The right alternative depends on the part of an award-winning game you want to keep. Astro Bot is a benchmark for polished 3D platforming; Balatro is a benchmark for flexible, replayable deckbuilding; and Metaphor: ReFantazio is a benchmark for story-led role-playing. This guide maps each anchor to alternatives by movement, combat, tone, difficulty, pacing, platform and solo or multiplayer structure.
How to choose an alternative without losing what you liked
Award recognition is a useful discovery signal, not a guarantee that two games will feel alike. Start by naming the feature that made the winner work for you. You might want precise jumping rather than collectibles, short runs rather than poker themes, or a social calendar rather than a particular fantasy setting. Then choose an alternative that preserves that feature and deliberately changes the parts you want to leave behind.

- Movement and level design: Choose a platformer or action-adventure game when physical control, camera behavior and the shape of each level matter most.
- Run structure: Choose a deckbuilder when you want self-contained attempts, escalating decisions and a different build every time.
- Story and party systems: Choose a role-playing game when characters, dialogue, exploration and long-term progression are the main attraction.
- Combat intensity: Choose an action RPG when timing, enemy patterns and build choices matter more than turn order.
- Time and platform: Confirm the platform, edition and current availability separately. Award records do not tell you whether a particular retailer has stock or whether a version is sold in your region.
Best alternatives to Astro Bot
Astro Bot is the clearest current anchor for polished 3D platforming and family-friendly action-adventure. GameDeveloper.com reported that Team Asobi’s game won The Game Awards 2024 Game of the Year, along with Game Direction, Action/Adventure and Family Game. Its appeal comes from responsive movement, compact challenges, playful presentation and a steady stream of discoveries. The alternatives below preserve different parts of that formula rather than attempting to imitate it exactly.
| Game | Preserves from Astro Bot | Changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super Mario Odyssey | Expressive 3D movement, inventive worlds and collectible-driven exploration | More open-ended objectives and a different capture-based ability system | Players who want broader exploration and experimentation |
| Sackboy: A Big Adventure | Accessible platforming, colorful stages and cooperative play | More emphasis on costume customization and optional multiplayer | Families and groups seeking shared play |
| Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time | Readable platforming challenges and collectible hunting | Stricter timing, more demanding jumps and a higher failure rate | Players who want a tougher test |
| Psychonauts 2 | Creative 3D worlds, character-focused humor and varied abilities | More narrative emphasis and a less purely mechanical platforming focus | Players who value story and imaginative settings |
| Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | Colorful action-adventure presentation, accessible controls and constant spectacle | Third-person shooting and weapon experimentation replace precision platforming as the core | Players who want action with platforming support |
Super Mario Odyssey: the exploration-first choice
Choose Super Mario Odyssey if the joy of Astro Bot came from discovering what a level allows rather than following a single route. Its worlds invite detours, experimentation and repeated returns after you gain a new ability. The movement remains approachable, but the game gives you more room to improvise than a tightly staged platforming course. That makes it a strong fit for curious players and a less direct fit for anyone who prefers short, carefully choreographed challenge rooms.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Its collectible structure also changes the pacing. You can pursue a clear objective, wander for hidden rewards or stop after a small success. That flexibility is excellent for mixed-skill households, although players seeking a constant sequence of linear set pieces may find the looser structure less focused.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure: the cooperative and family-friendly choice
Sackboy is the practical alternative when the priority is approachable platforming that works well with other people. Its stages use familiar run, jump and timing ideas, while costumes and crafting-themed presentation provide a softer tone. Cooperative play changes the experience substantially: communication and occasional chaos become part of the challenge instead of every mistake being a solitary one.
It is less ideal if your favorite Astro Bot moments are demanding movement chains or tightly timed solo mastery. For families, younger players and adults who want a relaxed shared session, however, its accessibility and optional multiplayer are the central advantages.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time: the precision test
Crash 4 keeps the readable side-scrolling logic of classic platformers while adding modern movement options and demanding collectible routes. Compared with Astro Bot’s welcoming rhythm, it asks you to learn exact jump distances, enemy timing and checkpoint placement. Failure is more common, and completion goals can turn familiar stages into serious practice exercises.
Pick it when you want an alternative that preserves platforming as the entire point but raises the mechanical bar. Avoid it if you mainly want a gentle, family-oriented tour of inventive worlds.
Psychonauts 2: the story-rich platformer
Psychonauts 2 is a better match for players who remember Astro Bot’s characters, visual jokes and changing environments more than any individual jump. Each major setting has its own visual language and gameplay ideas, and the narrative gives those spaces context. Platforming remains important, but exploration and dialogue occupy more of the experience.
The result is a more conversational, story-led adventure. It can feel less immediately toy-like than Astro Bot, yet it offers more character development for players who want a platformer with a substantial narrative spine.

