SNES games can look softer, sharper, blockier, stretched, or less stable on a modern TV because their original analog video has to be interpreted and scaled for a fixed-pixel screen. The result depends on the console’s video connection, the TV’s processing, and any scaler between them. No single modern-TV picture is universal.
Why the same SNES game looks different on a flat-panel TV
Modern TVs have to scale the picture
A flat-panel TV is built from a fixed grid of pixels. The SNES sends a much lower-resolution analog picture, so the TV or an external scaler must map that picture onto the screen’s grid. Different processing can make edges look soft or jagged, pixels appear uneven, or details seem more block-like. A dedicated retro scaler performs that conversion before sending a digital signal such as HDMI to the TV.
A CRT presents the signal differently
Original CRT televisions create an image through a different physical display process from LCD and OLED panels. The characteristic CRT impression includes the way the picture’s lines and neighboring colors blend, not just dark horizontal gaps. A 2014 conference-proceedings paper discusses visible line spacing in low-resolution progressive images on CRTs as technical context; it is not a specification for SNES hardware. A scanline filter imitates only part of the CRT presentation, so it cannot make a flat panel physically identical to a CRT.
The signal path and screen shape matter
Composite, S-Video, component, and RGB/SCART are different ways to carry video. Which one is available depends on the console revision and cable, and the TV or scaler must accept that signal. TVs also handle older signals differently; reports of deinterlacing artifacts, lag, or other problems are anecdotes, not a guarantee that a particular issue affects every TV.

Aspect ratio can make a stable picture look wrong: stretching a game across a widescreen display distorts its proportions. A 4:3 presentation is generally the sensible starting point. Nintendo documents 4:3 and Pixel Perfect options for the Super NES Classic, but those mode names describe that system’s display options; they do not establish one universally correct pixel setting for every original SNES game and display chain.
Ways to improve the picture
| Setup | What it changes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct connection to a compatible TV input | The TV processes the console’s analog signal. | Whether the TV accepts the exact signal, its aspect-ratio and picture-processing controls, and perceived lag. |
| Dedicated retro scaler | Converts and scales the analog source, then sends a digital signal such as HDMI. | Supported input type, output format, latency-related features, and whether you prefer a sharper or softer image. |
| Different analog cable | May provide a different signal path when the console and receiving device both support it. | Exact SNES revision and cable compatibility, plus the TV or scaler’s available inputs. A cable alone does not perform the scaling a fixed-pixel screen requires. |
| CRT or CRT-style filter/profile | Moves the presentation toward a softer, line-structured vintage look. | Whether authenticity or convenience matters more to you; a filter is an approximation. |
Choosing a scaler
Match the scaler to both ends of the chain: it must accept the SNES’s actual output and provide a format the TV accepts. Do not assume that a device described simply as an HDMI converter will handle 240p correctly.

For concrete examples, RetroTINK’s 5X Pro product page lists composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART inputs; support for 240p and other standard-definition formats; and output up to 1080p for connection to an HDTV. Its 4K product page describes analog inputs, pixel-perfect scaling, CRT simulation, and output up to 4K60. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not independent comparative test results or a recommendation for every setup.
RetroTINK’s 2X article explains line doubling and illustrates an SNES-to-scaler path using a component cable. It also notes that some image differences after a TV rescales the result may not be noticeable to every viewer.

What to check when the picture looks wrong
- If the game looks stretched: check the TV’s aspect-ratio setting and try a 4:3 presentation where available.
- If you are using original hardware and the TV has no suitable input: look for a scaler that explicitly supports the console’s signal format and provides an output the TV accepts.
- If you are choosing a cable: verify compatibility with the exact SNES revision and the scaler or display input. Changing cables does not replace scaling.
- If softness, motion artifacts, or lag remain: the TV’s handling of that input may be contributing. The relevant controls and results vary by model, so advice depends on the TV’s make and model.
Game Mode is often suggested in community discussions, but there is no basis here to promise that it is the right setting or produces the same result on every TV.

There is a trade-off between a crisp, clearly separated pixel look and the softer blended appearance associated with CRTs. Compare supported inputs, aspect ratio, sharpness, output resolution, and the processing features relevant to your setup. If your goal is a CRT-like image, a filter or scaler profile can approximate aspects of it; if you prefer distinct pixels, choose processing that preserves their edges. Neither preference is a universal standard, and a scaler cannot turn an LCD or OLED into a CRT.
