If you want one recommendation while waiting for GTA 6, start with Cyberpunk 2077: it is the closest modern-city substitute here, combining a dense urban map, vehicles, crime-adjacent stories, and a deep character-build system. Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 for slower, more realistic world immersion; Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic sword combat; Horizon Forbidden West for spectacular science-fiction landscapes; or Forza Horizon 6 when driving and rendering technology matter more than a character-led crime story.
Xbox currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI as “Available November 19, 2026.” That date and the platform listing can change, so check the current Xbox listing before relying on it. Rockstar’s official material places the game in Leonida, including Vice City. The five games below cannot reproduce that exact setting, but each covers a different part of the wait: modern urban density, systemic realism, cinematic action, large-scale exploration, or high-end driving visuals.

How these games compare at a glance
The best choice depends on which part of the GTA formula you want to keep. A modern city is not the same thing as a realistic ecosystem, and a beautiful driving game does not provide the same story or combat loop as an open-world action game.

1. Cyberpunk 2077: the closest modern-city substitute
Why it fits the GTA 6 wait
Cyberpunk 2077 is the natural first stop for anyone whose priority is a contemporary city. Night City is vertically built, crowded and visually aggressive, with streets, alleys, highways, clubs, markets and corporate spaces packed into a relatively concentrated urban environment. Vehicles and criminal underworld stories create the right broad mood for a player waiting to return to a modern open-world crime setting, even though the game’s science-fiction tone is much more extreme than Leonida.
The similarity is strongest at the level of atmosphere and freedom. You can move between story missions, side jobs, vehicle travel and spontaneous street encounters while improving a custom build. It is not a sandbox in which every activity follows the same rules as a Rockstar game: hacking, cyberware, dialogue choices and role-playing systems shape encounters more than traditional cover shooting does.
Graphics and technical character
Night City’s visual identity comes from contrast: bright advertisements and neon against wet pavement, dark interiors, dense traffic and illuminated skylines. Its most impressive moments are often close to the street rather than at a distant vista, where crowds, shop fronts, character faces and layered signage make the city feel inhabited. Driving through different districts also gives the map a strong sense of architectural variety.
Performance and image-quality options depend on the platform and edition. Treat screenshots or demonstrations made on high-end PCs as illustrations of what the game can look like under particular settings, not as a guarantee for every console or computer. Confirm the current graphics modes and system requirements in the store listing for your hardware.
What you actually do
- Build a role: invest in weapons, hacking, stealth, mobility or other abilities rather than playing every encounter identically.
- Follow layered stories: the main campaign is surrounded by optional jobs that develop districts, companions and factions.
- Drive and explore: cars and motorcycles connect a dense network of missions, shops and hidden locations.
- Make consequential choices: conversations and mission decisions can alter how later scenes unfold.
This is the best pick if you want a game that keeps you in a modern urban environment and gives you a lot of narrative activity per hour. It is a weaker match if your main attraction is a grounded setting, realistic law enforcement or a purely third-person action loop.
Edition and platform note
PlayStation’s official open-world recommendations list Cyberpunk 2077 for PS5. If you are shopping specifically for Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition (PS5), check the live regional listing for stock, included content and the exact edition before ordering. Availability, packaging and pricing can differ by country; no single listing should be assumed to apply everywhere.

