The Best PS2 FPS Games, Ranked

There is no definitive PS2 FPS ranking, so this list weighs campaign, multiplayer, distinctive design, and period reviews to rank ten standout shooters.

There is no single authoritative ranking of the PlayStation 2’s best first-person shooters. This list weighs campaign strength, multiplayer value, distinctive design, technical presentation on PS2, and contemporary critical reception—not scores alone. The order is an editorial judgment, and each game earns its place for a different mix of strengths.

How this ranking works

Two different kinds of evidence help frame the choices: WatchMojo offers an editorial selection, while Vandal displays user-score ordering. Those approaches are not interchangeable, and a user score is not a critic aggregate. Period reviews add another perspective, but the available excerpts cover only some games. The ranking therefore favors a balanced case across campaign, multiplayer, design identity, and documented reception rather than treating any one list or number as definitive.

The 10 best PS2 FPS games, ranked

1. TimeSplitters 2

Best all-rounder. TimeSplitters 2 is the strongest overall pick because it sits near the center of the PS2 FPS conversation without depending on one narrow selling point. It belongs in a ranking that values both solo play and multiplayer, and it makes a particularly compelling choice for players who want a shooter with replay value beyond a single campaign. The available evidence supports its status as a core contender, though it does not establish a single definitive technical or critical verdict.

2. TimeSplitters: Future Perfect

Best for quick, distinctive action. Vandal describes Future Perfect as fast-paced, humorous, and strongly focused on multiplayer. Its displayed user score is 8.64; Vandal does not state a year on the accessed page, and the figure is a user rating rather than a critic score. It ranks just behind TimeSplitters 2 because its personality and multiplayer emphasis make it a standout, even if those qualities do not make it the best fit for every player.

#1 Best Overall
24 the Game - PlayStation 2
  • Over 100 missions, including gun fights, stealth, sniping, driving, satellite tracking, phone tracing, interrogation, and more!
  • Three playable characters; begin as Jack Bauer and jump to new characters of the show as the plot unveils.
  • The authentic 24 experience, featuring past and present 24 cast members, plus the show’s signature double bluffs, multiple plot strands, and cliffhangers.
  • Like the show, the game present's the story in multi-panel windows to explain events that are happening with different characters, simultaneously.

3. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat

Best for a campaign-and-multiplayer mix. The PS2 release should not be confused with the PC game Battlefield 2: Vandal distinguishes the console game and notes that it includes a solo campaign as well as multiplayer. Vandal displays a user score of 8.71, with no year stated on the accessed page. That rating is not a critic aggregate; the game’s place here rests on its unusual combination of campaign and multiplayer in a console FPS.

4. Black

Best for spectacle. Black is remembered in this field for destructive environments, which Vandal identifies as one of its eye-catching features. GameSpot lists the PS2 release on February 28, 2006, with Criterion Games as developer and Electronic Arts as publisher. Vandal displays a user score of 8.38, but gives no year on the accessed page; it is a user rating, not a critic score. The game’s emphasis on visual impact earns its position, while the available evidence does not support a broader claim about its technical performance.

Rank #2
Call of Duty 3 (PS2)
  • Call of Duty 3 brings the battle to life with advanced graphics, a new physics engine, a procedural environment and detailed ensemble animations.
  • All-new close-quarters battle mechanics allow players to fight hand-to-hand, improvise explosive devices, disarm traps and face a host of other battlefield situations.
  • Next-generation level design provides branching mission paths, letting you decide how to confront enemies -
  • flank an opponent, hit him head-on, or choose special tactics like sniping and demolition.
  • Environmental physics allow players to destroy enemy hideouts, forcing foes out in the open -- just remember, your enemies can do the same to you.

5. Killzone

Best-supported period critical reception. Killzone has particularly favorable contemporary review evidence on Metacritic’s PS2 critic-review page. Next Level Gaming awarded it 91 and wrote, “OK, let me put it plain and simple to you. Killzone is the best Playstation 2 FPS to date.” Official PlayStation 2 Magazine UK gave it 90 and called it a visually amazing FPS. The displayed excerpts do not identify individual reviewers, so these judgments belong to the outlets. The scores make Killzone a strong contender, not an objective proof that it outranks every other PS2 shooter.

6. Half-Life

Best for a substantial solo experience. WatchMojo includes Half-Life in its PS2 FPS selection and describes the PS2 version as having improvements over the original. That is WatchMojo’s comparative assessment, not an independently verified technical finding. Its inclusion makes sense for players looking for a campaign-led shooter, but the available sources provide less platform-specific review detail for it than for Killzone or Area 51.

7. Red Faction

Best for environmental destruction as a hook. Red Faction appears in WatchMojo’s selection, and Vandal also calls out destructible environments as a notable feature. That design identity gives it a clear reason to remain in the ranking rather than being treated as a generic shooter. The source material supports the feature as a distinguishing element, but not a detailed comparison of how it performs against other PS2 games.

8. Medal of Honor: Frontline

Best for a war-shooter alternative. WatchMojo includes Frontline, and Vandal places it among PS2 FPS games while identifying its PS2 release as 2002. It broadens the list beyond sci-fi settings and arcade-focused multiplayer, making it a useful pick for players seeking a different kind of shooter. The available material does not establish a platform-specific review score to compare directly with the scored entries above.

9. Area 51

Best for variety of modes. Area 51’s PS2 review record includes a 92 from Game Chronicles and an 85 from IGN on Metacritic. Game Chronicles praised its “immense array of story, online, arcade, and mapmaking modes,” calling it “a real treat.” The excerpt does not name an individual reviewer. The scores show favorable but differing outlet judgments, while the cited praise makes its range of modes the strongest documented reason to include it.

10. The Operative: No One Lives Forever

Best for stealth-and-gadget variety. WatchMojo’s description highlights stealth and gadgets alongside shooting, a useful contrast with entries built primarily around direct action. That blend gives No One Lives Forever a distinct place in the list. The inspected material does not supply a platform-specific review history or score for this entry, so its ranking reflects its differentiated design rather than a numerical comparison.

Close call: XIII

XIII is another worthwhile PS2 FPS candidate, especially for players drawn to visual identity. WatchMojo describes its cel-shaded presentation as comic-book-like. It narrowly misses the top ten here because the available evidence establishes its distinctive look but offers less comparative support across campaign, multiplayer, or period reviews than for the ranked entries.
