Super Pocket is the best Evercade Nexus alternative for most people: it is inexpensive, genuinely pocketable and accepts Evercade cartridges. Choose Retroid Pocket 5 if you want Android emulation and expandable storage, or Analogue Pocket if you already own original Game Boy-family cartridges and want FPGA hardware recreation. The Nexus itself remains the better fit for a large screen, dual analogue sticks, Wi-Fi 6 and local EverSync multiplayer, but it is not scheduled to launch until 30 October 2026.
There is no single replacement for every part of the Nexus proposition. The right choice depends on whether your priority is Evercade’s physical library, downloadable software, original cartridges, 3D controls, portability or long-session comfort.

In practical terms, buy Super Pocket for the Evercade ecosystem at the lowest entry price, Retroid Pocket 5 for a configurable Android device, and Analogue Pocket for original Nintendo handheld cartridges. Wait for or buy the Nexus when its larger display and dual-stick layout matter more than price and pocketability.

The Nexus is built around physical Evercade cartridges rather than a purely downloadable library. Evercade Info Central lists a 30 October 2026 release date and prices of £169.99, $199.99 and €199.99. Published hardware includes a 5.89-inch IPS display with 840×512 resolution, two analogue sticks, a 5,000mAh battery rated for more than five hours, Wi-Fi 6 and EverSync local multiplayer. HDMI output is not provided, so it is intended primarily as a self-contained handheld.

A Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack cartridge is included. The wider Evercade catalogue is described as more than 80 collections and over 750 games, with cartridges starting at £24.99, $29.99 and €29.99. Those library totals and retail prices can change, so check the current catalogue and shop price before ordering. The physical format gives each purchase a tangible cartridge and, depending on the collection, printed material; it also means the cost of building a library continues after buying the console.
That combination creates the comparison: an alternative must either accept Evercade cartridges, offer another form of physical ownership, or provide enough software flexibility to justify leaving the Evercade ecosystem. Screen size, analogue controls and battery life then determine how comfortable that substitute is for the games you actually play.
HyperMegaTech Super Pocket: the best budget Evercade alternative
Super Pocket is the closest direct substitute because every listed edition includes an Evercade cartridge slot. It also contains a fixed publisher library, so you can play immediately without buying a cartridge. The launch price for most editions is £49.99, $59.99 or €59.99, a fraction of the Nexus price.

Choose the built-in library before you choose the colour
| Edition | Built-in games | What the edition changes |
|---|---|---|
| Taito | 18 | The pre-installed selection is Taito-focused; the cartridge slot adds the wider Evercade catalogue. |
| Capcom | 12 | The pre-installed selection is Capcom-focused. |
| Atari | 50 | The largest listed built-in library, centered on Atari games. |
| Technōs | 15 | The pre-installed selection is Technōs-focused. |
| Neo Geo | 14 | The pre-installed selection is Neo Geo-focused. |
| Data East | 18 | The pre-installed selection is Data East-focused. |
Edition names are not cosmetic: they determine which games are available before you purchase a cartridge. If you are buying for a child or as a gift, match the publisher to the recipient’s favourite series rather than assuming every Super Pocket contains the same games.
What you gain and give up
The 2.8-inch 320×240 screen keeps the unit small, but it is much tighter than the Nexus display. Retro sprites remain readable, while text-heavy menus and games designed for a television can feel cramped. At 165g, the Super Pocket is easy to carry in a pocket or small case. Battery life is about four hours, and there is no Wi-Fi.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
There are no analogue sticks. That is harmless for most 8-bit and 16-bit cartridges, but it rules out the comfortable dual-stick control scheme the Nexus offers for games that need independent movement and camera control. Long sessions can also feel less relaxed than on a larger device. TechRadar has praised Super Pocket’s controls, built-in games and cartridge slot while identifying the small screen as its main compromise.
Who should buy Super Pocket?
- First-time Evercade buyers who want the lowest hardware cost.
- Children and gift recipients who benefit from a simple, ready-to-play library.
- Collectors who want a small cartridge player for travel.
- Players whose favourite games do not require analogue sticks or online features.
Super Pocket is not a scaled-down Nexus in every respect; it is a different balance of price, size and comfort. Add the cost of cartridges when comparing it with a device that already includes the games you want.
Retroid Pocket 5: the best alternative for Android emulation
Retroid Pocket 5 costs $179 and uses Android 13 rather than Evercade cartridges. Its 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display is close to the Nexus in physical size, while the 12GB of RAM, 128GB of UFS storage and TF card slot support a much larger locally managed software collection. A Snapdragon-class CPU/GPU platform, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, a 5,000mAh battery and Hall-effect analogue sticks make it the most technically flexible option in this group.
Why its software model is different
Android lets you install apps, configure emulators and organise game files from multiple sources. That flexibility is useful if you already have legally obtained ROM dumps, Android versions of games or a mixed library. It is not an Evercade player: cartridges cannot be inserted, Evercade collections are not automatically transferred, and the owner is responsible for obtaining software lawfully and configuring it.
Setup therefore takes more time than inserting a cartridge. You must connect the handheld to Wi-Fi, install or update the applications you intend to use, copy your own game files to internal or TF-card storage, map controls and test each emulator. Performance and compatibility depend on the emulator, game and configuration rather than a single curated cartridge release.

