For a manageable first playthrough, clear Worship’s Rise, then follow the main route through Cloudspire, Mt. Zhenwu, Worship’s Rise in Ruins, and Bo Capital. Treat this as a recommended route, not a mandatory sequence: exploration and branching paths can make some encounters available earlier, and a number of bosses are optional or tied to side content.
Spoilers: this route names bosses and regions throughout the game, including late-game encounters.

1. Clear Worship’s Rise first
Begin with Bai Kru, the tutorial encounter, then take the region’s natural progression through Tang Palace Maid and Master Raider—Man-eating Dhutanga. Explore side paths for Feathered Priest—Lu Bingzhang and Gluttonous Monstrosity—Lu Hongliu; their position in your personal sequence depends on when you find them. Continue to Blightweaver—Great Centipede and Reborn Treant—Soulwood, and watch for an optional second Tang Palace Maid before reaching Commander Honglan.

Guides differ in how they group optional fights and describe progression, so this order is location-oriented rather than a claim that every listed boss is required. 2. Take Cloudspire before Mt. Zhenwu
Cloudspire
Follow the Cloudspire story route through Ming General—Liu Cheng’en, Mistress of the Night—Huang Yan, and Perfect Bride—Fang Ling. General of the North—Ai Nengqi is an optional encounter, not a required stop on the story route. Mt. Zhenwu
After Cloudspire, head to Mt. Zhenwu. If you want the optional encounters, take on Bo Sorcerer and South General—Liu Wenxiu before the mandatory Fierce Tiger/Sovereign—Zhang Xianzhong. PHP.cn describes an alternate route that reaches Mt. Zhenwu earlier via a cart-barricade path, but warns that enemies there are substantially tougher—especially around Bo Sorcerer—so it is a deliberate difficulty detour, not the recommended first-run route. 3. Explore Worship’s Rise in Ruins before the mandatory boss
In Worship’s Rise in Ruins, PHP.cn lists Monstrous Toddler—Bai Kru, Nightmare Demon, Vermilion Feathers—Honglan, and Bo Magus as optional encounters, followed by mandatory The Reborn/Dragon Emperor—Zhu Youjian. Do not assume these labels apply identically across every ending or quest state; the guide’s names and progression are tied to its described route. (PHP.cn)

4. Check White-Robed Elder’s side quest in Bo Capital
Before going directly to the final mandatory boss, check whether you have met White-Robed Elder’s side-quest conditions. PHP.cn says that completing the relevant side content can open Eternal Glory—Zhao Yun and Demon of Obsession before Feathery Ambition—Xuanyangzi. If that content was neglected, its route proceeds directly to Xuanyangzi. (PHP.cn)

After defeating Zhang Xian and Fang Ling, PHP.cn reports that the Storyteller warns of a point of no return. In its account, choosing “I press ever onward” takes the player to Annalum. PowerPyx also warns that advancing through the Storyteller can block access to the first main region. Before accepting the onward choice, finish any exploration and wanted quests you care about. Because the exact sequence and consequences are guide-reported, read the prompt shown in your game rather than assuming its wording or effect is identical in every state. (PHP.cn; PowerPyx)
