For the simplest official way to play classic SNES games on current Nintendo hardware, download the Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics app on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 and use an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If you want a standalone mini-console, the Super NES Classic Edition has a fixed preinstalled lineup; for original cartridge play, you need original SNES hardware and compatible authentic cartridges. None of these routes guarantees access to every SNES game.
Which SNES route fits you?
| Route | What you get | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online Super NES Nintendo Classics | A downloadable app with a selected SNES library on Switch-family systems | Convenient play on current Nintendo hardware | Requires an active membership; access to the library stops while membership is inactive, and offline play requires periodic online verification. Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo support. |
| Super NES Classic Edition | A separate mini-console with games preinstalled | A standalone device with its particular built-in lineup | The lineup is fixed; you cannot add games or use original SNES cartridges and controllers. Nintendo support. |
| Original SNES and authentic cartridges | Original console hardware and physical game media | Playing on original hardware with cartridges | You need compatible working hardware and authentic cartridges; check condition and region compatibility when buying used. Nintendo consumer guidance. |
| Title-specific eShop releases or packaged collections | Official digital releases or licensed collections, where offered | Seeking a particular game outside the subscription library | Availability varies by title, platform, publisher, and region; check the specific game. Nintendo support. |
Choose by the exact game you want, whether you want a subscription or a one-time physical purchase, and whether original hardware matters to you. The catalogs are different, and no route here is established as containing every SNES game.
Play through Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo’s official subscription library is the most straightforward current option if you already use a Switch or Switch 2. Nintendo says the standard Nintendo Switch Online tier includes NES, Super NES, and Game Boy classics; the Expansion Pack is not required for the SNES library. The classic-games app is downloaded separately from the membership itself. Check Nintendo’s current membership details for your region before subscribing, as plan wording and availability can change. Nintendo Switch Online
- Open Nintendo eShop on your Switch-family system.
- Select a user with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Find the Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics app and download it.
- Open the app and choose from the available SNES titles.
Membership and offline play
Nintendo requires an active membership to access the classics. You can play offline, but the console must connect to the internet at least once every seven consecutive days so membership can be verified. If the membership lapses, access to the library is unavailable until it is renewed; Nintendo says save data remains. Nintendo describes online play for compatible games as play with friends, not random matchmaking. Nintendo support

Use the Super NES Classic Edition for its fixed lineup
The Super NES Classic Edition is a separate mini-console, not an adapter for an existing cartridge collection. Nintendo’s US support list names 21 built-in games, including Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound, Donkey Kong Country, Contra III: The Alien Wars, Final Fantasy III, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The complete lineup is listed by Nintendo. Super NES Classic Edition game list

Play original cartridges on original hardware
For cartridge play, use an original Super Nintendo Entertainment System with authentic compatible SNES cartridges. A Super NES Classic Edition will not play those cartridges. When considering used equipment, check that the console and cartridge work, that their region compatibility suits your setup, and that the seller can substantiate authenticity.

Nintendo says licensed accessories and peripherals carry its Official Nintendo Licensed Product seal and directs consumers to official channels for authentic products. That guidance is not an authentication of a particular used listing or a guarantee about the condition of second-hand hardware. Nintendo consumer information

The clearest supported distinction is between playing an officially distributed version and downloading an unauthorized copy. Nintendo opposes piracy and points users toward official channels. Its guidance does not establish a universal legal rule for every country or settle every question about preservation, backups, emulators, or resale. Owning a cartridge alone should not be treated as proof that downloading a ROM is lawful; rules depend on jurisdiction and circumstances. Nintendo piracy and authenticity guidance

Nintendo says it currently has no plans to bring classic games together again under the Virtual Console banner and no plans to sell the Switch classics library games individually outside Nintendo Switch Online. It also identifies eShop releases and packaged collections as other possible formats, so check the exact title, platform, publisher, and region rather than assuming an individual game is unavailable or included in a subscription.