2. Red Dead Redemption 2: the strongest slow-burn world immersion
Why it belongs on this list
Red Dead Redemption 2 is made by Rockstar, making it the most direct reference point for the studio’s approach to world-building. Its setting could hardly be more different from Vice City: this is a detailed western world of towns, wilderness, railways, farms and frontier camps rather than a modern coastal metropolis. The value of playing it while waiting is seeing how a large world can make travel, weather, wildlife and minor encounters feel meaningful.
Recommended Free Tools
The game is deliberately paced. Arthur Morgan’s journeys include long rides, conversations on horseback, camp routines and stretches in which the environment, not a mission marker, supplies the drama. That rhythm rewards patience and observation. If you want immediate access to dense city missions, it can feel slow; if you want a world that appears to operate beyond the main quest, it is the strongest choice here.
Environmental detail over spectacle
The visual achievement is not simply resolution or effects. Mud accumulates, snow changes movement and visibility, animals behave as part of an ecosystem, and settlements have distinct architecture and social rhythms. Lighting shifts across broad landscapes, while facial animation and small gestures make conversations feel staged rather than functional. The result is a world that remains interesting when you are doing very little.
Because the experience is built around a long campaign and extensive optional content, allow more time than you would for a compact action game. The most memorable scenes often emerge from unscripted travel or from taking a detour, not from rushing between objectives.
Best reasons to choose it
- You value believable wildlife, weather, travel and environmental reactions.
- You prefer a cinematic story with room for quiet scenes and character development.
- You want to study Rockstar’s world-building before the studio’s next major open-world release.
- You are comfortable with horse travel, period weapons and a slower mission cadence.
Choose something else if your priority is neon architecture, futuristic technology or frequent high-speed driving. Red Dead Redemption 2 is about immersion through accumulation: hundreds of small details reinforcing one coherent place.
3. Ghost of Tsushima: cinematic melee and readable exploration
What makes it different
Ghost of Tsushima offers a polished open-world structure without trying to imitate a modern crime sandbox. It follows a focused samurai story on an island under invasion, using swordplay, stealth and duels as its central verbs. PlayStation includes it among its open-world recommendations, and it is a strong answer for readers who mean “high-end graphics” in a cinematic, art-directed sense rather than a technically contemporary city.

- Experience the pivotal game of the Persona series faithfully remade with cutting-edge graphics, modernized quality-of-life features, and signature stylish UI.
- Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
- Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
- Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.
The map is designed to be legible. Wind, smoke, animals and other visual cues guide you toward points of interest, reducing dependence on a constantly cluttered interface. That makes exploration feel intentional: you can pause to read a landscape, then move directly into a combat encounter or a story scene.
Visual presentation
Color and composition do much of the work. Autumn leaves, tall grass, fog, snow and fields of flowers create strong silhouettes, while weather and changing light frame sword fights like scenes from a film. The landscapes are not trying to simulate every urban service or pedestrian routine; they are built to support mood, navigation and dramatic encounters.
Combat and progression
Sword combat is based on timing, stance selection and reading an opponent. Duels isolate those decisions and make the game’s visual clarity especially useful. Stealth, archery and tool upgrades provide alternatives when direct attacks are not ideal, but the combat loop remains more focused than the build-heavy systems in Cyberpunk 2077.
The game suits you if you want a complete, visually directed adventure between larger releases. It is less suitable if you need a contemporary setting, extensive vehicle play or a role-playing system built around many radically different character builds.
4. Horizon Forbidden West: science-fiction scenery and machine encounters
Why choose the Forbidden West
Horizon Forbidden West is the recommendation for players who want scale, color and discovery more than urban realism. PlayStation describes Aloy’s journey as an expedition into a far-future Earth threatened by machines and other dangers. Human settlements, ruins and wilderness are connected by a large science-fiction adventure map in which the environment itself is a major attraction.
The setting gives the game a visual range none of the other recommendations share. You can move from dense vegetation and coastlines to deserts, ruins and machine territories, with traversal tools opening routes that initially appear inaccessible. The result is a strong fit for a reader who says “amazing graphics” but means expansive scenery and creature design rather than city lights.

Machine design and combat
Machines are more than generic enemies. Scanning reveals components, weaknesses and potential resources, encouraging you to plan an attack instead of simply lowering a health bar. Bows, traps, elemental effects and other ranged options make encounters feel like tactical hunts. The combat asks you to observe an enemy’s anatomy and behavior, then exploit it.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Exploration is similarly information-driven. Scanning can expose routes, objects and points of interest, while climbing and other traversal abilities gradually expand where Aloy can go. Optional activities add context and equipment without requiring you to abandon the central expedition.
Who gets the most from it
- Players who want bright, varied landscapes rather than a single metropolitan setting.
- Players who enjoy ranged combat, preparation and identifying enemy weaknesses.
- Players who want a story-led adventure with substantial optional exploration.
- Players who appreciate a world where ancient technology and natural scenery are visually intertwined.
It will not satisfy someone specifically seeking car chases, criminal missions or a contemporary social sandbox. Its strength is the contrast between beautiful wilderness and dangerous machines.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Forza Horizon 6: the driving-first graphics showcase
When driving is the real priority
Forza Horizon 6 is the specialist choice in this group. It is for readers whose ideal wait for GTA 6 involves high-speed travel, road variety, vehicle detail and a large world to cross, rather than a long crime narrative. The festival structure gives you a succession of driving events, collecting goals and tuning decisions instead of character-led missions.
That distinction matters. You can reproduce the sensation of moving through a large, beautiful landscape at speed, but you are not getting the same kind of pedestrian exploration, gunplay or branching story. Consider it a companion to the other games, not a substitute for their campaign structures.

