White and silver hair has become one of Dragon Ball’s clearest visual signals for transcendence, but the franchise does not have an official category called “white-haired forms.” This ranking therefore evaluates designs, not battle power, canon status, or a single transformation system. The first two entries are transformations; the remaining picks are clearly labeled as medium-specific variants or white-haired character states that help explain why the look works.
Each design is judged on silhouette and hair shape, how different it feels from the character’s other appearances, how well it expresses that character, readability in color and monochrome, and the memorability of its reveal imagery.

How this ranking defines a “white-haired form”
In fan discussions, “white-haired Goku” normally means perfected or completed Ultra Instinct, while “Ultra Instinct Sign” means the earlier black-haired state. A GameFAQs poll used exactly that distinction: “Ultra Instinct Sign (Goku’s hair is still black)” versus “Ultra Instinct (White Hair).” It received 40 votes, split 20–20. That is a small, self-selected forum sample, not a representative measure of Dragon Ball fans, but it shows how firmly the visual distinction has entered fan vocabulary.

The list also includes designs that are not separate power-ups. Gohan Beast is a distinct form commonly compared with Ultra Instinct because both use a pale, high-contrast hair design. Master Roshi’s Ultra Instinct technique and Whis’s angelic appearance are included as design benchmarks rather than as equivalent transformations. Keeping those categories separate prevents a visual ranking from pretending that every entry has the same story role.

1. Goku’s perfected Ultra Instinct (anime silver-haired design)
Why it ranks first
Goku’s completed Ultra Instinct is the cleanest translation of an abstract idea—automatic, instinctive movement—into a readable character design. The hair turns silver-white, rises in a controlled flame-like mass, and is paired with a calm expression and a restrained aura. Nothing about the silhouette requires a complicated costume change. The viewer can identify the state from the hair, eyes, posture, and movement alone.
The strongest choice is the contrast with Goku’s usual visual language. Super Saiyan forms traditionally communicate escalation through louder color and more aggressive energy. Ultra Instinct reverses that emphasis: the pale hair and cool aura suggest clarity rather than rage. Goku still has the familiar spiky outline, but the reduced color temperature and composed face make him look less like a stronger version of the same fighter and more like someone operating by a different set of rules.
Silhouette and clarity
In full color, silver hair against a dark background gives the form immediate separation from Goku’s black-haired base design. In monochrome manga panels, the shape remains identifiable because the spikes are arranged as one coherent crown instead of a noisy collection of thin locks. That matters in fast action scenes, where a form has to read in a fraction of a second.

The design’s success also creates its main limitation: later white-haired characters can feel visually adjacent to it. Once silver hair became associated with godlike calm, a new form needed another differentiator—facial structure, aura behavior, clothing, or body language—to avoid looking like a variation on Goku. Ultra Instinct remains the benchmark, but that benchmark makes comparison unavoidable.

2. Gohan Beast
Why it ranks second
Gohan Beast works because it does not simply copy Goku’s Ultra Instinct presentation. Its white hair is much larger and more vertical, producing a sharper, more dramatic silhouette. The design communicates an eruption of buried potential rather than effortless serenity. Where Ultra Instinct narrows Goku’s visual presence into precision, Beast expands Gohan’s into raw intensity.
The form also expresses Gohan specifically. His character history is built around sudden surges of power triggered by emotion, and the Beast design turns that history into a graphic statement: an extreme hair profile, a fixed stare, and a posture that feels heavier and more confrontational than Goku’s. The result is recognizable even when the palette is reduced to black, white, and gray.
Why the comparison with Ultra Instinct is useful
Secondary reference material and fan discussions treat Beast as distinct from Ultra Instinct while still comparing their white or silver hair. That comparison is useful only as a design discussion. It does not establish that the forms are equivalent, that they were created for the same narrative purpose, or that one is stronger. Beast earns its place by giving pale hair a different emotional meaning.

The exaggerated spikes are memorable, but they can dominate Gohan’s face and make the form less flexible in quiet scenes. Ultra Instinct can appear controlled in a close-up; Beast is most effective when the composition gives its silhouette room to loom. That is a deliberate trade-off, and it is why the form feels like a reveal rather than a subtle evolution.

