If you want Zelda-style top-down action, start with Spiral Knights. For a solo, compact combat game, try Ruins of Albion. If Fable’s medieval fantasy setting and freedom to roam appeal more, Albion Online is the closest fit here—but it is a player-driven MMORPG with a strong PvP focus, not a story-led solo adventure. Mist Legacy is the slower, turn-based option for character progression and crafting.

Spiral Knights: the strongest Zelda-adjacent pick
Among these options, Spiral Knights has the clearest connection to Zelda-like play: Steam’s Zelda without Zelda curator features it as a top-down action game akin to the Four Swords games. Its Steam description emphasizes fast action and exploration in the Clockworks, with monsters, puzzles, treasure, and cooperative play.
The difference is just as important as the resemblance. Spiral Knights is a co-op adventure in a persistent online world, and its setting is science fiction rather than familiar high-fantasy Zelda. Steam describes it as “a cooperative adventure in a persistent world with a focus on instant, fast-paced action.” It is free to play with no subscription required, but the store page also lists in-app purchases. Ruins of Albion: a compact solo action game
Choose Ruins of Albion if you want to play alone and would rather skip an MMO. Steam lists it as a free single-player action-adventure released September 15, 2021. Its small-scale roguelike format uses procedural levels, melee and ranged attacks, enemies and bosses, and upgrades such as arrows and traps.

That format makes it a practical pick for a focused combat session, but not a substitute for the long exploration, character arc, or authored world of a full-scale RPG. Steam says the game began as a three-month university project and describes it as a small roguelike combat game. Steam store page.
Albion Online: the broadest medieval sandbox
Albion Online is the closest match here if what you want from Fable is a medieval fantasy world with room to make your own way. Steam describes an open-world fantasy sandbox with classless combat, crafting, exploration, a player-driven economy, and PvP. Its listing says nearly every item is player-crafted.

Those systems also make it a very different experience from a Zelda adventure or a Fable campaign. The game is an MMORPG, and other players, trade, crafting, and competitive play are central to its sandbox identity. Mist Legacy: slower, turn-based progression
Mist Legacy is worth considering if progression and crafting matter more to you than real-time combat. Steam describes a top-down MMORPG with turn-based battles, skill-based progression, and crafting. Its measured combat is a clear departure from Zelda-style action, but it offers another route into a fantasy world with character development. Spiral Knights and Albion Online list in-app purchases on their Steam pages. Check each listing for its current store status and details before downloading.
Steam’s free-to-play RPG search covers a broad mix of games, so it is a catalog rather than a quality ranking. This shortlist instead matches four different preferences: Zelda-adjacent co-op action, a compact solo roguelike, a PvP-oriented medieval sandbox, and turn-based MMORPG progression.