NVIDIA reports that, on GeForce RTX 50-series desktop GPUs, 4K at maximum settings with ray tracing can be paired with DLSS Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation. That is a conditional hardware-and-settings claim, not a universal performance promise. Your result depends on the exact GPU, processor, display, preset, resolution, frame-generation options and game updates.

If you are evaluating the game as a graphics showcase, compare like with like: use the same resolution, ray-tracing level and upscaling mode when judging screenshots or benchmarks. A lower setting on a console or older PC can still look excellent, but it is not equivalent to the RTX 50-series configuration described above.
Reasons to pick it
- You want driving to occupy most of your play time.
- You care about vehicle models, road surfaces, lighting and image quality.
- You prefer short, repeatable events to long dialogue-heavy missions.
- You have compatible PC hardware and want to experiment with ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation.
Pick another game if your definition of “games like GTA 6” requires a protagonist, crime story and on-foot city life. Forza Horizon 6 excels by narrowing its focus to the road.

| Modern city, vehicles and crime-adjacent stories | Cyberpunk 2077 | Night City provides dense urban activity, side content and a build-driven action system. | Its futuristic setting and role-playing mechanics are much more pronounced. |
| Rockstar-style environmental immersion | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Travel, wildlife, weather and character routines make the world feel continuously inhabited. | The western setting and deliberate pace replace modern-city immediacy. |
| Cinematic action and melee | Ghost of Tsushima | Readable landscapes, sword duels and film-like composition keep exploration focused. | There is little emphasis on vehicles, urban systems or modern technology. |
| Large-scale exploration and ranged combat | Horizon Forbidden West | Machine encounters, traversal and varied science-fiction scenery reward investigation. | Its wilderness and machine-hunting loop are far from a crime sandbox. |
| Driving and rendering technology | Forza Horizon 6 | It puts road travel, vehicle presentation and graphics settings first. | It does not provide an equivalent character-led crime campaign or on-foot world. |

For PS5 players
PlayStation’s open-world recommendations include Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West. Store pages can distinguish between standard, complete and upgraded editions, and regional bundles may differ. Check the current listing for the exact console version, included expansions, download size and upgrade terms. If you are specifically considering Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition (PS5), verify that the listing is for your country and that the contents match what you expect.

Use the current Xbox store page for each game rather than assuming that a title, edition or performance mode is available on every Xbox generation. The Xbox listing for GTA 6 currently shows November 19, 2026, but that is a changeable release listing, not a permanent guarantee. Availability and optimization can vary between Xbox Series X and Series S, so read the hardware-specific details.
For PC players
Check the developer’s stated system requirements and the current PC store page. Resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, upscaling and frame generation are separate choices; a game may support one without delivering the same result with another. For Forza Horizon 6, the RTX 50-series 4K maximum-settings example applies only to compatible desktop GPUs and the stated DLSS features. Do not treat it as a minimum requirement or as a promise for laptop hardware.
For every platform
- Confirm the store region, language support and edition name.
- Check whether an expansion or bonus campaign is included before comparing prices.
- Read the current performance modes for your exact console or PC configuration.
- Recheck release dates and availability close to purchase, since listings can change.
A practical playing order while waiting
If you want variety rather than five games that all compete for the same kind of time, start with Cyberpunk 2077 for the modern-city fix. Move to Red Dead Redemption 2 when you want a slower, immersive campaign. Use Ghost of Tsushima for a tighter cinematic action experience, then Horizon Forbidden West for a change to science-fiction exploration. Keep Forza Horizon 6 installed as the driving-focused option for short sessions or graphics-focused play.
Alternatively, choose only one based on your priority table. The strongest match for the phrase “games like GTA 6” is Cyberpunk 2077; the strongest match for “open-world games with amazing graphics” depends on whether you prefer urban density, natural simulation, art-directed landscapes, science-fiction machines or high-end vehicle rendering.
