Star Wars Outlaws is the closest substitute for Star Wars Genesis if your priority is unrestricted planetary travel, speeder rides, cities, and a modern third-person open-world structure. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the most accessible way to tour the entire film saga, while Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the better choice for lightsaber combat and a focused Jedi story.
Genesis itself is not a finished retail game. It is an unofficial, evolving Starfield total-conversion modlist for PC players who own the Steam version, so the three games below are practical ways to get a Star Wars fix now without waiting for a fixed launch date.

Which Star Wars game should you play first?
Choose according to the kind of freedom you want rather than the Star Wars era you prefer. The games use very different world structures:
| If you want… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Planet-to-planet roaming, speeder travel and a non-Jedi crime story | Star Wars Outlaws | It is the clearest match for a contemporary open-world Star Wars adventure. |
| A broad, low-friction tour through the movies with co-op | LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga | It covers all nine core saga episodes and more than 20 unlockable planets in a humorous, family-friendly format. |
| Lightsaber combat, Force powers and a dramatic Jedi narrative | Star Wars Jedi: Survivor | Its explorable hubs, side paths and progression-gated abilities make it a strong action adventure, but not the same kind of open world as Outlaws. |
If “open world” is non-negotiable, start with Outlaws. If you mainly want to inhabit a Jedi, choose Survivor even though its structure is more authored. If several players or younger members of a household will join, The Skywalker Saga is the safest fit.

What Star Wars Genesis actually is
Star Wars Genesis is described by iTechGuides as “a free, fan-made total-conversion modlist for the PC Steam version of Starfield.” That distinction matters: it is not a standalone licensed Star Wars release, and it is not a conventional console game you install from a store.
The project aims to transform Starfield with Star Wars-inspired planets, species, factions, ships, weapons, music, enemies, quests, lightsabers and Force abilities. Because those changes are delivered as a modlist, the underlying Starfield installation, PC platform and mod-management process remain part of the experience.
Why there is no dependable final-release date
Genesis is still being changed. Its patch notes document continuing quest rewrites, prop replacements and story changes. A feature that exists in one build can therefore be revised in another, and a promised “final” date would be speculation. Treat it as an active fan project rather than a product with a locked launch schedule.
What the PC requirement means
- You need the PC Steam version of Starfield as the base game.
- You should plan for substantial local storage: mod-heavy installations commonly require more SSD capacity than the base game alone, although no fixed Genesis capacity is established here.
- You need a mod-management workflow and the patience to follow version-specific installation instructions.
- The supplied project description does not establish an Xbox edition. Do not assume that a Starfield console copy can run Genesis.
Those requirements are why a finished game is the more convenient choice while you wait. Outlaws, The Skywalker Saga and Jedi: Survivor are distributed as conventional games, whereas Genesis adds a technical setup layer before you can play.
How the three alternatives differ
| Game | World structure | Player fantasy | Exploration and activities | Combat identity | Accessibility and tone | Platforms or setup |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Star Wars Outlaws | Open planetary regions connected by a larger adventure | Scoundrel Kay Vess with companion Nix | Distinct planets, cities, cantinas, outdoor landscapes, speeder travel, faction and contract activities | Third-person action built around a non-Jedi outlaw perspective | Cinematic crime-adventure tone | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Ubisoft+, Amazon Luna, and Windows PC through Ubisoft Store, Steam and Epic Games Store; listings can change |
| LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga | Episode-based hubs and planets rather than one continuous sandbox | An all-ages ensemble spanning the Skywalker films | More than 20 unlockable planets, character collecting, revisiting movie locations and space battles | Accessible lightsaber and character-specific action | Humorous, family-friendly and suitable for co-op | Xbox One and Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch and PC |
| Star Wars Jedi: Survivor | Explorable hubs, connected paths and side areas gated by progression | Jedi survivor Cal Kestis | Story missions, optional routes, ability-gated discoveries and build-oriented progression | Lightsaber stances, Force abilities and deliberate action-adventure combat | Darker, more focused narrative tone | EA’s product information includes current and last-generation console availability updates; verify the current listing for your platform |
| Star Wars Genesis | Starfield’s modded space-exploration framework, reshaped by fan-made content | A custom Star Wars-inspired character in a total conversion | Fan-made planets, factions, ships, quests, enemies and equipment; scope changes as patches land | Lightsabers, Force abilities and Starfield-derived systems | Unofficial, evolving and technically demanding | PC Steam Starfield modlist; requires installation and mod management |
Star Wars Outlaws: the closest direct match
StarWars.com describes Outlaws as “the first-ever open world Star Wars game.” That official positioning makes it the most straightforward answer to the question, “What can I play now that feels closest to Genesis?”

