The Atari ST at 40: Six Games That Show What Made It Different

The Atari ST debuted in 1985, making 2025 its 40th-anniversary year. The Rhode Island Computer Museum identifies it as Atari’s first 16-bit computer system and lists its production span as 1985–1993. To mark the anniversary, Stuff’s Craig Grannell selected six games that, in his view, capture the machine’s distinctive mix of play and experimentation.

What the Atari ST’s 40th anniversary marks

The anniversary is tied to the ST’s 1985 debut year, not to a confirmed worldwide launch date. The Rhode Island Computer Museum describes the ST as Atari’s first 16-bit computer system and records production from 1985 to 1993. That production span is not a sales total: no traceable original-publisher sales or market-share figure is established here.

Grannell described the machine as “part games machine, part serious workhorse, and part accidental rave enabler” in his 25 July 2025 Stuff feature. Its account of the ST’s work-and-play identity also highlights built-in MIDI ports, and discusses Cubase, Creator (which the feature says later evolved into Logic), and the multiplayer game MIDI Maze. Those are the feature’s characterizations; they should not be taken as a measure of how widely musicians used the ST.

Six Atari ST games to try

These are Grannell’s editorial picks, chosen to highlight what he sees as the ST’s identity, including exclusives and firsts. They are not an objectively ranked list of the six best games, and the feature does not present all six as ST exclusives.

Game Year What you do A good starting point if you want…
Oids 1987 Navigate gravity and rescue people in a twitchy arcade game. Precision and fast reactions.
Starglider 2 1988 Fight in space. Space combat.
Llamatron 2112 1991 Play Jeff Minter’s arcade reinterpretation. An idiosyncratic, arcade-focused experience.
Dungeon Master 1987 Explore a dungeon from a first-person perspective. A dungeon crawler.
Vroom 1991 Race. Driving action.
Speedball II 1990 Compete in futuristic sports. A fast, violent sports game.

The years and play descriptions in the table follow the Stuff feature. Use the play-style column to pick a genre that appeals to you; the list does not establish a best-to-worst order.

Why the list helps explain the ST

The six games cover sharply different kinds of play: arcade rescue, space combat, a Minter-style arcade spin, dungeon exploration, racing, and futuristic sport. That variety makes the selection a useful tour of the ST as a game platform, while the feature’s MIDI discussion points to an identity that extended beyond games. The Computer History Museum’s Atari history provides wider company context, but it is not a source for ST hardware specifications.

The sources cited for this anniversary and these picks do not establish processor speed, memory, display modes, sound hardware, or an independently verified scale for the ST’s music-production use. They also do not support a reliable sales or market-share figure. Those details are best left out rather than filled with figures that cannot be traced to an original source.