Rift Apart is the choice when Astro Bot’s polished presentation and constant surprises appealed to you, but you want combat to carry more weight. Movement, platforming and dimension-hopping set pieces support a third-person shooter built around a broad weapon selection. Encounters ask you to switch tools, control crowds and manage space rather than simply land a jump.

It is still accessible and colorful, but its rhythm is more combat-forward. Select it when you want spectacle and variety; choose one of the pure platformers when movement mastery should remain the main event.
Best games like Balatro
Balatro is the strongest card-game anchor in this group. The Game Developers Choice Awards archive lists it as the 2025 Game of the Year winner for games released in 2024, as well as winner of Best Debut, Best Design and the Innovation Award. Its identity comes from combining poker-style hands with deck construction, escalating modifiers and runs that can change direction when a single powerful interaction appears.
| Game | Run and deck identity | Randomness and difficulty | Choose it if you want |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slay the Spire | Character-specific decks, branching maps and relic combinations | Random encounters and card rewards create different routes; difficulty rises through repeated ascensions | Strategic planning with transparent turn-by-turn combat |
| Monster Train | Multi-floor battles, two-unit clans and upgrade-focused deckbuilding | High-synergy builds can become extremely powerful, while later challenges add restrictions | More board positioning and explosive combos |
| Inscryption | Card battles embedded in a mystery-driven adventure | Progression is shaped by discovery and story as well as traditional run decisions | A darker, more experimental presentation |
| Wildfrost | Small decks, companion units and a timing-based battle line | Positioning and turn order make each mistake costly; runs reward careful sequencing | A compact, demanding tactical puzzle |
| Griftlands | Separate negotiation and combat decks tied to a branching campaign | Choices affect relationships, rewards and future encounters | Story consequences alongside deckbuilding |
Slay the Spire: the clearest strategic successor
Slay the Spire is the first stop for anyone who wants Balatro’s repeatable runs and decisions that compound over time without needing the same poker vocabulary. You select a character, choose routes through a branching map and assemble a deck whose strengths emerge from card and relic combinations. Combat is turn-based and legible: you can see enemy intentions, weigh immediate defense against future damage and decide whether a tempting reward will damage the deck’s consistency.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Its difficulty curve is more explicit than Balatro’s. Early runs teach fundamentals, while higher ascension levels add constraints that demand tighter drafting and route planning. The game therefore suits players who want to study a system over dozens of attempts rather than chase one spectacular combo.
Monster Train: the high-synergy alternative
Monster Train keeps the deckbuilder loop but adds a multi-floor battlefield and units that can be upgraded and repositioned. Battles become questions of where to place a unit, which floor to defend and when to spend a limited resource. The extra spatial layer creates more visible board states than Balatro’s hand-based calculations.
Choose it if you enjoy finding interactions that make a build snowball. Its strongest runs can feel deliberately excessive, while late challenge modifiers test whether your strategy still functions when a favorite combination is restricted.
Inscryption: the atmosphere-first alternative
Inscryption is for players who liked Balatro’s willingness to turn a familiar card premise into something strange. Card battles sit inside a mystery, and progression includes exploration and discovery rather than only run optimization. The tone is markedly darker, so it is a poor fit if you want Balatro’s bright, score-chasing immediacy.