What you do in its world
You play Kay Vess, an original scoundrel, with her companion Nix. The game is built around moving through distinct planets, busy cities, cantinas and broad outdoor environments rather than following a single corridor from mission to mission. A speeder provides ground travel, giving the spaces between objectives their own purpose instead of treating every location as a small menu selection.
The story’s crime-syndicate focus also separates it from Jedi-centered games. You are not trying to reproduce a lightsaber hero’s journey; you are navigating an outlaw’s obligations, alliances and jobs. Faction and contract activities provide reasons to return to areas after the main path has opened them.

- Roaming comes first: planetary landscapes, settlements and travel are central rather than decorative backdrops.
- It offers an original viewpoint: Kay’s scoundrel identity avoids retelling the films or copying a Jedi campaign.
- It is contemporary in presentation: the third-person structure and cinematic crime-adventure tone are closer to a modern open-world game than to a hub-based action title.
- It does not require modding: you install the retail game on a supported platform instead of assembling a total-conversion list.
Who should skip it
Outlaws is a poor match if your main requirement is Force combat or a lightsaber-focused progression system. Its appeal is the freedom and identity of a non-Jedi outlaw. Players seeking a Jedi fantasy should choose Survivor, even though that means accepting a more structured world.
Where it is available
Ubisoft lists Outlaws for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Ubisoft+, Amazon Luna and Windows PC through the Ubisoft Store, Steam and Epic Games Store. Retailer and edition availability can change, so check the current platform listing before buying. It is not a substitute for Genesis if you specifically need a PC-only modding project, but it is the closest finished open-world release for most players.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga: the broadest accessible galaxy tour
The Skywalker Saga covers all nine core saga episodes and includes more than 20 unlockable planets, according to StarWars.com. It is the strongest recommendation for a household that wants recognizable movie locations, uncomplicated action and the option to play together.

How its “open world” works
The game is not one uninterrupted galaxy sandbox. Its structure is a collection of episode-linked hubs and planets that you unlock, revisit and search for collectibles and character opportunities. That design still gives you room to wander, but it serves a guided tour through the films rather than the systemic planetary roaming promised by Outlaws.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSpace battles and planet-based exploration sit alongside the main episode stories. Because characters and abilities are drawn from across the saga, returning to an earlier location with a different hero can reveal new interactions. The result is breadth and variety rather than a single protagonist’s continuous journey.
Why it is the best family and co-op option
- The humorous LEGO presentation softens the violence and makes the story approachable for mixed-age players.
- Simple controls and recognizable characters reduce the learning curve compared with a demanding action-adventure combat system.
- Two-player co-op supports a shared living-room experience on supported versions.
- All nine episodes provide a large amount of familiar story content before you begin optional collecting and revisiting.
Who should choose it
Pick The Skywalker Saga when “I want to see the whole Star Wars saga” matters more than “I want one seamless open world.” It is also the best choice when players have different ages or skill levels, or when couch co-op is a deciding factor.
Jedi: Survivor: the best Jedi adventure, not a conventional open world
Jedi: Survivor is an action adventure centered on Cal Kestis. It combines lightsaber combat, Force abilities, exploration and a narrative campaign with optional areas and progression gates. EA’s official product information remains the reference point for current platform and support updates, including last-generation console availability.
What exploration feels like
Survivor gives you broad hubs and branching paths, but access is intentionally tied to story progression and newly acquired abilities. Returning later can open routes that were previously unreachable. That creates a satisfying loop of discovery, yet it is different from Outlaws’s premise of freely ranging through large planetary regions from the outset.

