It does not mean every game below debuted in 2025. iPhone and iPad recommendations are separated because screen size, controls and hardware requirements can change the experience substantially.
Apple’s 2025 App Store Awards are a useful editorial signal, not a complete ranking. Apple chose winners from 45 finalists; Pokémon TCG Pocket won iPhone Game of the Year, DREDGE won iPad Game of the Year, and WHAT THE CLASH? won Apple Arcade Game of the Year. Apple’s announcement and its finalist list provide the starting point here, broadened with premium ports and touch-first indies.

Best iPhone game: Pokémon TCG Pocket
Apple named Pokémon TCG Pocket its 2025 iPhone Game of the Year. Its appeal is a compact loop of collecting cards, building decks and playing short matches, a structure that suits an iPhone better than a sprawling action game. The official listing is here.
- Best for: Card-game fans and players who prefer brief sessions.
- Why it fits iPhone: Menus, battles and collection tasks are designed around quick touch interactions.
- Trade-off: It is not a premium purchase. Collection systems and optional purchases should be treated separately from the quality of the battles.
- Check before installing: The current listing for internet requirements, supported operating-system versions and purchase details.
Best iPad game: DREDGE
DREDGE combines fishing, exploration, inventory management and horror. Apple selected it as 2025 iPad Game of the Year, and Apple’s design coverage specifically highlights its touch and controller interaction. See the App Store listing and Apple’s Design Awards coverage.

#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Best for: Players wanting a complete-feeling premium adventure on a larger screen.
- Why iPad helps: Maps, equipment layouts and exploration details are easier to read on a tablet.
- Controls: Touch is viable; a supported controller is useful if you prefer traditional movement and camera input.
- Trade-off: Verify whether the current purchase includes the content you want or offers expansions separately. “Best iPad game” does not mean it is unsuitable for iPhone.
Best compact strategy game: Thronefall
Thronefall was an iPhone Game of the Year finalist. Its minimalist presentation combines base building and defensive battles without the interface overload found in larger strategy games. Apple’s finalist description is available in the announcement; confirm its release status and current purchase model on the App Store.
Choose it for short, repeatable sessions and touch-friendly commands. On a smaller iPhone, inspect screenshots and accessibility settings before buying: battlefield readability is more important here than raw graphical detail.
Best card roguelike: Balatro
Balatro turns poker hands, solitaire-like scoring and deck-building into a highly replayable roguelike. Apple’s 2025 Design Awards page describes that combination as deliberately calibrated around escalating risk and chaos. It is a 2025 standout, not automatically a 2025 release, so describe it as such unless the current App Store history establishes a 2025 launch. The iOS listing is available here.
It is an excellent fit for one-handed play and short commutes. Its compulsive loop is also the central caveat: players looking for a finite campaign may prefer DREDGE or another narrative game.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
Best free-to-start adventure: Infinity Nikki
Infinity Nikki was an iPad Game of the Year finalist alongside DREDGE and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It offers a large, whimsical adventure rather than a compact premium campaign. Apple’s finalist description is in the finalist announcement; the current United States listing is here.
- Best for: Players who want an ongoing world, exploration and character customization.
- Business model: Free to download, with live-service currencies and randomized or gacha-style systems that must be evaluated on the current listing and in-game flow.
- Hardware caveat: Large 3D worlds can demand more storage, battery and sustained performance than card or puzzle games. Check the exact supported models before downloading.
- Who should skip it: Anyone seeking a self-contained purchase with no recurring events or online dependence.
Best Apple Arcade game: WHAT THE CLASH?
Apple named WHAT THE CLASH? its 2025 Apple Arcade Game of the Year. It is a collection of silly competitive mini-games aimed at quick rounds and group play. The App Store listing should be checked for current device, offline and multiplayer requirements.
Arcade changes the value calculation: access depends on an Apple Arcade subscription rather than an individual game purchase. Confirm whether everyone joining a multiplayer session needs access and whether the game remains playable offline after initial setup.
Indie and design standouts
Thank Goodness You’re Here!
Apple’s Design Awards coverage highlights Thank Goodness You’re Here! for its unusual comedy, short-form structure and polished presentation. It is a strong recommendation for players who value voice, animation and writing over dozens of hours of progression. Verify its current iPhone/iPad listing before treating it as an iOS release, and do not promise extensive replay value for a compact narrative comedy.

Land of Livia
Apple describes Land of Livia as supporting VoiceOver, Dynamic Type and haptics, with design aimed at blind and low-vision players. Those are specific features, not proof that every part of the game is accessible. Consult the developer’s documentation and the current listing for the exact supported settings. Apple’s source is the 2025 Design Awards page.
puffies.
puffies. is another Apple Design Awards accessibility and design candidate. Treat Apple’s recognition as a reason to investigate, then name only the accessibility features confirmed by the listing or developer documentation rather than calling the game universally accessible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Blockbuster ports: impressive, but check the platform first
Major ports can demonstrate what Apple silicon can do, but a Mac award or finalist mention does not establish iPhone or iPad support. Apple named Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition Mac Game of the Year and included Assassin’s Creed Shadows among Mac finalists. Those games belong in an Apple-platform discussion unless their current iPhone/iPad listings confirm mobile versions. Apple’s relevant awards evidence is in the winner announcement and finalist announcement.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is the safer mobile-port recommendation because Apple placed it among iPad finalists. Still, check the exact device list, download size, frame-rate options, controller support and whether the complete game or a trial is being offered.

How to choose between iPhone and iPad
- Choose iPhone for card games, compact strategy and short sessions. Direct touch input and portability matter more than maximum resolution.
- Choose iPad for maps, inventory-heavy adventures, large 3D worlds and games whose text or interface feels cramped on a phone.
- Use a controller for action-heavy ports, precise camera control and long sessions. It is less useful for card, puzzle and touch-first games.
- Check hardware individually: minimum iPhone/iPad model, iOS or iPadOS version, Apple-chip requirement, storage and controller support all belong to the specific App Store listing. Do not infer compatibility from an Apple award.
Monetization and value checklist
“Free” normally means free to download, not free of purchases. Before installing, identify whether a game uses a premium unlock, ads, randomized collectibles, battle passes, recurring events, paid expansions or an Apple Arcade subscription. Also check whether progress is time-gated, whether purchases affect competition, whether an account is required and whether offline play works after setup.
What the 2025 awards do—and do not—prove
Apple’s awards establish editorial recognition in named categories. They do not provide review scores, sales figures, completion data, independent performance testing or a guarantee of long-term updates. A technically spectacular port may be a poor fit for an older device, while a small game can be the better iPhone experience because it was designed around touch and short sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does “iOS game of 2025” mean the game first released in 2025?
No. This list includes 2025 iPhone or iPad launches, major ports, Apple Arcade releases and older games that became notable through 2025 recognition or updates. Each recommendation is labeled or qualified accordingly.
Are Apple’s Mac Game of the Year nominees iPhone games?
Not necessarily. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and Assassin’s Creed Shadows were recognized in Apple’s Mac category. Their Mac recognition does not prove iPhone or iPad availability; check the current mobile App Store listing.
The Bottom Line
For an iPhone-first free game, start with Pokémon TCG Pocket. Choose DREDGE for a premium iPad adventure, Balatro for repeatable card play, Thronefall for compact strategy and WHAT THE CLASH? if you already use Apple Arcade. Treat large ports as hardware-specific purchases: confirm the exact device, storage, controls and business model before downloading.
