In 2021, a 93-year-old grandfather in Tokyo tried sim racing after seeing his grandson’s racing wheel. The videos show him steering familiar cars around virtual tracks, including a Mazda Savanna RX7 connected to his memories of driving. Reports describe an enjoyable return to the wheel—not a measured skills ranking.
Who is the 93-year-old gamer?
He was a Tokyo grandfather whose grandson filmed him trying racing games in 2021. The reports do not establish his full name, and they do not describe him as a professional racing driver. Kotaku reported that he had driven taxis in Tokyo in the 1960s and dump trucks from the 1970s through the 1990s. Kotaku’s May 14, 2021 story provides that background.
Why the Mazda RX7 mattered
The personal connection is central to the videos: accounts link him to a Mazda Savanna RX7 he had driven or owned. Kotaku described a video of him driving the car in a game for the first time in well over 20 years. The spelling varies between reports—“Savanna” and “Savana”—so the important point is the familiar model, not a precise ownership timeline. The vehicle appears as a link to his past behind the wheel, rather than simply another virtual car.
Which racing games did he play?
Reports name several games, but do not establish that they all appear in the same video.

- Project CARS 2: RPP reported that he played it using a driving kit.
SoraNews24’s May 13, 2021 report describes the first try and the wheel-and-pedal controls. RPP’s account names Project CARS 2 and Assetto Corsa, and connects the RX7 to the grandfather’s driving history.
What was his racing setup?
The reporting describes a racing wheel and pedals. SoraNews24 specifically notes that he used the accelerator, brake, and clutch while driving with a manual transmission. The sources do not identify the wheel’s manufacturer or model, nor do they establish the exact hardware arrangement. It is therefore not possible to identify his rig more specifically from these reports.

Are his skills really “unbelievable”?
That wording is a promotional description, not a verified performance assessment. The reports establish that he tried and enjoyed sim racing; they do not give a lap-time comparison, competition result, or other independent measure of his ability. The striking part is the crossover between decades of real-world driving and returning to a car he remembered through a racing game.
