If you are asking what to play after Professor Layton, start with Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective for the closest warm, character-led mystery, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles for courtroom deductions, or Return of the Obra Dinn for demanding, serious logic. Those games preserve Layton’s pleasure of noticing details and solving a case, but they differ in one crucial way: Layton delivers many small, varied puzzles, while most alternatives build toward one sustained investigation.
This guide covers the best puzzle-adventure games on Switch and PC, explains their puzzle and story structures, and identifies the right choice for your preferred tone, difficulty, length, and tolerance for ambiguity.

What makes a good follow-up to Professor Layton?
Professor Layton combines a light animated adventure with a large collection of self-contained brainteasers. You can enjoy a short logic problem, return to the story, then switch to a word puzzle, spatial challenge, arithmetic question, or lateral-thinking riddle. The ideal follow-up therefore depends on which part of that formula you want to preserve.
- Many small puzzles: Choose a game with a broad mix of bite-sized challenges rather than one central deduction system.
- A continuous mystery: Choose a title in which clues accumulate toward a single explanation.
- Character-led presentation: Look for animated scenes, expressive casts, and a welcoming tone.
- Strict deduction: Look for games that ask you to identify people, causes, motives, and timelines from evidence.
- Handheld convenience: Switch versions are useful for short sessions, while PC editions often provide the widest storefront choice.
The shortlist below separates those qualities instead of treating every detective game as interchangeable.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective | Hand-authored scene puzzles involving objects and timing | Animated, chapter-based mystery | Warm, comic, broadly accessible | Moderate; solutions are authored rather than open-ended | 12–15 hours (editorial estimate) | Switch and PC editions are represented in the cited coverage |
| The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles | Investigation, evidence presentation, and courtroom cross-examination | Text-heavy visual-novel adventure | Comedic period drama; generally accessible, but dialogue-heavy | Moderate; progress follows the case’s intended logic | Two games; part of a wider 60-plus-hour Ace Attorney trilogy estimate | Switch and PC editions are covered by the comparison guide |
| Return of the Obra Dinn | Scene reconstruction and identity, cause, and killer deduction | Open investigation using frozen death scenes | Dark and mature | High; ambiguity is intentional, with no timer or fail state | 10–12 hours (editorial estimate) | Switch and PC |
| The Case of the Golden Idol | Chained deduction from objects, positions, and context | Static scene investigation | Much darker than Layton | High; inference and careful reading matter more than trial-and-error | About 15 hours for the two-game experience (editorial estimate) | PC storefront coverage is established; Switch availability is not stated here |
| Storyteller | Arrange characters and scenes to satisfy a written title | Short comic-strip scenarios | Light, simple, and accessible | Low to moderate; experimentation is encouraged | About 6 hours (editorial estimate) | PC storefront coverage is established; Switch availability is not stated here |

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective — the closest all-round follow-up
Choose Ghost Trick first if you want a friendly cast, a tightly paced mystery, and puzzles that feel authored rather than procedurally generated. You play a ghost who can rewind time and manipulate objects in the moments before a character’s death. Each scene asks you to move through an environment, possess objects, and alter events until the outcome changes.
Why it works for Layton fans
The game shares Layton’s combination of charm and careful observation. Its puzzles are embedded directly in animated scenes, so solving one advances the plot instead of sending you to a detached puzzle menu. The characters and visual comedy keep the atmosphere approachable even when the mystery becomes more intricate.

There are fewer standalone puzzles than in a Layton collection. Ghost Trick is a continuous 12–15-hour mystery, not a long sequence of unrelated riddles. If your favorite Layton routine is solving several quick puzzles in one sitting, this may feel more story-driven; if you prefer seeing every solution affect the next chapter, it is an excellent fit.
Who should skip it
Readers seeking hard, open-ended deduction may find the authored solutions too guided. The game expects you to discover the intended chain of object interactions rather than construct competing theories.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles — for courtroom logic and Sherlock-style deductions
Choose The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles when the investigation and argument side of Layton appeals more than its mini-game variety. The collection contains two games and follows investigations that lead into courtroom cross-examinations. You inspect evidence, question witnesses, identify contradictions, and present the correct item at the right moment.
The Layton connection
The series has direct crossover heritage with Layton, and its Sherlock-style deductions make that relationship easy to understand. Cases reward close attention to testimony and the ability to connect apparently separate clues.

The trade-off: much more reading
Chapters are slower and substantially more text-heavy than Layton. Long conversations, evidence review, and courtroom sequences replace Layton’s frequent changes of puzzle type. Set aside uninterrupted time if you prefer to follow a case’s full argument rather than dip in for five minutes.

How long it lasts
The two-game collection is substantial. For context, the comparison coverage estimates more than 60 hours for the three-game Ace Attorney Trilogy; the Chronicles collection is not the same package, so treat that figure as a series benchmark rather than a guarantee for this release.
Return of the Obra Dinn — the serious deduction choice
Choose Return of the Obra Dinn if you want to solve a case by reconstructing facts, not by selecting from a stream of conventional puzzles. The ship Obra Dinn returns with its crew dead or missing, and you use death scenes to determine the fates of 60 people. For each person, the game asks you to work out identity, cause of death, and, where relevant, who killed them.
How its deduction works
You move through frozen moments surrounding each death, inspect positions and conversations, and compare details across scenes. Names, relationships, uniforms, accents, and locations become useful only when combined. The game expects note-taking and revisiting earlier evidence.
Difficulty, ambiguity, and failure
Obra Dinn is darker and more demanding than Layton. It has no timer and no traditional fail state, so you can test ideas without losing progress. The challenge comes from ambiguity: a scene may show what happened without immediately telling you who everyone is.
Length and platform
The comparison guide estimates 10–12 hours. Nintendo lists it for Switch, and the desktop comparison covers PC play, making it a strong option for either a handheld or desk-based investigation.
The Case of the Golden Idol — a chain of puzzle-box deductions
Choose The Case of the Golden Idol for interconnected scenes in which every object, pose, and phrase can become evidence. Each scenario asks you to infer identities, actions, and motives. Solving one scene supplies context for later scenes, so the experience feels like opening a series of linked puzzle boxes.
Why it feels unlike Layton
Golden Idol is much darker and less reassuring. It does not rely on a friendly professor guiding you through a colorful world; it asks you to stare at disturbing events and build an explanation from sparse clues. The satisfaction comes from recognizing a chain of cause and effect rather than from mastering many unrelated puzzle formats.

