For most iPhone owners, the Backbone One (2nd Generation) is the easiest default: it is an integrated, plug-and-play controller with documented iOS support. Choose the Razer Kishi V3 if a direct USB-C connection, thicker case clearance, cloud gaming, or remote play is your priority. Choose the GameSir G8+ MFi if you want a larger, console-style grip.

How iPhone controller compatibility works
Apple supports compatible Made-for-iPhone (MFi) controllers, console controllers, Bluetooth gamepads and controllers that attach directly to an iPhone through the Game Controller framework. Supported games use standard control profiles, but a controller being recognized by iOS does not guarantee that every game exposes the same buttons or mapping.
Apple’s iPhone guidance allows you to pair or connect a compatible controller, customize buttons for supported games, add a second controller and navigate the Apple Games app. Compatibility therefore has two parts: the phone must connect to the controller, and the individual game or service must support controller input.
Check the connector first
- USB-C: relevant to newer USB-C iPhones. The phone model, port position and case opening still determine physical fit.
- Lightning: remains relevant to older iPhones with Lightning ports. A Lightning Backbone variant cannot be used as a USB-C controller without the correct model.
- Bluetooth: a standalone Xbox or PlayStation controller can be a practical choice if you already own one. Apple documents platform-level compatibility, not a guarantee that every game will map every control.
Check the physical fit
Before buying, verify the exact iPhone model, camera-bump clearance, connector variant, minimum and maximum phone depth, and whether your case can stay on. A case that fits one controller may prevent another from fully seating, even when both are advertised for iPhone.

Backbone One (2nd Generation): the easiest default
The Backbone One (2nd Generation) is the most straightforward recommendation for people who want to slide an iPhone into a compact gamepad and start playing. Its integrated design avoids a separate phone clip, and the second-generation bridge is described as sturdier and able to accommodate more phones and cases than the original.
Why it works well
- Apple’s listing requires iOS 17.0 or later.
- USB-C and Lightning versions cover different iPhone generations; buy the version matching your phone’s port.
- Passthrough charging lets the phone charge while the controller is attached.
- A 3.5 mm headset jack is included, while Bluetooth headphones can continue to use the connected iPhone.
- The listed service support includes Apple Arcade, Xbox Game Pass (xCloud), PS Remote Play, Xbox Remote Play, Google Stadia and Amazon Luna.
Who should skip it
Choose another option if you specifically need the roomier feel of full-size console sticks, the deepest case clearance, or a controller built around a direct USB-C cloud-gaming setup. Also confirm the iOS 17 requirement before purchasing an older or secondary iPhone.

Razer Kishi V3: best for USB-C, cloud and remote play
The Razer Kishi V3 uses a direct USB-C connection rather than Bluetooth. Razer positions it for iPhone and Android and highlights compatibility with popular cloud-gaming and remote-play applications, including Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce Now, Razer PC Remote Play and Steam Link.
Reasons to choose it
- Direct connection: the USB-C link is designed for low-latency play without pairing or a separate battery in the controller.
- Case clearance: Razer emphasizes thicker depth clearance for many phone-and-case combinations, although you still need to check your specific case.
- Streaming focus: the named cloud and remote-play apps make it a strong match for game-streaming libraries and a phone used as a remote screen.
Razer’s Kishi V2 documentation also describes a direct low-latency USB connection, 3.5 mm audio support and a Nexus-app feature that can remap touch-screen controls for compatible mobile games. Those features should not be assumed to be identical across every Kishi V3 configuration; check the live product specification for the exact model.

GameSir G8+ MFi: best full-size alternative
The GameSir G8+ MFi is the choice for players who find compact telescopic controllers too small. Retailer-hosted specifications identify it as an MFi-certified Type-C controller compatible with iPhone, iPad and Android, with a phone mount and a conventional console-style layout.
What you get
- Full-size textured grips rather than the narrower feel of many compact phone controllers.
- Dual analog sticks, a D-pad and ABXY face buttons arranged in a familiar console layout.
- A mounted-phone design that keeps the display between the controls.
Its larger format is a benefit for longer sessions and games that rely heavily on both sticks. It is less pocket-friendly than the Backbone or Kishi designs, and the Type-C connection means you must confirm that your iPhone and case provide the required port access.

Choose by the way you play
Native iOS games and Apple Arcade
Backbone is the simplest starting point when you mainly play controller-enabled iPhone games or Apple Arcade titles. The Kishi V3 and GameSir G8+ MFi can also work when a game supports the relevant standard controller profile; the game’s own compatibility remains the deciding factor.
Cloud gaming
For Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce Now or similar services, favor the Kishi V3 if your phone is USB-C and you want a direct connection with case clearance aimed at streaming setups. Backbone is also suitable where the listed service and your iOS version match.
Best Value
- FULL SIZED CONTROLLER FORM FACTOR — Console performance meets mobile convenience for iPhone* and Android; play for extended periods in complete comfort and control with larger ergonomic handles that feel more natural to hold than standard mobile controllers (*iPhone 15 series and up)
- FULL SIZED TMR THUMBSTICKS — Perfect your aim with high-precision, anti-drift thumbsticks that are superior to Hall Effect designs
- DUAL MOUSE CLICK BACK BUTTONS — Enjoy the same ultra-responsive actuation found in our top gaming mice with 2 back buttons built into the controller’s ergonomic handles
- UNPARALLELED CASE COMPATIBILITY — Fits many popular phone cases thanks to an innovative USB C ‘island’ design and thicker depth clearance than other controllers
- POWERED BY THE RAZER NEXUS GAME LAUNCHER — Launch games, customize controls, record and share gameplay, and keep the controller updated with a free* app that can be brought up at the touch of a dedicated button. (*Razer Nexus does not require a fee/subscription, however some apps within Razer Nexus do)
Remote play from a console or PC
Backbone’s listing names PS Remote Play and Xbox Remote Play. Razer specifically names Razer PC Remote Play and Steam Link for the Kishi V3. In either case, network quality affects the streamed picture and response; the controller cannot remove internet or home-network delay.
Long sessions and larger hands
Start with the GameSir G8+ MFi if grip comfort and full-size controls matter more than portability. Compact controllers are easier to carry, but their shorter handles and smaller sticks may be less comfortable for extended play.
Purchase checklist
- Identify your exact iPhone model and whether it has a USB-C or Lightning port.
- Check the controller listing’s iOS requirement, including the Backbone requirement of iOS 17 or later.
- Confirm the connector variant; a USB-C controller and a Lightning controller are not interchangeable choices.
- Measure or verify phone-and-case depth, camera-bump clearance and port alignment.
- Decide whether you need passthrough charging, a 3.5 mm headset jack, Bluetooth audio or touch-control remapping.
- Confirm that your specific game, Apple Arcade title or streaming service supports a gamepad.
- Review the live retailer or manufacturer listing for regional stock and current price before ordering.
Bottom line
Buy the Backbone One (2nd Generation) for the least-fuss iPhone setup and broad documented service support. Buy the Razer Kishi V3 when USB-C, case clearance and cloud or remote play are the deciding factors. Buy the GameSir G8+ MFi when a full-size console grip is worth carrying a larger controller.