Where Pocket 5 beats the cartridge systems
- Hall-effect analogue sticks suit 3D games and reduce the control limitations of stickless handhelds.
- Expandable TF storage lets you carry more software without replacing the internal drive.
- Android provides apps and front ends beyond a fixed publisher catalogue.
- Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 support modern accessories and network features, subject to the software being used.
Where it is the wrong choice
Choose another device if the physical Evercade library, cartridge manuals or a no-configuration experience is central to your collection. Pocket 5 also demands more technical decisions: storage organisation, emulator settings, controller mappings and legal game sourcing are part of ownership. Its $179 price is only the hardware outlay; a TF card, case and any separately purchased software increase the total.
Analogue Pocket: the best choice for original handheld cartridges
Analogue Pocket is designed for owners of original cartridges rather than Evercade buyers. It accepts Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges. Optional adapters extend compatibility to Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, and TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine and SuperGrafx cartridges.
The system uses FPGA hardware instead of software emulation. That approach recreates the behaviour of the original hardware at the device level and is the reason collectors choose it for high-fidelity cartridge play. Analogue describes the display as a “first-class 3.5-inch, 615 ppi, LCD”; the listed resolution is 1600×1440.
The listed price is $239.99, the highest of these choices before adapters. Battery capacity is 4,300mAh, with a stated six-to-10-hour range. The screen is smaller than the Nexus, but its very high pixel density suits Game Boy-era graphics and integer-scaled presentation.
Adapter and collection costs
Adapters are optional rather than included in the base compatibility list. Budget for the specific adapter needed by your cartridges, plus cases or replacement batteries if your original collection requires them. Unlike Evercade, Analogue Pocket does not accept Evercade cartridges, so moving between the ecosystems means buying or retaining separate game libraries.

Who benefits most?
- Collectors who already own original Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance cartridges.
- Players who value hardware recreation over emulator configuration.
- Owners of compatible cartridges who want one modern screen for several handheld generations.
It is poor value if you own no original cartridges and simply want inexpensive access to a broad retro catalogue. In that case, the cartridge cost is an additional barrier rather than an asset.

Physical ownership and library access
Nexus and Super Pocket share the Evercade cartridge format, so cartridges can move between compatible Evercade hardware. Super Pocket adds a built-in publisher library, while Nexus includes the Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack and is designed to showcase a larger screen and dual sticks. Analogue Pocket preserves a different kind of ownership: original cartridges and optional system adapters. Retroid Pocket 5 replaces cartridges with digital files and Android applications, giving the broadest software flexibility but the least curated physical experience.
Analogue sticks and game type
Dual sticks make the Nexus the natural Evercade choice for 3D titles and games that need camera control. Retroid Pocket 5 also targets those games with Hall-effect sticks. Super Pocket has no analogue sticks, so it is best for systems and genres designed around a digital directional pad. Analogue’s published information does not establish analogue-stick support; its strength is cartridge fidelity rather than modern 3D control.
Screen size and shape
Nexus offers the largest listed screen at 5.89 inches. Pocket 5 follows with a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED panel, while Analogue Pocket uses a dense 3.5-inch 1600×1440 LCD. Super Pocket’s 2.8-inch 320×240 panel is the easiest to carry but the most restrictive for small text and long sessions. Resolution alone does not determine image quality: the game’s original aspect ratio, integer scaling and bezel treatment also affect how authentic or comfortable the picture feels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBattery, weight and portability
Super Pocket is the only option here with a published 165g weight, reinforcing its pocket-first design. Its approximately four-hour battery estimate is shorter than the Nexus’s rated five-plus hours and Analogue Pocket’s six-to-10-hour range. Pocket 5 also uses a 5,000mAh battery, but the listed material does not provide a runtime estimate. Analogue’s range varies from six to 10 hours, so brightness, game and settings will affect real use.

