There is no single best race and origin in Oblivion Remastered: choose for the role you want to play. High Elf is a strong mage, Wood Elf suits ranged stealth, and Khajiit fits sneaky melee. For close combat, Nord and Orc are both compelling but emphasize different strengths; Breton is a flexible first-character choice.
How races and origins work in Oblivion Remastered
The game offers ten races, each with two origins. Origins add attribute differences; they are the Remaster’s reworked take on the original game’s gender-based stat differences. Your selected body type no longer carries that original stat split. PC Gamer lists the available combinations below in its race and origin guide.
| Race | Origins |
|---|---|
| Argonian | Arnesia or Thornmarsh |
| Breton | Systres or High Rock |
| Dark Elf | Vvardenfell or Mainland |
| High Elf | Auridon or Summerset |
| Imperial | Nibenay or Colovia |
| Khajiit | Anequina or Pellitine |
| Nord | Western or Eastern |
| Orc | Stronghold or Orsinium |
| Redguard | Dragontail Mountains or Alik’r Desert |
| Wood Elf | Grahtwood or Reaper’s Marsh |
Bethesda says the Remaster redesigned leveling with inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim in its April 22, 2025 overview. Older build advice can still help explain race and skill strengths, but it should not be treated as proof that every original-game optimization transfers unchanged.
Best race and origin by playstyle
Best for a mage: High Elf
PC Gamer’s mage recommendation is High Elf, which its guide describes as having a +15 Destruction skill bonus, increased maximum magicka, bonuses to other magic skills, and illness resistance. The tradeoff is vulnerability to fire, frost, and shock. Choose Auridon for its speed emphasis or Summerset for endurance; PCGamesN also recommends High Elf/Summerset Isle for magic in its role-based race guide.

Best for straightforward melee: Nord/Western
PC Gamer recommends Nord/Western for a durable weapon-focused character, citing blade and blunt competence, heavy armor, and Western’s endurance bonus. This is the more direct pick if you want to lean into conventional melee without making a limited-use ability the centerpiece of your build.
Best for melee resistance and burst power: Orc/Stronghold
PCGamesN’s melee pick is Orc/Stronghold. Its recommendation emphasizes strength, endurance, magic resistance, and Berserker Rage, a powerful ability usable once per day. The choice is less about universal superiority than priorities: take Orc for resistance and a dramatic daily power, or Nord for a straightforward durable weapon user. PCGamesN also lists Redguard/Dragontail Mountains and Nord/Western as melee alternatives.

Best flexible first character: Breton/Systres
If you have not settled on a role, PC Gamer recommends Breton/Systres. Its magic-leaning attributes and skills, plus magic resistance, give it a useful foundation without making melee or stealth feel as out of reach as they may with a more specialized choice. It is a sensible starting point for experimenting rather than optimizing around one combat style.
Best for stealth melee and thievery: Khajiit
Khajiit is well suited to sneaking and close-range theft or combat: PC Gamer highlights strengths in Sneak, Acrobatics, Athletics, Security, Blade, Hand-to-Hand, and Light Armor, as well as night vision. The origin depends on the kind of stealth character you want. Choose Pellitine for more Strength and melee damage; choose Anequina if you prefer its Endurance tradeoff and a more survivable approach. PCGamesN favors Anequina for stealth.

Best for ranged stealth: Wood Elf/Reaper’s Marsh
Wood Elf is the clearest ranged stealth recommendation across the guides. PC Gamer describes a +15 Marksman bonus alongside related stealth and light-armor bonuses; PCGamesN also picks Wood Elf/Reaper’s March for ranged builds. PC Gamer favors Reaper’s Marsh for Endurance and health. Grahtwood instead offers Personality, which can help with persuasion and trading.
Generalist alternative: Dark Elf/Vvardenfell
PCGamesN names Dark Elf/Vvardenfell its all-rounder. That is a useful alternative if you want a broad recommendation outside Breton/Systres, but the guide detail available here does not establish enough individual trait information to make a precise side-by-side comparison with Breton.

How to make the choice if you are undecided
Use the origin to refine a race choice, not to talk yourself into a playstyle you do not enjoy. Start with your intended combat role, then weigh the relevant skill and attribute bonuses against defensive or resource tradeoffs. For example, High Elf’s magic strengths come with elemental vulnerabilities; the Khajiit origin choice turns on offense versus survivability; and the two melee recommendations favor different strengths.
If no role clearly appeals, favor flexibility and enjoyment over small starting bonuses. Bethesda’s April 22, 2025 beginner guide quotes Senior Environment Artist Megan Sawyer: “You’ll pick a different class or a different birthsign, but more importantly, you’re going to pick a different path.” Read the official beginner guide for its broader introduction to starting the game.