The trade-off is intentional uncertainty. You are not always choosing cards from a neutral menu; you are learning what the game is willing to reveal. That makes the experience memorable but less suitable for players seeking a pure, endlessly repeatable deckbuilding sandbox.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Wildfrost: the precision and timing alternative
Wildfrost compresses deckbuilding into a small battlefield where companion placement, countdowns and turn order matter. Because the deck and board are compact, each decision is easy to inspect and difficult to dismiss. A technically strong card can still fail when it is played in the wrong position or at the wrong moment.
It is a good follow-up for Balatro players who want shorter tactical chains and a sharper punishment for sequencing errors. Expect a steeper initial learning curve than Balatro’s accessible hand-building premise.
Griftlands: the narrative deckbuilder
Griftlands adds a second deckbuilding track for negotiation, allowing conversations and relationships to have mechanical consequences. A run is therefore about more than winning fights: you decide whom to help, whom to antagonize and which rewards will shape later encounters.
Pick it when you want a story and meaningful choices around the card system. If your priority is an immediately replayable score engine with minimal narrative interruption, Slay the Spire or Monster Train is a closer fit.
Best alternatives to Metaphor: ReFantazio
Metaphor: ReFantazio is the narrative-RPG anchor. GameDeveloper.com reported that it won Best Narrative, Art Direction and Best RPG at The Game Awards 2024. The Game Developers Choice Awards archive lists it as a Best Narrative finalist. Those honors reflect a game built around a large-scale journey, party relationships, stylized worldbuilding and a combat system that asks you to prepare for different enemy types.
| Game | Story and party focus | Combat and exploration | Time commitment profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Persona 5 Royal | Dense character arcs, school-life scheduling and relationship progression | Turn-based battles with elemental weaknesses; urban areas are revisited through a calendar | Very long, with a strong emphasis on routine and social planning |
| Dragon Quest XI | Traditional heroic fantasy and a large ensemble cast | Classic turn-based combat, broad exploration and a more straightforward quest flow | Long, but easier to approach in self-contained story chapters |
| Octopath Traveler II | Eight protagonists with separate stories that gradually intersect | Turn-based battles built around weakness discovery, boosts and break states | Modular; you can pursue characters and chapters in different orders |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Reactive companions, branching choices and consequence-driven storytelling | Turn-based tactical combat with environmental interactions and extensive exploration | Very long and highly variable depending on how thoroughly you explore |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | Party-centered drama with a strong cinematic presentation | Real-time party combat, broad zones and optional activities alongside a directed main story | Large; optional content can substantially extend the campaign |
Persona 5 Royal: the social-calendar alternative
Persona 5 Royal is the most natural choice if Metaphor’s appeal lies in balancing a main quest with relationships and daily decisions. Its calendar makes time a resource: spending an afternoon with a friend can unlock abilities, but it also means postponing another activity. The structure creates a strong sense of routine that Metaphor approaches differently through its own journey and party systems.
Combat remains turn-based and weakness-focused, while the social layer is more central to moment-to-moment planning. Choose it for character relationships and schedule optimization; avoid it if you prefer a continuous road-trip structure without school-life repetition.

Dragon Quest XI: the traditional-fantasy alternative
Dragon Quest XI offers a more classic heroic adventure. Its party, towns and quests are presented with a clear traditional-fantasy vocabulary, and turn-based battles are easy to read before deeper tactics emerge through enemy weaknesses and ability choices.

Compared with Metaphor’s stylistic and political intensity, Dragon Quest XI is warmer and more direct. It suits players who want a long RPG with a dependable rhythm of town, dungeon, story scene and battle rather than a more experimental presentation.
Octopath Traveler II: the modular-party alternative
Octopath Traveler II is useful when you want several protagonists but more control over the order in which their stories unfold. Each character brings a distinct combat role and a personal chapter structure, while the weakness-and-break system rewards identifying the correct damage type and timing boosts well.
The modular design means the narrative can feel less tightly unified than Metaphor’s central campaign. In return, it lets you shape the party and route around your own interests, making it a strong option for players who enjoy choosing what to pursue next.