3. Goku’s Ultra Instinct in the manga presentation
A separate design reading, not a separate power ranking
The manga and anime presentations of Ultra Instinct are related, but they are not identical illustrations. Line weight, panel composition, shading, and the amount of visible aura change how the silver-white hair reads. In print, the form often depends on stark black-and-white contrast: bright hair against heavy shadows, with speed lines and empty space doing as much work as color would in animation.
That makes the manga presentation worthy of its own design position. It is less about a new transformation than about how the same visual idea survives a different medium. The hair must remain legible without animation frames, voice performance, or color effects. Strong panel silhouettes and controlled highlights allow the form to carry that burden.
What makes the manga look distinctive
- Monochrome confidence: the design does not need a silver fill to read as a separate state.
- Negative space: uncluttered backgrounds make the pale hair and eyes feel almost detached from the page.
- Motion through composition: the body position and panel rhythm sell instinctive movement even in a still image.
- Less dependence on spectacle: the form can look imposing without a large animated aura.
Its lower position than the anime design is not a judgment on canon or power. The anime has more tools for making a first reveal instantly spectacular; the manga excels at graphic economy.

Why include a non-transformative state?
Master Roshi demonstrates an important limitation of the phrase “white-haired form”: hair color alone does not define a transformation. Roshi already has white hair, beard, and eyebrows, so an Ultra Instinct technique state does not announce itself through a new color. Its design impact comes from the contrast between his familiar elderly silhouette and the precise, economical movement associated with the technique.

As a visual concept, this is almost the inverse of Goku’s perfected Ultra Instinct. Goku’s silver hair tells the audience that his body has crossed into a new state. Roshi’s unchanged appearance asks the audience to notice stance, timing, and expression instead. The result is less immediately iconic than Goku or Gohan, but it demonstrates how white hair can function as character identity rather than transformation shorthand.
Strengths and limitations
- Strength: the design keeps Roshi unmistakably Roshi, preserving the comedy and wisdom built into his appearance.
- Strength: the lack of a costume overhaul makes the technique feel learned and embodied rather than cosmetically activated.
- Limitation: viewers looking for a dramatic “before and after” form receive fewer visual cues.
- Limitation: because the hair is not newly white, the entry belongs in a broad design ranking, not a strict transformation-only list.
5. Whis’s angelic design
A benchmark for controlled white-haired design
Whis is not a transformation, but his design explains why white hair carries such a strong association with otherworldly mastery in Dragon Ball. The pale hair is tall and orderly rather than explosively spiked. His expression remains relaxed, and the surrounding costume uses clean geometric shapes and cool tones. Every element reinforces distance from ordinary martial-arts escalation.
That restraint gives Whis a different kind of memorability. Goku’s Ultra Instinct says “a fighter has entered an extraordinary state.” Whis’s design says “this level of existence is normal for me.” The hair is part of a complete visual system—calm posture, formal clothing, staff, and balanced proportions—rather than a single transformation signal.
Why it places fifth
Whis is exceptionally coherent, but the design is less of a reveal because it is his baseline appearance. A ranking focused strictly on transformations would exclude him. Included as a white-haired design, however, he shows the value of consistency: the silhouette is recognizable in a small image, the palette remains clear in monochrome, and the character’s role is communicated before he moves.

What the fan poll can—and cannot—tell us
The 40-vote GameFAQs poll is useful for language, not for a definitive verdict. Its 20–20 split between black-haired Ultra Instinct Sign and white-haired Ultra Instinct shows that fans treat the two looks as meaningfully different. It does not measure the wider Dragon Ball audience, and it does not prove that one design is objectively better. The ranking above is an editorial judgment using visual criteria, not a statistical result.
Collectibles and the Ultra Instinct look
An Ultra Instinct Goku PVC figure was listed as a collectible and was marked sold out when the captured retailer page was viewed. That confirms the design’s relevance to the figure market, but it does not establish current stock, licensing terms, Amazon availability, or future restocks. Treat any listing as time-sensitive and verify the seller, edition, and authenticity before buying.
How to choose your favorite design
- Choose Ultra Instinct if you value the clearest transformation silhouette and a calm alternative to traditional Super Saiyan escalation.
- Choose Beast if you prefer a larger, more aggressive profile that communicates emotion and latent power.
- Choose the manga presentation if monochrome composition, line weight, and panel readability matter more than animated color effects.
- Choose Roshi’s state if you like designs that communicate mastery through movement and posture instead of a new costume.
- Choose Whis if your priority is a complete, consistently otherworldly character design rather than a transformation reveal.
On a strict transformation-only reading, Goku’s perfected Ultra Instinct is the winner and Gohan Beast is the strongest alternative. The broader five-entry ranking is more useful because it shows the full range of what white hair does in Dragon Ball: it can signal a new state, amplify a character’s emotional identity, survive a change of medium, or simply establish an aura of effortless mastery.
