The Best PS5 Alternatives to Guns of Eschaton While You Wait for December 2026

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Remnant II is the closest PS5 substitute for Guns of Eschaton’s deliberate, gun-led Soulslike combat. Choose Hunt: Showdown 1896 if first-person tension and a hostile Western atmosphere matter more than traditional Soulslike progression, or Evil West if you mainly want a supernatural Western you can play immediately. None reproduces all of Guns of Eschaton’s announced features: it is planned as a first-person Soulslike shooter with scarce ammunition, enemy weaknesses, parries or dashes, occult abilities and an apocalyptic American-West setting.

Guns of Eschaton is scheduled for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on December 8, 2026. It remains unreleased, so its advertised systems and the exact scope of its reported cooperative play could change before launch.

What Guns of Eschaton is promising on PS5

Guns of Eschaton is not a conventional Western shooter or a standard third-person action game. Its publisher describes it as an original Soulslike FPS set in an apocalyptic Western, while the PlayStation Store calls it a first-person Soulslike shooter in an apocalyptic Western. That combination makes the target unusually specific: the camera stays behind the player’s eyes, but success depends on the timing, restraint and observation associated with Soulslike combat.

The announced design points to deliberate gunfights rather than an ammunition-rich shooting gallery. You are expected to study enemies, identify weaknesses, manage limited ammunition and use defensive timing such as parries or dashes. Character builds and occult abilities add another layer, and the Steam listing also advertises bullet time, choices and multiple endings. The PlayStation Store says every gun has its own character, suggesting that weapons are intended to feel like distinct tools rather than interchangeable damage statistics.

Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor

The setting draws on Old West legends and archetypes but filters them through an occult, apocalyptic premise. That is why no currently available PS5 game is a perfect replacement. The alternatives below match different parts of the formula instead of pretending that a conventional Western, a first-person shooter and a Soulslike are the same experience.

Quick comparison: which alternative fits your priority?

Game Camera and combat Setting match Solo or co-op PS5 timing
Guns of Eschaton First-person Soulslike shooting; deliberate gunfights, scarce ammunition, enemy weaknesses, parries or dashes, builds and occult abilities Occult, apocalyptic American West Solo or cooperative play has been reported; final scope is not confirmed Scheduled for December 8, 2026
Remnant II Third-person Soulslike gunplay with precise dodging, boss patterns and build-driven weapons Dark fantasy and science-fiction worlds rather than a Western Solo or cooperative play Playable on PS5 now
Hunt: Showdown 1896 First-person, high-stakes extraction shooting; positioning, sound and scarce opportunities matter more than conventional run-and-gun play Strongest shared Western and occult-horror mood Solo or team-based play Playable on PS5 now
Evil West Third-person supernatural action with ranged weapons and close-combat combos; less Soulslike in structure Most direct playable supernatural-Western setting Solo campaign with cooperative support Playable on PS5 now

Remnant II is the best combat replacement

Why it matches

Remnant II is the safest recommendation when the important words in the premise are Soulslike shooter. Its third-person camera is the major difference, but its combat asks you to combine firearms with careful evasion, learn enemy and boss patterns, and build a character around complementary weapons and abilities. That creates the same kind of deliberate decision-making that Guns of Eschaton is advertising: firing is only one part of survival, and choosing when to attack or reposition matters.

The game also works for players who do not want to wait for a 2026 release. You can approach its campaigns alone or bring other players into cooperative sessions, making it the most practical substitute for the reported solo-or-co-op structure of Guns of Eschaton. Cooperative play changes the pressure rather than removing it; enemies and encounters still demand awareness, and a team that spends ammunition carelessly can create problems for everyone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where it differs

Remnant II does not provide the target’s first-person viewpoint or its Old West mythology. Its worlds are dark, fantastical and science-fictional, so the atmosphere is broader and stranger than a mythic frontier. If your reason for waiting is specifically to explore occult gunslingers, frontier legends and an apocalyptic Western, Remnant II will satisfy the combat itch but not the setting itch.

  • Choose it for flexible solo or cooperative play without requiring a first-person camera.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is the best first-person and Western substitute

Why it matches

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is the closest available choice on two of the target’s most distinctive axes: first-person shooting and a grim, supernatural Western atmosphere. Its matches revolve around entering dangerous territory, tracking a target, reading other players’ movement and deciding whether to extract with your rewards or risk a further fight. That structure makes every shot and sound significant. You cannot treat ammunition, exposure or positioning as disposable resources.

The result is a tense form of first-person gunplay that rewards patience and observation. It is a strong rehearsal for the mindset implied by Guns of Eschaton: study threats, exploit openings and avoid fighting on the enemy’s terms. Its dark frontier imagery and monsters also make it a better mood match than a generic military shooter.

Where it differs

Hunt is an extraction shooter rather than a conventional Soulslike campaign. Its central loop is built around repeated multiplayer expeditions, competing hunters and the possibility of losing a run, not a linear story with individually authored bosses, permanent character builds and multiple narrative endings. It also does not reproduce the announced parries, dashes, bullet-time system or occult weapon progression of Guns of Eschaton.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters for solo players. Hunt can be approached alone, but its encounters are designed around uncertainty and human opponents; a quiet run can become a three-way fight without warning. Team play is available, yet coordination, voice communication and role discipline matter more than simply adding damage.

