Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe best starting point is a stable frame rate at your display’s native resolution, with ray tracing disabled unless your GPU has substantial headroom. Use DLSS or TSR in Balanced mode when native rendering misses your target, keep textures high if VRAM permits, and reduce shadows or volumetrics before sacrificing texture detail. For sound, use headphones or correctly positioned speakers, keep effects and ambience audible, and run only one spatial-audio processor. HDR must be calibrated for your own display; copied values often crush blacks or erase fog detail.
Start with a stable baseline, not the highest preset
Psychological-horror games spend much of their time in dark rooms, narrow corridors, fog, rain and other scenes where inconsistent frame time is more distracting than a lower headline preset. Establish a repeatable target first, then add quality features one at a time.

For Silent Hill 2, the 2024 Steam listing says minimum hardware is intended for Low or Medium quality at 1080p and a stable 30 frames per second (FPS). That is a documented floor for that PC release, not a universal requirement or a benchmark for every modern horror game. The same listing markets “High-end Graphics and Sound” and requires a Windows-compatible audio device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Set the game to your monitor’s native resolution and start with the High preset, or the game’s recommended preset if High is clearly beyond your hardware.
- Choose a frame-rate target your system can hold in a foggy exterior and a busy interior, not just in an empty hallway. A stable 60 FPS is a useful PC target; a locked 30 FPS is preferable to an erratic 40–70 FPS when 30 is all the hardware can sustain.
- Turn on an in-game frame limiter or use a display-synchronized cap where available. Leave a small amount of GPU headroom so traversal and streaming do not create sudden spikes.
- If the target is missed, change ray tracing first, then shadows and volumetric effects. Use DLSS or TSR Balanced before dropping the output resolution.
- Walk through the same dark exterior, fog bank and interior after every major change. Check for shimmering, smeared foliage, lost shadow shapes and stutter.
Choose a profile that matches your hardware
| Profile | Core settings | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | Native resolution, ray tracing on if the GPU has headroom, high shadows and textures, restrained upscaling | Fast GPUs targeting a consistent 60 FPS or the display’s refresh rate | Frame-time spikes in rain, fog and large outdoor areas |
| Balanced | Ray tracing off, DLSS or TSR Balanced, shadows one step below maximum, high textures when VRAM allows | Most mid-range systems and laptops | Foliage and fog for reconstruction artifacts; keep the frame cap steady |
| Performance | Ray tracing off, lower shadows and volumetrics, Balanced or a more efficient upscaling mode, display-matched cap | Systems that cannot hold the target with Balanced settings | Minimum FPS and whether reduced fog or shadow detail harms navigation |
A current third-party Silent Hill 2 PC guide recommends ray tracing off unless the system is around RTX 4070-class or better, DLSS or TSR Balanced, and shadows one notch below maximum. Treat those values as a starting point for that game and hardware class, not as a guarantee for another engine, resolution or laptop power limit.

Graphics settings, in the order they matter
Ray tracing
Ray tracing is normally the largest single performance cost on supported hardware. It can improve reflections, indirect light and contact shadow behavior, but those gains are easy to lose when the resulting frame pacing is uneven. Leave it off while establishing a baseline on a mid-range GPU. On a fast GPU, enable it only after a capped, stable target has been verified, then test the same fog-heavy and reflective scenes again.
Ray-tracing quality is an explicit performance axis in modern engines. Remedy’s 2026 Alan Wake 2 update notes, for example, document an Ultra ray-tracing level. The existence of that level does not establish a common FPS cost between games; use the in-game frame-time graph or an overlay to judge your own system.
Upscaling: DLSS and TSR
When native resolution is too expensive, DLSS or Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) in Balanced mode is the practical first change. The game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output, reducing GPU work while retaining more detail than simply lowering the display resolution.
- Inspect thin wires, tree branches, wet surfaces, smoke and moving foliage for shimmer or ghost trails.
- Compare a still scene and a slow camera pan. A mode that looks sharp when paused can break up during movement.
- If Balanced introduces visible artifacts, try a higher-quality mode at a lower cap before dropping to Performance. If the GPU remains overloaded, a more aggressive mode may be preferable to severe stutter.