- PRE-ORDER BONUS* Pre-order to get the Kessel Runner Bonus Pack including a Trailblazer spaceship cosmetic and a speeder cosmetic.
- GOLD EDITION CONTENT* Play up to three days early with the Gold Edition, which includes the base game and the season pass.**
- Explore distinct locations with bustling cities and cantinas. Race across sprawling outdoor landscapes on your speeder. Each location brings new adventures, unique challenges, and enticing rewards if you’re willing to take the risk.
- Live the high-stakes lifestyle of an outlaw. Turn any situation to your advantage with Nix by your side: fight with your blaster, overcome enemies with stealth and gadgets, or find the right moments to distract enemies and gain the upper hand.
- Take on high-risk, high-reward missions from the galaxy’s crime syndicates. Steal valuable goods, infiltrate secret locations, and outwit enemies as one of the galaxy’s most wanted. Every choice you make influences your ever-changing reputation.
Why its combat is the deciding factor
The game’s identity comes from being a Jedi. Lightsaber fighting, Force powers and the way Cal develops through the campaign are the reasons to choose it. Encounters ask you to learn timing, positioning and ability use rather than simply sightseeing. Players who want to feel the weight of a Jedi’s training will find more of that fantasy here than in either Outlaws or The Skywalker Saga.
Who should choose it
- Choose Survivor for a story-led campaign with a defined protagonist and dramatic tone.
- Choose it when combat depth and Force abilities matter more than unrestricted travel.
- Choose it if you enjoy revisiting areas after progression unlocks new paths.
Do not buy it expecting a replacement for a total-conversion sandbox. It is an authored action adventure with explorable hubs, not a planet-hopping system in the same category as Outlaws.
Which game is actually open world?
The answer depends on how strictly you use the term:
- Star Wars Outlaws is the clearest conventional open-world choice. Its design emphasizes planetary regions, settlements, outdoor travel and speeder movement.
- LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga offers broad, revisit-able hubs and many planets, but its episode-based structure keeps it closer to an accessible galaxy tour than to one seamless sandbox.
- Jedi: Survivor has sizable explorable areas and optional paths, yet progression gates and authored routes make it a hub-and-path action adventure.
- Star Wars Genesis is a modded Starfield framework whose eventual shape depends on the evolving fan project. Its open-ended potential should not be treated as a fixed, finished feature set.
This distinction prevents a common disappointment: buying a game for “open world” freedom when what you really wanted was Jedi combat, or choosing a Jedi game while expecting unrestricted speeder travel.
Choose by the experience you want tonight
You want to explore planets and travel between activities
Start with Outlaws. Its combination of distinct worlds, cities, cantinas, outdoor landscapes and speeder travel most directly answers that need. Genesis may eventually provide a more heavily customized Star Wars sandbox, but its installation and changing content make it a project rather than an immediate pick-up-and-play alternative.

You want every movie era in one game
Choose The Skywalker Saga. Its nine-episode coverage and more than 20 unlockable planets give it the widest recognizable film-saga footprint of the three finished games.
You want to master a lightsaber
Choose Survivor. Its value is the Jedi fantasy: Cal’s story, Force powers, combat decisions and exploration that expands as your abilities grow.
You need family play or couch co-op
Choose The Skywalker Saga. Its humor, straightforward action and ensemble cast make it the least demanding option for a mixed group.

You want a non-Jedi protagonist
Choose Outlaws. Kay Vess and Nix provide an original scoundrel perspective, with crime-syndicate missions replacing the familiar Jedi-versus-Sith framework.
You specifically want a fan-made PC project
Genesis is the only option in this list that is itself a total-conversion modlist. Be prepared to own Starfield on Steam, maintain enough SSD space, follow mod-management instructions and tolerate changes between patches. None of the finished games can reproduce that exact combination of customization and technical involvement.
Installation and platform realities
The practical divide is simple: the three recommended games are conventional releases, while Genesis is a PC modding project.
| Concern | Finished games | Genesis |
|---|---|---|
| Base software | Install the selected game for its supported platform. | Requires the PC Steam version of Starfield. |
| Hardware planning | Follow the platform’s current store and system requirements. | Reserve SSD capacity for the base game and mod files; the project does not establish one universal capacity figure. |
| Setup effort | Standard retail download or disc installation. | Version-sensitive modlist installation and management. |
| Content stability | Published game content, subject to normal updates. | Ongoing quest rewrites, prop replacements and story changes can alter the experience. |
| Console access | Outlaws and The Skywalker Saga list console versions; Survivor’s current availability should be checked with EA. | No Xbox compatibility is established by the project description. |
If you want to play immediately with minimal troubleshooting, use a finished release. If you enjoy configuring mods and accept an evolving build, Genesis can be a separate PC project rather than a reason to postpone playing Star Wars now.

Common decision mistakes to avoid
- Calling every explorable area “open world”: Survivor’s hubs and The Skywalker Saga’s planet menus are not identical to Outlaws’s open-world structure.
- Expecting a Jedi in Outlaws: its central fantasy is a scoundrel working through criminal factions, not a Force-trained hero.
- Expecting one continuous sandbox from LEGO: its strength is episode breadth, collectibles and accessible revisiting across many locations.
- Treating Genesis as a normal game launch: it is an unofficial modlist for Starfield on PC Steam, with technical prerequisites and changing content.
- Assuming an Xbox version of Genesis: the supplied project description only establishes the PC Steam setup.
- Relying on an old platform listing: console, PC storefront and edition availability can change, so verify the retailer or publisher page at purchase time.
The practical choice
For a direct open-world replacement, play Star Wars Outlaws. For the widest, most accessible tour of the films, play LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. For the strongest Jedi combat and story, play Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Keep Star Wars Genesis in a separate category: it is an ambitious, unofficial PC Starfield conversion that may evolve substantially before it reaches whatever form its creators ultimately pursue.
