crew the spine of its science-fiction role-playing adventure. Companions are more than combat options: their histories and personal missions give the central journey emotional stakes. The streamlined combat and mission structure keep the plot moving, while player choices make the larger series feel responsive. Its strongest achievement is the way character investment and mission progression reinforce each other, creating a team story that remains memorable even outside the trilogy’s broader arc.

    • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  18. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a deliberately paced open-world western whose setting rewards attention. The world’s detail supports a story about loyalty, change and the consequences of a life built around violence. Its slower rhythms will not suit every player, but they give travel, camp life and small encounters unusual weight. The game’s ambition is not just geographic scale: it is the effort to make the player inhabit a particular place and a group of people whose world is ending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  19. The Last of Us

The Last of Us puts character and survival at the center of a linear action adventure. Its stealth and resource scarcity make encounters feel costly, while the relationship between its protagonists supplies the emotional through-line. Its influence is visible in the way later games approached cinematic performance and narrative pacing. The original game and subsequent remastered or remade editions should not be treated as interchangeable when choosing a version; platform and edition availability can vary.

  20. Super Mario World

Super Mario World expands the side-scrolling platform formula with a generous map, hidden paths and a companion whose abilities change how levels can be approached. Its controls are immediately readable, but the world rewards players who return to search for exits and secrets. It balances a clear main route with optional discoveries, a design that makes it approachable without exhausting its possibilities quickly. Its polish and quiet inventiveness have helped it remain a touchstone for the genre.

  21. Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid made stealth the defining activity of a cinematic action game. Avoiding detection, studying patrols and using the environment give players alternatives to direct confrontation. Its presentation and twists pushed the boundaries of how a console game could tell a story, even as its mechanics supplied the tension that made the fiction playable. The game’s legacy is a fusion of stealth systems and authored spectacle that influenced both action design and expectations for game storytelling.

  22. Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V uses a large contemporary city as a setting for missions, exploration and a story told through three playable protagonists. Switching perspectives creates variety in both the narrative and the way players approach its world. Its enormous cultural footprint makes it a defining open-world release, while its scripted action and free-roaming structure show two different ways the game invites participation. The ranking recognizes the scale of its reach as well as the craft of its world and mission design.

  23. Pokémon Red and Blue

Pokémon Red and Blue gave role-playing progression a social dimension: collecting and training creatures mattered, but trading with another player made the world feel larger than one save file. The simple battle structure supports experimentation with teams, while the collection goal gives players a reason to explore. These games helped establish a global phenomenon and a durable series formula. Later entries have added features, but the original pair’s central loop remains easy to recognize.

  24. BioShock

BioShock combines first-person combat with an underwater setting whose architecture and story reinforce one another. Powers and weapons offer different ways to handle encounters, while the world’s environmental clues gradually reveal what happened there. Its most discussed narrative turn works because the game has already made player agency part of its subject. The result is a shooter whose mechanics, setting and themes are unusually closely connected.

  25. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons made a gentle, self-directed routine into a major social and creative space. Players shape an island over time, decorate it and share visits with others, making personal expression a central part of the experience. Its open-ended pace offered a striking contrast to games built around urgency or mastery. GamesRadar+ reported a figure of 34 million copies sold since launch in its entry, but the passage does not establish a publication date or current official total; it should not be read as an up-to-date sales figure.

  26. Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2 builds on the first game’s gravity-based platforming with a steady supply of new stage ideas and challenges. Its levels are often compact, sharply focused tests of movement, which helps the game sustain variety without losing precision. Metacritic’s all-time page includes it among games with high review scores, a reminder of its critical standing. A score-based listing captures one dimension of reception, not the whole measure of influence or lasting play.

  27. Journey

Journey shows how a short, largely wordless game can create a strong emotional arc. Its movement and visual direction make the destination legible, while the possibility of briefly encountering another player adds human connection without conventional dialogue. The experience is designed around forward motion and shared presence rather than complex systems. Its restraint makes it distinctive: every element supports the same quiet passage through an unfamiliar landscape.

  28. Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus turns a sparse world and a small number of enormous encounters into an unusual adventure. Each colossus is both an enemy and a physical puzzle, requiring players to read its movement and climb its body to find a weakness. The empty spaces between fights give the journey a solemn mood. Its design shows that scale can come from contrast and pacing, not from filling every part of a map with activity.

  29. Hades

Hades gives repeated attempts a narrative purpose. Each escape run changes the combination of abilities available, while characters respond to progress and failure so that returning to the starting point still advances the story. Its fast combat, readable encounters and careful writing make a loop that could feel repetitive instead feel cumulative. The game’s achievement is not merely a polished action system; it is the way progression, character and retrying all support one another.

  30. World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft made a persistent online world feel like a place to inhabit with other people. Quests and character progression offer individual goals, but the social structure—guilds, group challenges and shared discoveries—gives the world its lasting identity. Its influence reaches well beyond one game, shaping expectations for online role-playing and live communities. The experience has changed over time, so this selection recognizes the game’s historical and cultural importance rather than claiming every present-day version is the same as its original form.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  31. StarCraft

StarCraft is a real-time strategy game built around asymmetric factions: each side follows a different logic, yet the game maintains competitive balance through the interplay of those differences. Gathering resources, scouting and choosing when to commit create a demanding rhythm of long-term planning and rapid decisions. Its competitive scene helped make strategy play a spectator event and a durable community practice. It belongs here for both its mechanical clarity and its influence on organized play.