Shadows and volumetric effects
Shadows define threat silhouettes and room depth, while volumetrics control fog, dust, shafts of light and weather. Lower each one step before lowering textures. Check an outdoor scene with fog and an interior with a strong light source; some games show little difference in a bright test area but lose important shapes in darkness.
If the frame rate is still unstable after ray tracing is off and upscaling is selected, reduce volumetric quality next, then shadow resolution or distance. Avoid reducing every slider at once: changing one group at a time tells you which compromise bought the frame-time improvement.

Textures and VRAM
Keep textures at High when your graphics memory can hold them. Texture quality usually changes memory use more than shader workload, so lowering it will not cure a GPU that is simply too slow. It can help when VRAM saturation causes hitching, texture pop-in or sudden drops while turning the camera.
- If stutter appears when entering new rooms while GPU utilization is moderate, lower textures one step and retest.
- Close other GPU-heavy applications and verify that the game is using the discrete GPU on a laptop.
- Do not confuse a brief shader-compilation hitch with a texture-memory problem; repeat the same route after shaders have had time to compile.
Motion blur, chromatic aberration, film grain and depth of field
These are comfort and style controls rather than major performance levers. Disable or reduce motion blur if camera movement feels smeared or causes discomfort. Chromatic aberration can soften the image at the edges; turn it down if text and navigation cues look fringed. Depth of field may obscure a nearby interactable when the camera focuses on the wrong plane.
Film grain has little effect on frame rate but can conceal fine detail. A small amount can preserve a cinematic look; remove it when you need the cleanest view of clues, keys or environmental writing. Apply these changes after performance tuning so you do not mistake a visual preference for a performance fix.
Frame pacing, synchronization and latency
A consistent cap generally feels better than an uncapped number that swings widely. If your display supports variable refresh, enable the game’s compatible option and cap slightly below the panel’s maximum when the game recommends doing so. Without variable refresh, choose a cap your system can maintain and test for tearing.
Upscaling mode, synchronization and the frame cap interact. A lower render resolution can increase FPS but does not automatically reduce input latency if the GPU queue remains full. Watch frame-time consistency and camera response together; the fastest average FPS is not always the most responsive profile.

Calibrate HDR for your actual display
HDR is worthwhile only on a display that can genuinely accept HDR and produce useful highlight and black-level separation. Enable HDR in Windows and in the game, then run the game’s brightness or paper-white calibration with the room lighting you normally use. Panel peak brightness, local dimming behavior and black level vary widely, so another display’s numeric values are not transferable.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn on the display’s HDR mode, if it has a separate mode, and enable HDR in Windows.
- Launch the game and open its display or brightness calibration screen. Set the darkest symbol until it is barely visible rather than making every black area indistinguishable.
- Adjust paper white or mid-tone brightness so menus, walls and skin do not look grey or painfully bright in your usual room.
- Set the highlight or peak value only as high as the display can reproduce without clipping. If the game exposes no peak control, use the display’s documented HDR mode and concentrate on black-level and mid-tone checks.
- Return to a scene with dense fog and a bright lamp. Compare it with the same scene in SDR if possible. Crushed blacks, missing fog layers or clipped lamps mean calibration should be repeated.
Remedy’s official Alan Wake 2 FAQ confirms HDR support, and its 2026 update notes mention an HDR-calibration fix. Those references show that HDR behavior can change with patches; if an update alters black levels or brightness, revisit calibration instead of assuming your previous values remain correct.
Set up audio for quiet cues and direction
Psychological horror relies on sounds that are deliberately close to silence: a footstep behind a wall, a pipe settling, a door latch or a voice outside the camera’s view. Headphones make those cues easiest to place. A properly positioned stereo or surround speaker system can work, but keep the listening position centered and avoid placing one speaker behind furniture or a wall.
- Select the correct output device in Windows and in the game. Confirm that the game is not sending audio to a monitor, controller or disconnected interface.
- Set master volume below clipping, then raise effects and ambience until footsteps, room tone and environmental movement are clear at your normal listening level.
