These are role-based recommendations from published guides, not a universal ranking from a controlled comparison. Item level, upgrades, skills, difficulty, enemy level, and execution affect results, so compare a perk’s actual value for your build rather than assuming one set is always superior.

How to choose armor for your build
When two items look promising, compare their perks in context rather than choosing by rarity or set name alone. Ubisoft describes gear and perk synergy, including bonuses that depend on combat circumstances.
- Character fit: Naoe and Yasuke have separate gear, skills, and play styles.
- Combat purpose: Decide whether you need assassination, stealth utility, defense, melee offense, ranged damage, or an affliction effect.
- Trigger reliability: Check when the perk activates. A benefit limited to entering combat, a parry, or an enemy investigating a body may not suit every encounter.
- Current item level and upgrade cost: A useful perk on gear far below your current level may need Forge upgrades to stay practical.
- Build synergy: Consider how the armor works with skills, weapon perks, allies, and engravings.
How armor quality and loot work
Ubisoft describes five equipment quality levels. Quality affects the kinds of stats and customization available, but Legendary is not an automatic winner: Ubisoft notes that an Epic item can sometimes drop with stronger elements than a Legendary one.

Much loot is randomized, but Ubisoft says predetermined items—usually Legendary—are placed on specific targets and in castle chests. The Objective Board and World Map can point you toward these opportunities. Use the item’s actual level, stats, and perk to judge it; the quality label alone does not settle the comparison.
Upgrade and manage the gear you want to keep
At the Hideout, the Forge upgrades gear, dismantles unwanted armor and weapons into materials, engraves perks, and unlocks transmog. The Gallery displays collected gear and unlocks equipment loadouts. Ubisoft’s Hideout overview explains these facilities.

Upgrade-cap information is patch-sensitive. Ubisoft’s July 28, 2025 Title Update 1.0.7 notes say that upgrading the Forge to level 4 allows gear upgrades to level 80 in New Game+. That is the cap stated in those dated notes, not a verified current cap for every later patch.

Use the Objective Board and World Map to identify opportunities for predetermined gear, including castle chests and specific targets. The two Naoe locations established by PC Gamer are Katano Castle in central Izumi Settsu for Tools Master and Tatatsuki Castle in northern Izumi Settsu for Peasant Hat. For other items in the recommendations above, the cited guides do not establish acquisition locations, so no location is stated here.