  32. Pac-Man

Pac-Man gives a maze, a handful of rules and a set of pursuers enough variety to sustain a lasting arcade challenge. Players must read enemy behavior, choose routes and decide when to use limited opportunities to turn the tables. Its characters and visual identity became recognizable far beyond the arcade, giving it unusual cultural reach for a game with such concise mechanics. Its longevity rests on how quickly a new player can understand the goal and how much precision mastery still demands.

  33. GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye 007 translated a spy-film license into a first-person game that rewarded objectives and stealth as well as shooting. Its campaign gave missions distinct tasks, while its local multiplayer created memorable competition around compact arenas and weapon choices. It helped establish console first-person action as a social experience for many players. Its controls and presentation are tied to their era, but its influence on console shooters and couch multiplayer remains significant.

  34. Wii Sports

Wii Sports made motion controls immediately legible by borrowing familiar physical gestures from sports. Its short events invited people who might not think of themselves as game players to participate, and local multiplayer made the act of playing visible and social. The game’s simplicity is a design decision, not a lack of ambition: it demonstrates how interface and accessibility can broaden the audience for games. Its cultural impact is central to its place in this ranking.

  35. Celeste

Celeste pairs demanding platforming with a story about anxiety, self-doubt and persistence. Its precise controls make failure informative: players can quickly try again, understand what went wrong and improve. The game’s assist options also let people adjust the challenge without removing the core experience. Its achievement is the unity between mechanics and theme, with the act of climbing becoming both a concrete test and an emotional metaphor.

  36. Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers a fantasy world built to support wandering as much as quest completion. Its broad character options and open-ended progression let players choose what kind of adventurer to become, while the landscape keeps presenting new points of interest. The game’s reach across platforms and repeated editions has helped it remain visible for years. Its scale can make the experience uneven, but its freedom and sense of discovery have made it a defining open-world role-playing game.

  37. Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds makes knowledge the player’s main form of progress. Rather than improving a character through equipment, it asks players to observe a miniature solar system, connect clues and use what they learn to reach new discoveries. Its time loop gives exploration urgency while keeping the world’s mysteries coherent. The game is at its best when the player works out a solution independently, so explaining its surprises would undermine the very design that makes it memorable.

  38. Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium reimagines role-playing around conversation, investigation and a protagonist’s divided inner life. Skills act as voices and perspectives, shaping how players interpret the world as much as how they solve problems. Its writing is unusually ambitious, but the game’s systems matter: choices about identity and ability change what can be noticed and said. It expands the idea of what a role-playing game can ask players to do, making language and self-understanding central mechanics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  39. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

A Link to the Past gives its adventure a clear, satisfying structure: explore, acquire tools, discover new routes and return to places with a changed understanding of them. Its parallel worlds add a strong spatial idea to a carefully paced action-adventure. The game helped establish design patterns that the series would revisit for years, while its map and dungeons remain rewarding on their own terms. It is a foundational example of how progression can make a world feel larger over time.

  40. Halo: Combat Evolved

Halo: Combat Evolved helped define console first-person shooting through a readable combat loop, a memorable setting and carefully paced encounters. Its two-weapon limit encourages choices, while enemy types and open combat spaces reward movement and target priority. The campaign balances spectacle with room to improvise, and local multiplayer helped make the game a social fixture. Its influence is visible in how console shooters approached control, pacing and competitive play.

  41. Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV combines a long-form role-playing story with a persistent online world and cooperative play. Its scale gives players many routes into the experience, from following the narrative to joining others in group activities. The game’s continuing evolution makes it a different kind of all-time selection from a fixed, self-contained release: its legacy includes the community and changing world built over time. Its place recognizes how online games can sustain shared stories and social spaces.

Choosing which version to play

A ranking can identify a landmark without answering the practical question of which copy to buy or download. For a current player, the relevant version may be an original release, a remaster, a remake or a port. These can differ in platform, presentation, controls and availability. For instance, Breath of the Wild was released for Wii U and Switch, while the original Final Fantasy VII and later editions are separate releases. Confirm the exact title, platform and edition in the store or on the physical listing for your region before purchasing.

Older games can require more patience with dated interfaces or controls. That does not erase their influence, but it matters when deciding what to play first. If your goal is to understand a historical landmark, the original version may be the clearest reference where it is accessible. If your goal is a comfortable modern playthrough, a later edition may be a better fit. The title alone is not always enough to identify the experience you will get.

What this list can—and cannot—settle

The 40 games above cover different ambitions: mastering a score-chasing puzzle, exploring an open world, competing against another person, inhabiting a story or sharing a persistent online space. Their achievements are not reducible to one review number. Critical scores can help describe reception; list aggregation can show which games recur across many rankings; editorial and audience votes reveal other kinds of judgment. None alone captures every reason a game matters.

That is why a different reader could reasonably produce a different top 40. A list centered on historical influence would elevate some early arcade and genre-defining releases; one centered on current accessibility might favor newer editions; a genre-specific list would make room for games left out here. This ranking is a starting point for discovery and debate, not a final accounting of the medium.
