For protection, choose between a slim handheld case with a screen protector and a larger case that carries the dock and TV-play cables. The console already includes the Switch 2 Dock, AC adapter, USB-C cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, so a second dock or adapter is optional rather than required.
These recommendations are organized around the jobs accessories perform: storing downloaded games, keeping the display and console safe, charging at home or away, and transporting a complete TV setup.

What comes with Nintendo Switch 2, and what is optional
A new Nintendo Switch 2 package already contains the hardware needed for handheld charging and TV play: the Switch 2 Dock, an AC adapter, a USB-C charging cable and an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. You do not need to buy any of those items simply to start playing on a television.
Optional purchases solve specific situations:
- A microSD Express card adds storage for downloaded games and other data.
- A screen protector reduces the risk of scratches and display damage during daily use or docking.
- A carrying case protects the console. The right size depends on whether you transport only the handheld or the complete dock setup.
- A Dock Set is useful for a second television, a permanent setup in another room, or replacing a damaged or lost dock and its associated cables.
- A replacement AC Adapter is useful when the original is lost, damaged or permanently installed in another location.
Storage: buy a microSD Express card, not a standard microSD
Why the format matters
Nintendo Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards for expandable game storage. Nintendo describes microSD Express as the standard of expandable memory for the system and notes that it provides faster data transfer than a conventional microSD card. A card that worked in the original Nintendo Switch is therefore not a valid game-storage recommendation for Switch 2, even if its capacity and physical shape look identical.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
The console has 256GB of internal storage. Nintendo specifies microSD Express expansion of up to 2TB, giving you room for a larger digital library without deleting games as often. Capacity is only useful when the card uses the required Express standard; do not substitute a cheaper, ordinary microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card.
The clearest official choice
Nintendo’s catalog lists the Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB. It is the straightforward choice when you want a card identified for Switch 2 rather than trying to interpret the speed markings on a general-purpose memory card. Use the phrase “Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express card” when checking listings, and confirm that the product description explicitly says microSD Express.
Choosing capacity
| Capacity decision | Who it suits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB microSD Express | Players who buy a mix of physical and digital games | Lower upfront capacity than larger cards, so you may archive large downloads sooner |
| Larger microSD Express card | Players with a mostly digital library or frequent large downloads | Higher cost; remain within Nintendo’s supported maximum of 2TB |
| No card initially | Players using mostly cartridges and the internal 256GB storage | You can add a compatible card later, but a conventional card cannot be repurposed for Switch 2 game storage |
Installing and managing the card
- Turn the console completely off rather than leaving it in sleep mode.
- Open the microSD card slot according to the Switch 2 hardware guide and insert the microSD Express card in the orientation shown by the slot markings.
- Start the console and follow any on-screen formatting or setup prompt. Formatting removes existing data on the card, so use a new card or back up anything important first.
- Open the system’s storage-management settings to confirm that the card is recognized before downloading a large game.
- Keep the card in the console while software is being downloaded, updated or moved. Removing it during a write can corrupt data.
If the system reports that a card is unsupported, first check the label and retailer listing for the words microSD Express. Reinsert it with the console powered off, then test the card again. A conventional Switch card will not become compatible through formatting.

Charging and TV play: use the Switch 2 power path
The original Switch dock and adapter are not substitutes
The original Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Nintendo also states that the original Switch AC adapter cannot provide Switch 2 TV mode because its power output differs. You may be able to encounter physical similarities between plugs and ports, but that does not make the older dock-and-adapter combination an appropriate TV-play solution.

- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
For TV mode, connect the Switch 2 console to the Switch 2 Dock and use the adapter supplied for Switch 2. The included Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable connects the dock to a compatible television or AV receiver. Switch 2 supports TV output up to 4K at 60 frames per second when the game, display and connection support that mode.
When a Dock Set makes sense
The Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set contains a dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. It is intended for a second-TV setup or as a replacement, not as a mandatory upgrade for the console package. Nintendo describes the value of an extra dock as making it easier to set up a second television in the house.
A second set is practical when one dock remains permanently connected in a living room and another stays in a bedroom, office or travel location. It also reduces cable swapping and the chance of leaving a required cable behind. If your original dock is working and you use one television, the extra set adds convenience rather than capability.

The Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter replaces the adapter included with the system. It can connect directly to the console for charging or to the dock for TV play. Buy one if the original is lost or damaged, or if you want a dedicated charger at another location. It is not a replacement for the dock when you need television output.

Basic TV setup checklist
- Place the Switch 2 Dock near the television with ventilation around it.
- Connect the Switch 2 AC Adapter to the dock’s power input and to a suitable outlet.
- Connect the Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable from the dock to an HDMI input on the television.
- Select that HDMI input on the television.
- Insert the console into the dock and wait for the TV signal. If the picture does not appear, check the input selection, both cable ends and the dock’s power connection before changing accessories.
Screen protection: glass versus the official slim bundle
Best standalone protector: Belkin Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective
TechRadar’s 2026 Switch 2 accessory guide names the Belkin Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective Screen Protector its best Switch 2 screen protector. Its advantages are the tempered-glass construction, resistance to everyday scratches and an anti-reflective treatment intended to reduce glare. The review also discusses the application process, which matters because dust or a misaligned edge can be more annoying than the original risk you were trying to prevent.
Check that packaging identifies the protector for Switch 2 rather than the original Switch. Before application, wash and dry your hands, work in a low-dust room, clean the display thoroughly, align the protector using its supplied guide if included, and press from the center outward to chase bubbles toward the edge. Do not lift and reapply repeatedly after dust has reached the adhesive; follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and removal instructions instead.
Best official slim option: Carrying Case & Screen Protector
Nintendo’s Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector combines a handheld case with a protector in one official bundle. It is the sensible choice for commuting, school bags and short trips where you carry the console and perhaps a few game cards, but not a dock and full set of cables. The bundle does not include the console or controllers, so those remain separate purchases or items you already own.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose this bundle when low bulk matters more than carrying TV hardware. If you frequently put the console into a bag with keys, chargers or other hard objects, use the case consistently even after installing the protector; glass protects the display surface, while a case protects edges, controls and the rest of the handheld.

