Choose The Atronach for a resource-management-heavy mage, The Warrior for straightforward melee, The Lady for durable general play, The Shadow for a once-per-day invisibility tool, and The Steed when an archer’s survival depends on distance. The Mage is the safest uncomplicated choice for a new caster.
You select one of 13 birthsigns during character creation and the tutorial. Each grants attributes, a permanent effect, a spell, or a combination. The right choice depends on your build, how safely you want to play, and whether you can manage its limitation.
Best birthsigns by playstyle
| Playstyle | Best choice | Why it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| General or first character | The Thief | Agility, Luck and Speed all improve early flexibility and movement. | It is less specialized than the strongest mage or tank options. |
| Melee warrior | The Warrior | Strength improves melee capability while Endurance supports early survivability. | It provides less utility outside direct combat. |
| Beginner mage | The Mage | +50 Magicka with no listed drawback. | It has a lower Magicka ceiling than The Atronach. |
| Experienced mage | The Atronach | +150 Magicka and 50% spell absorption. | Natural Magicka regeneration stops, so you need another sustain plan. |
| Archer | The Steed | +20 movement speed makes it easier to keep enemies at range. | It improves mobility rather than ranged damage directly. |
| Thief or rogue | The Thief | Its three attributes support agile, stealth-oriented play. | It does not provide The Shadow’s invisibility spell. |
| Defensive generalist | The Lady or The Lord | The Lady adds Endurance and Willpower; The Lord adds armor and magic resistance. | Both are steadier, less explosive choices than The Thief or The Atronach. |
The complete birthsign effects
The Thief
The Thief grants +10 Agility, +10 Luck and +10 Speed. It is the broadest recommendation: Agility supports agile skills, Speed improves movement, and Luck contributes to overall skill performance. Pick it when you have not committed to a narrow build or want the strongest early all-round package.
The Warrior
The Warrior grants +10 Strength and +10 Endurance. Strength immediately benefits melee combat, while Endurance improves early resilience. It is the cleanest choice for a sword, blunt, or hand-to-hand character who wants no resource-management complication.

The Mage
The Mage grants +50 Magicka with no drawback listed in the cited guides. That extra casting capacity makes it the uncomplicated beginner mage choice, particularly when you do not want to manage The Atronach’s regeneration penalty.
The Atronach
The Atronach grants +150 Magicka and 50% spell absorption, but natural Magicka regeneration is halted. The sign has the highest casting reserve and can turn hostile spells into a resource, yet every spellcaster must plan recovery through absorption, potions or Welkynd Stones. Choose it when you understand that your Magicka bar will not refill normally.
The Lady
The Lady grants +10 Willpower and +10 Endurance. It is a durable generalist option: Endurance supports survivability and Willpower supports Magicka regeneration. It suits characters who want dependable defenses without The Lord’s narrower mitigation package.
Rank #2
The Lord
The Lord grants +15 Armor Rating and +15% magic resistance. Those are direct defensive benefits, making it a mitigation-focused alternative to attribute-heavy signs. Choose it when reducing incoming physical and magical damage matters more than maximizing offensive growth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Steed
The Steed grants +20 movement speed. It does not increase bow damage, but the speed helps an archer create and maintain separation from enemies. It is most valuable when positioning and retreating are central to your defense.
The Shadow
The Shadow provides Moonshadow: invisibility for 60 seconds, once per day. It is a powerful emergency and utility button for stealth, escapes and quest approaches. Its value is concentrated in that single daily use, so it is not a permanent replacement for stealth skills or equipment.

The Ritual
The Ritual provides two powers. Blessed Word makes undead flee for 30 seconds, can be cast multiple times per day, and costs 40 Magicka. Mara’s Gift restores 200 health once per day. It is particularly useful for characters who expect undead encounters and want a substantial emergency heal.
The Apprentice
The Apprentice grants +100 Magicka but also imposes 100% weakness to magic. The larger pool can support frequent spellcasting, but the defensive penalty is severe: hostile magic becomes dramatically more dangerous. It is a high-risk choice for players who can avoid or control magical threats.
The Tower
The Tower grants Tower Key, which opens average locks once per day, and Tower Warden, which reflects 5% of incoming damage for 120 seconds once per day. It offers convenience and a limited defensive window rather than a constant attribute increase.
Rank #4
The Lover
The Lover’s Kiss paralyzes one target for 10 seconds and reduces the caster’s fatigue by 120, once per day. The paralysis can create a decisive opening, but the effect is limited by its daily use and single-target focus.
The Serpent
The Serpent Spell combines 3 poison damage for 20 seconds, a poison cure, a 90-point dispel and 100 fatigue damage to the caster. It can be used once per day. The spell is versatile, but the fatigue cost is significant and must be treated as part of the ability rather than ignored.

Choose The Mage or The Atronach for a mage
Take The Mage if you want extra Magicka with straightforward recovery. Take The Atronach if +150 Magicka and 50% spell absorption are worth building your entire sustain plan around. The distinction is simple: The Mage is easier; The Atronach has the higher ceiling and the harsher management cost.
Choose The Warrior for a melee fighter
Its Strength and Endurance bonuses work immediately for a close-range build and improve the early game without requiring special tactics.
Choose The Steed for an archer
Movement speed is the defining survival stat for a bow user who intends to kite, reposition and avoid being trapped in melee range.
Choose The Shadow for a stealth emergency button
If a one-minute invisibility effect once per day solves problems your build otherwise cannot, Moonshadow is more valuable than The Thief’s general attributes. Pick The Thief instead when you want constant passive benefits.
Choose The Lady or The Lord for defense
The Lady is the broader defensive generalist through Endurance and Willpower. The Lord is the more explicit mitigation choice through Armor Rating and magic resistance.
Quick Recap
Birthsign trade-offs to consider before confirming
- Immediate power versus lasting utility: The Thief, Warrior and Lady improve core attributes continuously, while signs such as The Shadow, Tower and Lover concentrate their value in daily powers.
- Resource management: The Atronach’s bonus is enormous, but halted natural Magicka regeneration means potions, absorption or Welkynd Stones must be part of normal play.
- Risk tolerance: The Apprentice’s 100% weakness to magic can outweigh its +100 Magicka unless you have a reliable answer to hostile spells.
- Build commitment: The Steed is excellent when distance is your defense, while The Warrior is strongest when direct melee is your plan.
- Encounter profile: The Ritual gains special value against undead, whereas The Serpent’s dispel and poison tools are more situational.