- Lower music only when it masks those cues. Do not assume a louder master mix creates more detail; clipping removes it.
- Choose the game’s headphone, stereo or speaker option that matches your physical setup.
- Keep one spatialization layer active. Use the game’s own binaural or surround processing, or Windows spatial audio or a headset virtual-surround mode, but not several at once unless the game explicitly documents that combination.
Konami confirms that audio options in Silent Hill 2 are changed from the in-game settings menu. Epic’s official troubleshooting guidance for Alan Wake 2 likewise starts with checking in-game audio settings when sound misbehaves. These checks should come before reinstalling or changing graphics.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
- Pause the game and disable Windows spatial audio for the selected output device, then retest. If it was already off, disable the headset or sound-card virtual-surround mode instead.
- Verify the Windows default output and the game’s selected output are the same physical device. Disconnect unused HDMI, Bluetooth and controller outputs temporarily.
- Check the device format in Windows and use a standard supported sample rate. Avoid changing several enhancement settings simultaneously.
- Turn off extra equalizer, reverb, “room,” or communication enhancements supplied by the driver or headset software.
- Retest with the game’s own spatial option enabled by itself, then with it disabled and the operating-system option enabled by itself. Keep the cleaner, better-localized result.
- If delay remains, test wired headphones or speakers. Bluetooth buffering can add latency even when the game and Windows settings are correct.
The current third-party Silent Hill 2 guide reports echo-like delay associated with Windows spatial audio, but labels that observation anecdotal. Use it as a troubleshooting lead, not proof that every system has the same fault.
Match the profile to the problem you can see
| Symptom | First change | Why | Follow-up check |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPU usage is near maximum and frame time spikes | Disable ray tracing | RT is usually the highest-cost switch | Retest a reflective exterior and a dark interior |
| Stable performance until fog or rain appears | Lower volumetrics one step | Fog and weather can be expensive in horror scenes | Check whether silhouettes and navigation remain clear |
| Camera turns cause texture pop-in or hitching | Lower textures one step | VRAM saturation can trigger streaming stalls | Repeat the same route after loading |
| Image shimmers around foliage or wires | Use a higher-quality DLSS/TSR mode | Temporal reconstruction is producing unstable detail | Compare a slow pan, not only a still screenshot |
| Blacks hide doors or fog loses layers | Re-run HDR calibration | Black level or paper-white is mismatched | Compare the same scene in SDR |
| Sound is doubled, hollow or late | Disable one spatial-audio layer | Stacked processing can create echo and delay | Test the game, Windows and wired output separately |
What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
The documented 1080p/30 FPS Low-or-Medium target for Silent Hill 2 is useful for checking whether a minimum-spec PC is in the right range. It does not predict 60 FPS at High, ray-traced performance, laptop results, console modes or behavior in another psychological-horror game. No independent benchmark table or universal FPS figure applies across all modern games in this genre, because engines, patches, resolutions and scene loads differ.
Use the title’s own recommended settings as the first reference, then measure your system in representative scenes. Record the frame cap, resolution, upscaler mode, ray-tracing state and display mode when troubleshooting. That makes a later patch or driver change easier to evaluate than relying on a single maximum-FPS number.
A short pre-play checklist
- Native output resolution selected.
- Stable cap chosen and tested in fog, rain and interiors.
- Ray tracing off until the baseline is proven.
- DLSS or TSR Balanced enabled when native rendering misses the target.
- Shadows and volumetrics reduced before textures.
- Textures kept high unless VRAM-related stutter appears.
- Motion blur, chromatic aberration, grain and depth of field adjusted for comfort.
- HDR enabled only on a real HDR display and calibrated in the normal room.
- Headphones or correctly positioned speakers selected as the output.
- Only one spatial-audio processor active.
Bottom line
Build around frame-time consistency and clear environmental audio. Start at native resolution with a High or recommended preset, turn ray tracing off while testing, use DLSS or TSR Balanced when needed, and trim shadows or volumetrics before textures. Calibrate HDR per display, not by copying numbers. For echo or delay, verify the Windows output path and remove stacked spatial processing before touching graphics settings.
