This curated list treats those as distinct styles rather than pretending they are interchangeable. It highlights the modern simulations with documented features and places the Cabela’s series in its historical context; it does not claim a definitive cross-era ranking or current availability for legacy editions.
To choose between them, compare the kind of prey and pace you want, how the game handles tracking and shot feedback, and whether its world is built around reserves, missions, or trophy progression. Store availability and compatibility should be checked for the specific game and platform before buying.

How to read this list
These picks are organized by hunting style and the qualities that make each relevant, not ranked as a universal 1–10. The available evidence supports detailed feature descriptions for two contemporary wildlife simulations and historical context for Cabela’s; it does not establish ten entries with verified platform histories and current availability. Rather than inventing those details, this guide focuses on identifiable choices and explains where the evidence is limited.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Arcade or action hunting: a faster, more mission-driven approach associated here with Cabela’s titles.
- Fantasy creature hunting: a separate interpretation in which the quarry is fictional. It should not be confused with wildlife simulation.
Modern wildlife hunting simulations
theHunter: Call of the Wild
theHunter: Call of the Wild is presented by its official site as an atmospheric, open-world hunting game. Its base-game page describes reserves, equipment, weapon packs, and trophy lodges, alongside both paid and free content. That makes it a natural choice for players drawn to exploring hunting grounds and building a collection of equipment and trophies rather than simply moving through a short sequence of action missions.
#1 Best Overall
- Multiple modes allow players to jump in or play for hours at higher difficulty levels. Cabela's: The Hunt offers modes for casual & dedicated players - Quick Hunt, Season Hunt & Cabela's Challenges. Gun is not included
- Adding authenticity, once the hunter finds the target, many factors come into play before pulling the trigger: range, scent, stalking ability, and more.
- Players' arsenal includes rifles, shotguns, side arms, & bows as well as a variety of calls, scents, blinds, decoys, scopes, an ATV, & state-of-the-art GPS mapping technology to aid in their hunt.
- Hunters will have ten beautiful realistic expansive environments to explore, each filled with a variety of prey, dangerous animals, hidden landmarks, and fun quick-action missions.
- Hunting Locations: Washington, Georgia, Wyoming, Maine, Missouri, New Mexico, Minnesota, Florida, Alberta, Alaska.
The content model is worth considering: the base game sits alongside additional content, and the official information describes both paid and free additions. Check the current store listing for what is included with the edition you are considering; this guide does not recommend a particular expansion or assume every add-on is currently available in every region.
Way of the Hunter
Way of the Hunter emphasizes interpreting animal signs and assessing the result of a shot. Its official description highlights blood-splatter analysis and a rewindable bullet-camera review; the PlayStation listing repeats key hunting features. The game also includes an in-game economy.
Rank #2
- Experience a realistic hunting adventure: Over 36 different animals of all sizes located in their natural habitats; hunt in one of 3 major regions, comprised of multiple sub regions for tons of variety and content
- Partner with your Dog companion: Introducing a brand-new hunting Dog mechanic to assist you on your hunt; command your dog to track, freeze, follow and more
- Track down 33 animal species in their natural environment by using the best hunting techniques.
- Enjoy the best of hunting brands: Using all licensed gear from top hunting brands around the world; customize your player with over 160 weapons, accessories and clothing items from the best brands, including Browning, Winchester, Bushnell, Kryptek and Verney-Carron.
- Explore the plains of Colorado, the Texan desert and the forests of Europe in vast open worlds.
Those feedback systems offer a distinct contrast to a hunting game focused mainly on action: they make observation and reviewing a shot part of the play. If you want a game that draws attention to how you tracked and hit an animal, Way of the Hunter is a particularly clear fit. Its official site summarizes the approach as: “Hunt like a pro with features that highlight animal signs, blood splatter analysis, and shot review with the rewindable bullet camera.”

Classic Cabela’s hunting games
Cabela’s Big Game Hunter
Cabela’s Big Game Hunter is a key historical series for players seeking an action-oriented alternative to modern open-world simulations. Activision’s release announcement for Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2012 documented the game and its planned platforms at the time. That is useful historical context, not confirmation that those editions remain in stock, work on current hardware, or are available in a particular region.

Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts
Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2011 appears in Metacritic’s hunting-game index, which provides category context rather than an authoritative all-time ranking. Like Big Game Hunter, it belongs here as a historical series example for readers interested in a more action-focused interpretation of hunting.
For either Cabela’s series, treat platform and purchase details as edition-specific. Historical release information does not establish present-day compatibility or store availability; check the listing for the exact title and system before making a buying decision.
Rank #4

What about fantasy monster-hunting games?
Some players use “hunting game” broadly enough to include games about tracking and fighting fictional creatures. That is a reasonable genre-adjacent interest, but it is not the same activity as hunting wildlife in a simulation or arcade hunting game. The available evidence here does not establish a specific fantasy title as part of this list’s scope, so it would be misleading to quietly count one as a wildlife hunting game. If fantasy hunts are what you mean, compare those games separately by creature tracking, combat, and progression rather than by realism in animal behavior or shot feedback.

| If you want… | Start with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| An atmospheric open world and trophy progression | theHunter: Call of the Wild | Its official material describes open-world hunting, reserves, equipment, and trophy lodges. |
| Visible feedback on tracking and shot results | Way of the Hunter | Its official material highlights animal signs, blood-splatter analysis, and rewindable shot review. |
| A historical, action-oriented hunting series | Cabela’s Big Game Hunter or Dangerous Hunts | Both are relevant Cabela’s series examples, but current edition availability and compatibility need title-by-title checking. |
| Fictional creatures rather than wildlife | Look for fantasy hunting games as a separate category | Fantasy creature hunts use a different premise and should not be presented as realistic wildlife simulation. |
Before choosing, decide whether you want patient tracking or faster action, whether you value detailed shot feedback, and how much additional content you are willing to evaluate. For older games, confirm the exact platform and edition in a current store or compatibility listing; a past release announcement or genre index cannot answer that question.