Wireless features and television play
Nexus and Pocket 5 list Wi-Fi 6; Nexus pairs that with EverSync local multiplayer, while Pocket 5 also lists Bluetooth 5.1. Super Pocket has no Wi-Fi. Nexus specifically has no HDMI output. The available product information does not establish TV output for Super Pocket, Pocket 5 or Analogue Pocket, so do not buy any of them assuming docked play without confirming the exact model’s current specification.
Setup effort
Super Pocket and Nexus are the simplest: insert an Evercade cartridge, power on and select a game. Analogue Pocket is similarly direct once you own a compatible cartridge, although adapters add a hardware-selection step. Retroid Pocket 5 requires the most preparation because software, emulator settings, storage and legal game files are owner-managed.
Calculate the total cost, not just the console price
A console comparison can hide the price of the library. One Nexus at £169.99 plus one £24.99 cartridge comes to £194.98 before a case or charger. A £49.99 Super Pocket plus the same £24.99 cartridge totals £74.98, but the built-in library may already cover your preferred games. At the listed dollar prices, the equivalent examples are $229.98 for Nexus plus one $29.99 cartridge and $89.98 for a $59.99 Super Pocket plus one $29.99 cartridge.
Recommended Free Tools
Pocket 5 starts at $179 before a TF card, case and any software you purchase. Analogue Pocket starts at $239.99 before adapters and cartridges. These are not equivalent libraries: Evercade cartridges, original handheld cartridges and Android files are separate ecosystems. Compare the games you intend to own, then add the accessories required to carry, protect and charge the device.
Buying checklist for each type of player
Choose Super Pocket when…
- Your budget is the primary constraint.
- You want Evercade cartridges in the smallest listed device.
- You prefer a built-in library and straightforward controls.
- You mainly play digital-pad games and accept a small 2.8-inch screen.
Choose Retroid Pocket 5 when…
- You want Android apps, emulators and expandable storage.
- You play 3D games that benefit from analogue sticks.
- You are comfortable configuring software and managing your own legally obtained files.
- You do not need Evercade cartridge compatibility.
Choose Analogue Pocket when…
- You already own Game Boy-family cartridges.
- FPGA hardware recreation matters more than a large display.
- You are prepared to buy adapters for additional cartridge formats.
- You want a premium collector-focused device.
Choose Nexus when…
- You want Evercade cartridges on a substantially larger screen than Super Pocket.
- Dual analogue sticks are important for 3D games.
- Wi-Fi 6 and EverSync local multiplayer are useful to you.
- You can wait for its listed 30 October 2026 release and accept the higher hardware price.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Super Pocket edition has the same games: built-in libraries range from 12 to 50 titles by publisher, so check the edition name.
- Expecting Retroid Pocket 5 to read Evercade cartridges: it is an Android handheld and requires separately managed software.
- Buying Analogue Pocket without checking adapters: only Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges are listed as native compatibility; other systems require their specific adapters.
- Comparing battery capacities as if they were runtime: the Nexus and Pocket 5 both list 5,000mAh, but only the Nexus publishes a five-plus-hour rating in the available specifications.
- Assuming TV output: the Nexus explicitly lacks HDMI, and TV support for the other devices is not established in the listed information.
- Budgeting only for hardware: cartridges, adapters, storage cards, cases and chargers can materially change the ownership cost.
Bottom line
Super Pocket is the strongest all-round Nexus alternative because it keeps Evercade cartridge compatibility while cutting the entry price and size dramatically. Retroid Pocket 5 is better when software flexibility, Android and analogue-stick 3D play outweigh physical cartridges. Analogue Pocket is the specialist choice for original handheld collections and FPGA fidelity. The Nexus remains the most comfortable Evercade-focused option on paper, combining the group’s largest listed screen with dual sticks, Wi-Fi 6 and EverSync, but its 30 October 2026 launch date and higher price make Super Pocket the practical choice for playing Evercade cartridges now.
