If you enjoy layered grand strategy, tactical warfare and campaigns that reward learning a complicated system, yes. If you want an easy-to-read interface, a gentle introduction or a reliable nonviolent route to victory, its demands may outweigh its strengths. TechRadar’s reviewer found a rich, replayable strategy game held back by confusing menus, an underexplained tutorial and diplomacy that cannot consistently replace war.
What kind of strategy game is Awakening?
Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening is a Sengoku-era grand-strategy game about leading a Japanese clan and trying to unify the country. Its campaign is not just a sequence of battles: you develop territory, manage officers, make policy, negotiate with rivals and decide where to expand. Koei Tecmo’s product listing covers the original editions, while the PlayStation Store describes the goal of unifying Warring States Japan and highlights officer and scenario editing.
The game’s Dominion system lets you grant territory to retainers, who then help develop the clan’s lands. Retainers can act on their own judgment, so delegation is part of the strategy: you can let trusted officers handle responsibilities while concentrating on broader decisions. That does not remove the need to understand the many connected systems, but it gives the campaign more texture than simply issuing orders before each battle.
There is substantial roster and scenario content. Nintendo’s 2025 US listing for the Switch 2 Complete Edition says it includes more than 2,200 officers and six new scenarios. That figure is Nintendo’s stated roster size, not an independent count. The listing also describes submission, direct talks, council officials, sieges, castle roles and province plans among the game’s systems and content.

How does the strategy and combat hold up?
TechRadar’s reviewer found the blend of clan management and detailed military operations compelling. Policies, officer traits, territorial development and battlefield decisions give campaigns room to unfold in different ways; varied clans, time periods and scenarios contribute to replayability. Players who enjoy thinking about both the shape of a campaign and the details of an operation have a lot to work with.
War, however, is difficult to avoid. The reviewer found diplomacy useful but too limited to be a consistently rewarding alternative to fighting, and said a full campaign is difficult to play without combat. Choose Awakening for its mix of political management and war, not because you expect negotiation to provide a dependable pacifist victory route. The review points readers seeking a more flexible strategy experience toward Civilization 7, but does not offer a direct comparison between the games.

Is Awakening hard to learn?
Yes, particularly if you are new to dense grand strategy. TechRadar’s reviewer said the tutorial introduces fundamentals but leaves much of the game to learn. Policies, officer abilities, development, diplomacy and military operations interact, and the interface does not always make those relationships easy to follow. The reviewer recommends starting at an easier difficulty rather than expecting the game to teach every system as you go.
The interface is a significant part of the trade-off. The reviewer found controller navigation confusing and the battlefield difficult to parse, including because it could not be zoomed. In the Switch 2 Complete Edition, the reviewer found mouse mode made navigation and directing troops smoother. That is one reviewer’s platform-specific experience, not a guarantee for every player or a fix for the broader clarity issues.

What did the review test?
TechRadar’s reviewer reported more than 30 hours with the Switch 2 Complete Edition across multiple campaigns, scenarios and difficulty settings, trying docked, handheld and mouse modes. The positive verdict is grounded in that reviewer’s play experience; it should not be read as independent testing of every platform or edition.

Who should play Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening?
- Good fit: players who like complex clan management, long campaigns, tactical warfare and learning interconnected systems.
- Think twice: newcomers who want clear, step-by-step onboarding or players who are easily frustrated by dense menus and a hard-to-read battlefield.
- Not the right pick for a pacifist campaign: diplomacy matters, but the reviewer found it too limited to make avoiding combat a consistently satisfying plan.
- On Switch 2: mouse mode may suit players who find controller navigation awkward, though the reported improvement comes from one reviewer and does not remove the game’s learning curve.