Careful reading and tolerance for uncertainty are essential. The cited comparison estimates roughly 15 hours for the two-game experience and notes a demo. The available platform evidence in that coverage is for PC storefronts; check your regional listings before assuming a Switch edition.

Storyteller — the short, accessible option
Choose Storyteller when you want a compact puzzle session with almost no setup. Each level presents a title and a set of characters, locations, and scenes. You place them into a comic-strip arrangement until the resulting story satisfies the title.
What you are solving
The challenge is causal rather than numerical. A character may need to fall in love, become jealous, die, or be exposed, and the order of panels determines whether the requested outcome occurs. Because levels are small, you can experiment freely and reset quickly.
Who it suits
Storyteller is a good bridge for younger players or anyone who likes Layton’s low-pressure presentation but does not want a long campaign. The comparison guide estimates about six hours, making it the shortest main recommendation here.
Paradise Killer — the wildcard for player-directed investigation
Choose Paradise Killer if you want freedom to decide which evidence matters and when a case is ready for trial. You investigate an island, gather clues in any order, and eventually choose how to present the case. Multiple verdicts are supported, so the ending reflects the strength and interpretation of your evidence.
Why the freedom matters
Most mystery adventures lead you through a fixed sequence of discoveries. Paradise Killer lets you set your own route and decide when you have enough information. That makes it rewarding for players who enjoyed Layton’s “spot the detail” moments but now want to form and defend an independent theory.
Important tone warning
The vaporwave setting is stylish, but the subject matter is mature murder investigation. It is far from Layton’s gentle tone and should not be treated as an all-ages substitute. The cited comparison covers PC storefronts; verify console and regional availability separately.

Tangle Tower
Tangle Tower offers a self-contained mystery with interrogation, exploration, and environmental puzzles. It broadens the puzzle-adventure field without requiring the courtroom structure of Ace Attorney.
Detective Pikachu Returns
This is the most overtly family-oriented option in the roundup. It emphasizes character interaction and approachable investigation, making it suitable when you want a lighter tone rather than a demanding deduction system.
Another Code: Recollection
Another Code: Recollection presents a story-led mystery with exploration and puzzle solving. Its appeal is atmosphere and narrative discovery; puzzle density and challenge differ from Layton’s rapid-fire format.
Duck Detective – The Secret Salami
This compact detective adventure uses a comic premise and accessible clue work. It suits short sessions and players who value humor over complex, multi-layered deduction.
Famicom Detective Club entries
Famicom Detective Club provides a more traditional visual-novel investigation. Expect reading, questioning, and story progression rather than a constant stream of independent brainteasers.
Nintendo’s roundup also lists Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy – Deluxe Edition. If your priority is simply more Layton, this is the direct franchise continuation rather than a substitute with a different design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy the direct Layton continuation?
Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy – Deluxe Edition is the clearest answer to “what comes after Professor Layton?” because it preserves the franchise’s central format: an animated investigation, recurring characters, and a large menu of puzzles. Choose it when consistency matters more than discovering a new mystery system.

Pick by the kind of Layton experience you miss
You want the closest overall mood
Start with Ghost Trick. It is warm, character-focused, puzzle-led, and tightly paced, while still offering a genuinely different mechanic.
You want more arguments and deductions
Choose The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. It replaces Layton’s varied mini-puzzles with evidence, testimony, and courtroom logic, and it asks you to read considerably more.
You want the hardest reasoning
Choose Return of the Obra Dinn if you can accept a darker setting and ambiguous clues. Choose The Case of the Golden Idol for a similarly demanding but more scene-by-scene chain of deductions.
You have short sessions
Choose Storyteller for its approximately six-hour campaign and fast resets. Duck Detective – The Secret Salami is another compact Switch possibility from Nintendo’s roundup.
You want to investigate in your own order
Choose Paradise Killer. Its evidence collection and player-chosen trial offer freedom that the more guided Layton-style adventures do not.
You want more Layton, not a substitute
Choose Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy – Deluxe Edition on Switch. It is the direct continuation and the safest choice for preserving the series’ puzzle volume and presentation.

Which game is most like Professor Layton?
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is the closest broad recommendation because it combines a warm cast, animated mystery scenes, and hand-authored puzzles. It has fewer standalone puzzles, so Layton’s Mystery Journey is the closer structural match.
Which recommendation is best for children?
Storyteller and Detective Pikachu Returns have the most approachable presentation among the listed choices. Return of the Obra Dinn, The Case of the Golden Idol, and Paradise Killer use darker subject matter and are not all-ages substitutes.
Which game has no timer or fail state?
Return of the Obra Dinn has no timer or traditional fail state. Its difficulty comes from interpreting incomplete evidence, not from losing a timed challenge.
Do these games have as many puzzles as Layton?
Usually not. Layton’s defining feature is a high volume of varied, independent puzzles. Ghost Trick, Ace Attorney, Obra Dinn, Golden Idol, and Paradise Killer concentrate on one connected investigation; Storyteller offers many small levels but a simpler set of rules.