Cases: handheld travel or a complete TV setup
Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case
The official Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case is sized for the console, Switch 2 Dock, Joy-Con 2 controllers, cables and up to six game cards. It is the better fit for hotel trips, tournaments or family visits where you expect to play both handheld and docked. Its larger footprint is the unavoidable trade-off for carrying the power adapter, HDMI cable and dock without improvising separate bags.
Pack the dock so its screen-facing surfaces are not pressed directly against loose accessories. Route cables into their dedicated compartments, secure the controllers, and use the game-card slots rather than allowing cartridges to move around the main console compartment.
Nacon Protection Case XL
TechRadar describes the Nacon Protection Case XL as a large case with room for the handheld, dock, games and cables. It is an alternative for readers who want a third-party full-setup case rather than Nintendo’s official model. Availability varies by region, so verify that it is sold in your country and that the interior dimensions are labeled for Switch 2 before ordering.
Which case should you choose?
| Your travel pattern | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily handheld carry, minimal weight | Carrying Case & Screen Protector | Protects the console and display without the volume of a dock case |
| Travel that includes TV play | All-In-One Carrying Case | Designed for the dock, controllers, cables and up to six game cards |
| Third-party large-case preference | Nacon Protection Case XL | Large layout for handheld, dock, games and cables; regional stock must be checked |
| Console only in a backpack | Any snug, Switch 2-specific handheld case | Avoids dock-case bulk, but leaves TV equipment to a separate bag |
Match accessories to how you play
Mostly digital games
Start with a microSD Express card. The internal 256GB storage may be sufficient for a small library, but digital installations and updates can consume space quickly. Select 256GB if you buy selectively; choose a larger supported card, up to 2TB, if you want to keep many large titles installed.

- DYNAMIC THERMAL GUARD: Keeps its cool even when the action heats up. Dynamic Thermal Guard helps reduce overheating for fast, smooth gameplay.
- ALL YOUR GAMES ON ONE TINY CARD: Store all your games and downloadable content (DLCs) with up to 512GB of reliable storage. No deleting. No compromises.
- 6-PROOF PROTECTION WITH 3-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY: Built to last, made for peace of mind. Anything can happen when you’re gaming on the go. With 6 types of protection²⁻⁹, the P9 Express can handle it all—helping maintain your game progress.
- NEXT-GEN AND BACKWARD COMPATIBLE: Your microSD Express card is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2¹⁰ and microSD UHS-I¹¹ devices, including tablets, drones, cameras and more.
Mostly physical cartridges
A microSD Express card is still useful for updates, downloadable expansions and digital games, but it can wait if internal storage covers your immediate needs. Prioritize a screen protector and a slim case if the console will travel often.
Two televisions
Keep the included dock connected to the television you use most and add a Switch 2 Dock Set for the second room. This avoids repeatedly moving the dock, adapter and HDMI cable and keeps each TV location ready.
Frequent travel with docked play
Use the All-In-One Carrying Case or a regionally available Nacon Protection Case XL. A slim handheld case cannot safely carry the dock, power adapter, controllers and HDMI cable as one organized kit.

Add a replacement AC Adapter only when you need another charging location or have lost the original. Add a Dock Set when the missing or damaged component is the dock itself, or when you want a complete second-TV kit.
Compatibility checks before you buy
- Storage: The listing must say microSD Express. “High-speed,” “UHS-I” or “works with Nintendo Switch” alone does not establish Switch 2 game-storage compatibility.
- Docking: Look for “Nintendo Switch 2 Dock” or “Switch 2 Dock Set.” The original Switch dock is not compatible.
- Power: Use the Switch 2 AC Adapter for Switch 2 TV mode. The original Switch adapter’s different output cannot provide that mode.
- Cases: Confirm that the case is sized for Switch 2 and identify whether it carries only the handheld or also the dock and cables.
- Screen protectors: Confirm the model name and display fit before opening the package; original-Switch dimensions are not a safe assumption.
- Regional stock: Third-party products, including Nacon’s case, may not be sold in every market.
Battery, charging and display facts that affect accessory choices
Nintendo lists an estimated battery life of 2–6.5 hours for Switch 2 and an approximate charging time of three hours. Actual endurance varies with the game, brightness, wireless features and other settings, so a replacement adapter or second charging location improves convenience but does not change the console’s battery rating.
For TV play, Nintendo specifies output up to 4K at 60Hz. The television, HDMI input, cable path and game must all support the desired mode; buying a second dock does not upgrade a display that lacks 4K capability. The supplied Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable is already intended for the dock connection.
Quick Recap
A practical buying order
- Confirm storage needs. If you download games, choose a Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express card, with the catalog-listed Samsung 256GB card as a clear starting point.
- Protect the display. Choose Belkin’s anti-reflective tempered glass when glare reduction and glass protection are priorities, or select Nintendo’s case-and-protector bundle for a compact official solution.
- Choose the case around the equipment you carry. Use the slim case for handheld-only trips; use the All-In-One or Nacon XL case when the dock and TV cables travel too.
- Add power hardware only for a defined setup. Buy a Dock Set for a second television or a replacement dock, and an AC Adapter for a lost, damaged or separately stationed adapter.
- Check regional availability and model labeling. Confirm Switch 2 compatibility and local stock before purchasing third-party accessories.