Baldur’s Gate 3 preserves the party-driven role-playing appeal but shifts the emphasis toward player-authored outcomes. Dialogue choices, exploration and environmental interactions can alter quests and relationships, while turn-based battles reward positioning, terrain use and creative combinations.
It is the best fit if you want freedom to solve a problem in several ways. It is less suitable when you want a tightly authored sequence of set pieces or a combat system built around exploiting a fixed list of weaknesses.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: the cinematic action-RPG alternative
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth appears in the Game Developers Choice Awards archive’s pool of major 2024-release finalists alongside Astro Bot, Balatro, Black Myth: Wukong and Metaphor: ReFantazio. It is the choice for players who want a large party, cinematic storytelling and real-time combat rather than Metaphor’s turn-based rhythm.
Its broad zones support optional activities and exploration, but the central story remains strongly directed. Choose it when presentation and party chemistry matter most; select Persona 5 Royal or Baldur’s Gate 3 when social systems or branching decisions are your priority.

| If you want… | Try | Why it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pattern-based boss fights and build experimentation | Elden Ring | Large spaces, varied weapons and flexible character development let you approach difficult encounters in different ways | Less linear and less immediately guided |
| Focused cinematic combat | God of War Ragnarök | Weighty real-time encounters are integrated with a directed character story | Less build freedom than a systems-heavy action RPG |
| Open-zone discovery and equipment variety | Horizon Forbidden West | Exploration, machine-hunting tactics and ranged options create a broad adventure loop | More emphasis on traversal and side activities |
| Technical combo mastery | Devil May Cry 5 | Distinct characters and expressive move sets reward stylish, repeated practice | Much narrower narrative and exploration structure |
Elden Ring: the open-ended challenge
Elden Ring is the strongest alternative when the appeal of an action RPG is discovering a route through difficult encounters on your own terms. You can change equipment, explore elsewhere when blocked and return with a different approach. That flexibility makes failure informative rather than purely repetitive.
The cost is direction. Its world does not always tell you which objective is most important, and its difficulty can spike without the clear pacing of a linear adventure. Choose it for autonomy and experimentation, not for a tightly staged campaign.
God of War Ragnarök: the directed cinematic choice
God of War Ragnarök keeps the focus on a directed story, character relationships and weighty real-time combat. Encounters are readable, weapons have distinct roles and exploration branches from the main path without becoming a fully open-ended quest system.
It is a good bridge between narrative RPGs and action games. Players seeking deep build crafting or a large unexplained world may find it comparatively controlled, but that control is exactly what makes its pacing approachable.
Horizon Forbidden West: the exploration and equipment choice
Horizon Forbidden West combines broad-zone exploration with combat that rewards identifying enemy components and selecting suitable tools. The loop is less about memorizing a single boss pattern and more about preparing for different machine behaviors, terrain and ranges.
Choose it when you want visual spectacle and a substantial world to investigate. Its optional activities and equipment management make it a larger commitment than a compact action campaign.
Devil May Cry 5: the mastery-focused choice
Devil May Cry 5 is for players who want action depth without a large exploration map. Its combat system is built around chaining attacks, switching weapons and improving execution. Replaying encounters is part of the design: a familiar fight becomes a place to test a new sequence rather than merely clear a task.

Check platform, edition and availability before buying
The award records establish recognition, not current stock. Before purchasing, verify the exact platform, region, edition and language options shown by the retailer or digital storefront. A physical listing can refer to a different release from the one you intended, while a digital version may have separate console and PC pages.
- Confirm the platform model and whether the game is native or backward-compatible.
- Check whether a physical listing is a standard, deluxe or bundled edition.
- Verify regional rating, language support and whether downloadable content is included.
- For multiplayer alternatives, check whether online play requires the platform’s current subscription service.
- Check live stock and delivery dates immediately before ordering; these change independently of award status.
What the awards do—and do not—tell you
Awards make the three anchors defensible starting points. Astro Bot’s Game Awards wins establish it as a leading example of 3D platforming and family-friendly action-adventure. Balatro’s Game Developers Choice Awards wins establish its importance among contemporary card and deckbuilding games. Metaphor: ReFantazio’s wins for narrative, art direction and RPG establish it as a major story-led role-playing reference.
They do not tell you which game has the right difficulty, length, control scheme or platform for your household. Use the feature comparisons above to preserve the experience you value, then confirm current product details separately.