Who should choose it

  • Choose Hunt when first-person perspective is non-negotiable.
  • Choose it when a haunted frontier atmosphere matters more than a traditional Soulslike campaign.
  • Choose it if you enjoy high-risk decisions, player-versus-player tension and replayable matches.

Evil West is the best Western-mood alternative

Why it matches

Evil West offers the most immediate answer to the question, “What can I play now if I mainly want an occult Western?” It uses a third-person camera and a more conventional action structure, but its supernatural frontier setting, firearms and close-range combat make the theme recognizable. You move through a story-driven campaign, fight monsters and combine ranged attacks with melee techniques rather than managing an extraction run.

Its cooperative support gives it a useful place in this comparison. Two players can tackle the campaign together, so it can serve readers who want a shared Western adventure while waiting for Guns of Eschaton’s final multiplayer details.

Where it differs

Evil West is not built around the same punishment-and-recovery loop as a Soulslike. Encounters emphasize action-game momentum, weapon abilities and combo execution instead of the target’s advertised scarce ammunition, enemy-weakness study and defensive timing. It is also third-person, so it cannot provide the intimate first-person weapon perspective promised by Guns of Eschaton.

Think of Evil West as a setting replacement, not a mechanical one. It is the right recommendation when your priority is supernatural gunslinging in a recognizable Western world and you would rather play a directed campaign than a systems-heavy challenge.

How the alternatives map to Guns of Eschaton’s announced systems

First-person gunplay

Hunt is the direct match for viewpoint and weapon handling. Its first-person presentation makes distance, cover, sound and line of sight central to every encounter. Guns of Eschaton’s first-person design may feel more intimate and character-focused because it is also tying shooting to builds, occult abilities and Soulslike timing. Remnant II and Evil West can teach positioning and attack discipline, but both use third-person cameras.

Soulslike precision and punishment

Remnant II is the strongest match. Its combat rewards learning patterns and treating a failed attempt as information. Hunt offers pressure and consequence, but its danger comes from extraction stakes and unpredictable opponents rather than a Soulslike boss structure. Evil West is more forgiving and action-oriented, so it is a weaker choice if timing and repeated mastery are the reason you are interested in the upcoming game.

Occult-Western atmosphere

Evil West is the clearest thematic substitute, with Hunt close behind for players who prefer horror and historical grit. Guns of Eschaton is aiming for an apocalyptic mythology built from Old West legends, so neither alternative should be treated as an exact world match. Remnant II supplies dark fantasy atmosphere but not a frontier setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solo and cooperative play

Remnant II is the most natural choice for a cooperative Soulslike shooter. Hunt supports team-based expeditions as well as solo approaches, but its competitive structure changes the social experience. Evil West provides a cooperative story campaign. Guns of Eschaton’s solo-or-cooperative description comes from reporting about the project, and the final player count, matchmaking rules and campaign scope should be checked when the launch version is available.

Choose by the experience you want now

If you want the closest mechanical practice

Start with Remnant II. Treat its third-person camera as the compromise for getting Soulslike gunplay, build choices and cooperative support before December 2026.

If you want first-person shooting under pressure

Start with Hunt: Showdown 1896. Its extraction structure is different, but it trains patience, target reading and resource awareness in a first-person Western-horror environment.

If you want the frontier fantasy immediately

Start with Evil West. It delivers the most direct supernatural-Western presentation and a straightforward campaign, while asking less of you than a Soulslike.

If you want all three traits at once

No available recommendation covers first-person Soulslike combat, occult-apocalyptic Western storytelling and the announced Guns of Eschaton feature set simultaneously. The practical approach is to pair games: use Remnant II for combat discipline and Evil West or Hunt for the setting and viewpoint you value most.

What to watch before buying Guns of Eschaton

The December 8, 2026 date is a scheduled global launch for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the official PlayStation Store lists the PS5 edition for that date. Because the game is unreleased, announcements should be read as a design target rather than a guarantee of the final build.

  • Confirm whether cooperative play is available throughout the campaign, limited to selected modes or changed before launch.
  • Check how ammunition scarcity works in practice: a Soulslike shooter can feel very different depending on whether shortages are constant, situational or tied to specific weapons.
  • Look for clarification on parries, dashes and bullet time. These systems determine whether combat is primarily defensive, evasive or resource-driven.
  • Verify how choices and multiple endings are implemented. Their presence can mean branching missions, ending variations or a smaller set of final outcomes.
  • Check the final PS5 performance and accessibility information after release rather than assuming that an announced feature list describes every console setting.

Wait or play now?

Play Remnant II now if the core appeal is a demanding shooter with Soulslike decision-making and cooperative options. Play Hunt: Showdown 1896 now if first-person perspective and a dangerous supernatural frontier matter most. Play Evil West now if the Western setting is the non-negotiable part and you prefer a directed action campaign.

Wait for Guns of Eschaton if you specifically want the combination those games separate: first-person weapons with individual character, deliberate Soulslike timing, scarce ammunition, occult abilities and an apocalyptic American-West setting. Its scheduled PS5 launch is December 8, 2026, but the cooperative details and final implementation of its advertised systems remain to be confirmed in the released game.
