Which game should you choose?
For traditional golf mechanics in a modern game: Mario Golf: Super Rush
Super Rush is the most flexible starting point if you want a current Switch release that still offers a conventional round. Nintendo lists Standard Golf alongside Speed Golf, Battle Golf, and Golf Adventure, so it can serve both measured play and more frantic multiplayer sessions. The US Nintendo listing gives its Switch release date as June 25, 2021. Nintendo’s US product listing has the game details.

Nintendo lists support for one to four players on one system, two to four players over local wireless, and two to four online. It supports button and motion controls, though motion controls are unavailable in Golf Adventure. If you want a more deliberate round, choose Standard Golf rather than the race-oriented modes.
For a genuine older Nintendo golf game: NES Open Tournament Golf
NES Open Tournament Golf is the clearest match for “classic” meaning an older Nintendo release. Nintendo Life identifies it as available in the Nintendo Switch Online NES catalog and describes its golf systems as an early, restrained form of the sport. Its roundup dates the North American NES release to September 29, 1991, and the UK/EU release to June 18, 1992. Those dates refer to the original NES releases, not a new Switch edition. Check the catalog and membership requirements for your region before subscribing specifically to play it. Nintendo Life’s Switch golf roundup covers the retro entry and other alternatives.
#1 Best Overall
- A new , content-packed Mario Golf comes to the Nintendo Switch system
- Simple controls and an improved shot gauge make this a game for rookies and pros alike
- Keep the green fresh with several modes like Standard Golf, Speed Golf, story mode, and more
- Tee off simultaneously with up to three other characters and race through the course in Speed Golf
- Gain experience and level up your stats to rise to the top of your class in story mode
For a story campaign: Golf Story
Golf Story takes inspiration from older handheld Mario Golf games but is an RPG, not a straight golf simulation. It combines golf challenges with a broader story, exploration, and offbeat activities. Choose it if you want a campaign and character progression as much as time on the course; choose a golf-first game if your main interest is playing rounds.
For rounds and gradual course unlocks: Easy Come Easy Golf
Easy Come Easy Golf puts golf closer to the center of the experience. Nintendo Life’s review describes realistic-leaning courses and a Tour mode that gradually unlocks courses and characters, with controller or touchscreen play and local or online options. The reviewer also noted occasional frame dips or stutters and sound that may become repetitive; those are review observations, not a guarantee of how every player will experience the game. The word can describe either a golf style or a release’s age. If you mean measured, turn-based golf, look at Standard Golf in Super Rush or the golf-first play of Easy Come Easy Golf. If you mean an old Nintendo game, NES Open Tournament Golf is the retro route identified for Switch, while Arcade Archives Golf offers an arcade-era alternative. For an RPG inspired by older handheld golf games, choose Golf Story.
